Don Banks raised them from 29 to 25.

The good news is that Matt Forte has his mojo back and Jay Cutler threw for 372 yards and a couple touchdowns in his first real game in Mike Martz's offense. But the bad news is Chicago needed that horrible Calvin Johnson call in the final half-minute to avoid getting beat by the Lions with their backup quarterback (Shaun Hill) playing the second half.

Meanwhile he rips the pathetic Jets but keeps them in the top 10. I think the Jets and Bears aren't that far away from one another (and I'm not sure which team is better).

The Jets remind me a lot of many Bears teams. That defense is going to have to lift them up, it's not going to be the offense. And it could -- provided they find ways to hide that one CB who is obviously in over his head.

They'll stop putting Wilson on an island. He's probably the best Boise State football player of all time and a 1st round pick, not exactly some scrub project that should be written off after one game.

I didn't notice this until just now, but apparently FO's DVOA projections really like the Bears this year, particularly the defense. Predictions were average on offense, #2 overall defense, and top-tier special teams. They were projected 8th overall, 4th in the NFC behind the Eagles, Packers and Falcons (just ahead of the Vikes).

After week 1, however, they're up to 6th, and 3rd in the NFC behind Green Bay and Atlanta (VOA indicates the Bears did actually dominate the game, but the offensive performance was pretty lousy).

EDIT: Individual performances:

- Cutler: 6th overall QB

- Forte: Least effective rusher, most effective RB receiver

- Taylor: Average rusher

- Olsen: Second to least effective TE

- Knox: Borderline top 20 receiver

- Aromashodu: Borderline bottom 20 receiver

Also, overall offense was 24th, dragged down mostly by the atrocious rushing. They were above average for passing.

That's weird. They really like our defense that much, huh?

I can see it. The defense was pretty awesome te more I think about it. 168 yards allowed. Both Lions TDs were off TOs. The first Lions TD was allowed to happen only because of a bad roughing the passer penalty on a 3rd down incompletion. We got decent pressure, forced 3 tos, had at least 3-4 three and out possessions, and generally limited any big plays. I know DVOA is more complicated that that but on the surface I definitely see why they'd like us so much.

Cutler on Hester's game vs. Lions:

If Devin would have got open, I would have thrown him the ball.

Context free, that sounds bad. But, probably realizing what he just said, he continued:

It's going to be game-by-game who gets the ball, depending on which coverage, if they are rolling strong, if they are rolling weak, we're going to go with the matchups. They were doing some things to Devin, putting some things over the top. Devin is going to have his games. I'm not worried about that. He played really well. He's going to play really well this week. I'm excited for him.

Hillenmeyer stopped being useful a couple years ago. Williams is better than he is now, without question.

That is your opinion, so by definition, it is questionable.

Okay, without question from reasonable people.

Well, apparently the Bears' coaching and front office disagree with you.

He did say REASONABLE people, though. That rules out the Bears' brain trust. :D

SB contenders don't start 0-2. And if Dallas starts 0-2, heads will roll. And we know in the NFL, the more desperate team usually finds a way to win (if the teams are even close to evenly matched).

Ah hem

Even better example! I just remember the Cowboys one from an Emmitt Smith book I read while in grade school.

Down to a 7.5 point spread already. That's 1.5 points of movement in the Bears direction in 2 weeks.

Maybe people have since looked beyond just the CJ catch and realized the Bears completely dominated the Lions.

Of the two exceptions mentioned, 3 of the 4 losses were to really good football teams, 2 of them went 13-3 and the other was a 12-4 super bowl participant. I think it has more to do with who you lose to. Yes, that Cowboys example lost to what turned out to be a crappy Redskins team that was 2 years removed from being great. On the other hand, if Dallas goes 0-2 this year it will be against a couple squads that have peaked at mediocrity the past 3 seasons and aren't anything special. Raw's rule holds up in that context. Dallas itself has been an inconsistent performer of late, and they have tougher tests going forward. They can't go 0-2 with the schedule they have left.

fwiw, PFF did a brief recap of last Sunday's game, and they ripped Williams pretty hard

When Chris Williams moved to left tackle last year upon the coaches finally deciding Orlando Pace had gone a season too far we feared the worst. He had a poor start on the right, and stepping over to the left looked like it might finish him. Fortunately for the Bears, he improved and we looked forward to watching him progress this year. However, he had an awful preseason, getting beaten constantly, and it looked as if our initial fears might be realized. This game solidified that view — he had a shocking day (-6.2). He gave up a sack, 2 hits and 4 hurries in protection as well as a holding penalty. In addition, his run blocking was worse, as Vanden Bosch regularly got inside him to make tackles for no gain or loss.

they raved about the play of Cutler and the LB corps though

It wasn't good, unfortunately. I think they'll need to help him against many of the DEs he will face. If someone has a better option I'd be all for it, and try to work Williams into another position on the line. But none of these other guys look like they could hold up in pass protection on an island, either.

Bottom line, I don't see the Bears has having the horse who can shine in that role for 2010. It's going to be a problem all year long, so we need to just give him help and live with it.

It's really frustrating that Ryan Clady went just a few picks ahead of Williams.
