gaines adams really did kind of [expletive] us by dying.

You know, I liked the trade at the time but even if he didn't die, it was a horrible trade.

Not really...the Bears really fucked us by cutting Alex Brown and deciding that anderson was going to succeed with Peppers on the other side. All those moves were done after Gaines died. I'm not saying that didn't suck, although I have no idea how much he could have actually helped. But it came down to the Bears thinking that with Peppers drawing double teams on the other side, Anderson would be able to succeed at a cheaper price, and decided they didn't need Alex Brown in that situation. Nevermind the fact that the Bears could have easily had both with no cap. It was just them being frugal after spending a crapload on Peppers and it's biting them in the ass.

I know, I know. I was enamored with his potential.

Can we please stop overrating Alex Brown?

Whos overrating him? Hes better than Mark Anderson/Charles Grant/Other crap on our roster at DE. Brown paired with Peppers would be a definite upgrade over any of those other guys.

Yeah, but it was hardly a huge mistake to get rid of him. Mark Anderson sucking and getting cut doesn't mean the Bears should have paid Alex Brown what he was getting paid for another season.

This coaching staff's infatuation with Mark Anderson has been a bad thing ever since he had that big rookie year. They have lived off that rookie year with him for the last 3 years while hes done nothing since. Brown was going to get what something like 5 million? Brown has been productive and never had a guy on the line like Peppers. There really is no reason to think Brown wouldn't have been worth the 5mil in this defense.

In a salary cap year, sure. But unless you can replace him, which they couldn't, then it absolutely does mean you keep him.

Want to know why the Bears offensive line sucks almost every year and has really only managed a couple seasons of decent play?

“The key to good offensive line play is based on cohesion and a great offensive line coach, which we have with Mike Tice. The same five players playing together has been the formula for success. The importance of the same five players playing together stems from all the learning and adjustments that go on throughout the week and on game day. If one player makes a mistake, they all suffer—including the quarterback. I’m not minimizing talent, but if the players aren’t on the same page, talent is irrelevant. There have been a lot of very good offensive lines in the NFL historically that weren’t composed of household names.”

It's becasue the GM is delusional. Cohesion is worthless without talent. You aren't going to get a line playing well just through coaching and playing together every week. It's that myth that has kept Olin Kreutz the most important part of this line despite playing the least important position on the line. You can probably make an average line pretty darn good under the right circumstances, but you aren't going to make a crappy line great just by hiring a new coach. And in the age of free agency and salary caps you can't just rely on cohesion to make you good. Guys are going to leave and fresh bodies have to be resupplied constantly. The goal should not be to have the same starting 5 week after week, the goal should be to have the best 5 lineman you can find.

Cutler is practicing today. So is Collins

Williams on the side with trainer, all other OL are practicing

Naturally, Major Wright is out

Fantastic news regarding Cutler.

Williams needs to get back already and it would be awfully nice to see Major Wright get some snaps.

Sometimes I feel like people forget that Major Wright was a third round pick. He was never going to be a major impact player. Him missing time probably doesn't matter for this year.

Wasn't he in the starters spot before the wrist injury in the preseason? I just want to see him get healthy so the coaching staff knows what they have, the safety play again has yet to impress. Even the hard hits that usually came from Chris Harris have become more infrequent. Can't hurt to see the young guy getting more snaps and possibly put a playmaker back there, a role that DJ Moore is helping the defense out with right now from the nickelback position.

The only times we have seen him play he had 7 first half tackles. Then he missed the rest of camp and actually played more snaps than Chris Harris in the opener vs. Detroit.

It was up to him whether he was going to be a true impact player, but every indication was that he was going to be given every chance to be.

That whole thing is agonizing but the bolded is particularly nauseating.

Brown wasn't worth the 5Mil last year, he wouldn't have been this year either. Peppers being there hasn't helped the rest of the DL, what makes you so sure it would have helped Alex?

And can you blame the Bears for living off of Anderson's rookie year? Clearly he showed potential. He was still young. He was still very cheap. And it's not like they just ignored the DE position because of Anderson's great rookie year. Hell, they've spent like 5 draft picks on the position since and traded for Gaines Adams.

Also, just because there wasn't a cap didn't mean there wasn't a spending limit. Granted, I would have rather not have spent multi-millions on a blocking TE (who sucks at blocking this year by the way) and kept Brown.

There's the problem. Should have kept Pace. Omiyale stays at LG. Garza at RG. Williams at RT. That line wasn't good, but it's because the same 5 only was together for 10-12 games!

Martz said he gave his players entirely too much to handle and consequently the Bears were squashed by the Giants, who set an NFL record with nine sacks in the first half. New York had 10 sacks total, the most ever against the Bears and tying for the most a Martz-directed offensive has ever surrendered.

"Let me just tell you guys this: I just feel terrible," Martz said. "The defense had a great effort in that game. I just tried to do way too much in a short week with these guys. They are not ready for that.

"We've got a bunch of young guys trying to learn how to play and we lost our poise, got on our heels and couldn't do much of anything right. That's an old coach's fault right there. You can pin that one right on me. Whatever went wrong in that game is my responsibility.

"The preparation for that game we felt good about, but it was just way too much for these guys to deal with, so just leave it at that if you would. These guys are going to be fine. I promise you they will be just fine. We'll make sure of that. We're going to make some adjustments. And each week you learn a little bit more about your players and about some of these things. Got a little bit too aggressive in terms of what we were doing and I know better than that. I am a better coach than that."

Was anyone listening to B and B on the Score today? My signal was going in and out, so I missed parts of it, but it sounded like the Bears were saying that Cutler sustained the concussion on the last sack near the end of the half. However, Zaidman was mentioning something about Cutler going to the wrong sideline earlier in the game? Which would mean he played part of the half with the concussion.

If anyone was listening and can give a quick synopsis, thatd be appreciated.

Cutler practicing is a great sign. All we have to do now is hope there are no delayed symptoms that would show up between now and Sunday. But since he's practicing, doesn't that mean he's already been cleared by doctors?

Edit: Nevermind, I just read the article on chicagobears.com

i'm starting to lean towards the giants game being more cutler's fault for holding the football too long before he sustained the concussion and then his swollen brain in the second quarter, and then the completely inept backup situation.

the line was what it was, bad, but not anything egregiously worse than they normally are.
