Harold Reynolds, ladies and gentlemen.

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi will be in the same position with the Cubs next season, according to MLB analyst Harold Reynolds, who calls the job, "one of the top ones in baseball."

"I really think -- this is going to sound crazy -- I think Joe Girardi is going there," Reynolds said Wednesday during an appearance on Dan Patrick's radio show. "I really do. If he wins the World Series in New York...or even if he doesn't, every year it's the same old thing. He wanted that Cubs job before and then the Yankees came to the table when he didn't get the chance with the Cubs. I think he's going back, I really do."

I'm surprised he has time to comment. He must not have female co-workers to sexually harass at the MLB Network.

Just hope he does not get fired, I actually enjoy Harold Reynolds as an analyst.

As long as they keep him as far away from the MLB Draft as possible, they can do whatever they want with him. MLBN's coverage of the MLB Draft is even worse than ESPN's coverage of the third day of the NFL Draft.

Girardi

Fredi

Who I think it will be: One of these 3

Pat Listach

Mike Quade

Ryan Sandberg

My reasoning for this is that I believe Girardi will stick in NY, Fredi will go to the Braves, and Bobby V will just get passed up. I think Hendry is going to go with a guy who has spent time in this organization, and possibly just the exact opposite of an older veteran manager. Not saying I will be excited or agree with the 3 I have listed just a hunch.

Girardi could stay in NY and win probably a couple more WS titles and eventually be revered like Torre was. Or he could come to the Cubs, probably not win a WS title, lose all his hair, get booed constantly when the team is worse than .500 and likely destroy his reputation as a manager.

I don't know why he'd leave NY.

Just play the right position players most of the time and don't overwork the starting pitchers. These are my base requirements for a candidate. Proper batting order, bullpen management, and lack of bunting and running are all things to look for, but I know very few if any candidates will be all that good at those things.

Did anyone see the Comcast.net poll on this the other night after the game? It was Brenly coming in the overall big winner at about 46 percent then Sandberg at 27 and Girardi at 21, Quade had a few points.

Bullet to the head

so dramatic.

I'd rather Girardi hang out in NY for a few more years while we get our situation sorted out with a young-ish manager who can play percentages but still teach professional baseball effectively. I still go by the Bill James rule that a manager is at best +5 wins a year, so i'd rather just wait till we get a team where 5-10 games doesn't decide the season, then bring in Girardi to be the one that is at the helm when we win it all.

TT is right on here. The first two things mentioned are the primary concerns with any manager, IMO.

Don't discount the impact this event had on Hendry and the rest of the remaining front office personnel from back in the day. I remember thinking it was rather incredible that Girardi spoke instead of MacPhail or Baylor.

On-field concerns aside, Girardi would undoubtedly fit ownership's desire to have a publicly competent, well-spoken individual in the big chair.

Torre left with as many critics as those that revered him. Girardi is going to have to win more titles than Torre if he wants to be forever embraced by all. Girardi would be revered in Chicago with accomplishing a whole hell of a lot less.

In the summer of 2002, rumors quietly began circulating that Dusty Baker might be available. Jim Hendry patiently waited while the playoffs and World Series ran its course, then went out and got Baker. I can see a very similar scenario playing out with Joe Girardi.

In my opinion, it's Girardi's job if he wants it. Ryne Sandberg will get it if Girardi stays in New York. I'm not wasting a whole lot of time thinking about anyone else because really there is no one else--at least in Hendry's mind.

btw, good to see bob dernier become 1st base coach the other day. he's a friend of my brother and he has had always good things to say about dernier.

makes me more sad about Mark Prior than Darryl Kile

/insensitive comment

At least Cardinals fans don't still have to see Daryl Kile and be reminded of what happened

A Kile comeback would be about the only more unlikely comeback than one from Mark Prior.

I don't think that would ever happen. I think Sandberg will leave the Cubs if he doesn't get the job, especially if the new manager is young.

Is Girardi even considered a good manager? It's hard to tell since he inherited the Yankees. I don't think I like him though.

I would love Fredi Gonzalez. I'm mildly intrigued by the thought of Gary Varsho also.

Sandberg sounds like he will take any path to a major league managerial position he can. If no one offers one this offseason and he feels that being a bench coach will get him faster to that goal, then he would take the job.
