Why weren't the Reds motivated by the fight?

Why weren't the Cardinals motivated by playing the 1st place team in the division?

You're right. They are robots that you can predict their results with a series of simulations. Emotions play no role in what happens on the field. How a player or group of players react to something has nothing to do with actual results.

I get what you're saying (i think). The Cardinals are just a better team and what any player says doesn't have an impact on how well they can hit a ball with a bat. But do you really believe that without all of the hubub over Phillips' comments they would have taken them behind the woodshed that badly?

My thoughts on your 2 questions. 1) It was the Cardinals that were defending their honor to begin with. The Reds seemed a little punch drunk for the last 2 games. 2) I think they were motivated, and as I already said, I think the bigger impact was the negative one for the Reds.

I think it's a foolish venture to try to attribute anything from a 3 game set to an intangible factor like this.

If we're going to, I see 2 issues with it:

The Cardinals went down relatively quietly in the first 3 innings. If there was to be a carry-over effect from the comments and the fight, wouldn't it have been immediate?

If any pitcher were to be affected by the fight, it would be Carpenter, since he was actually pitching that day while being involved in the skirmish. You think Cueto's involvement in the fight so rattled him that it threw him off his game a day later? And like the Cardinals the day before on tape delay, this time til the 6th inning when he started to get hit hard?

LaRussa will not be managing most of this weekend.

HERE’S THE OFFICIAL RELEASE FROM MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:

Major League Baseball has issued discipline to five players and the two managers as a result of the on-field incident that occurred in the bottom of the first inning of Tuesday’s game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati . Bob Watson, Vice President of On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball , made the announcement.

Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto has received a seven-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for his violent and aggressive actions during the incident. Unless appealed, Cueto is scheduled to begin serving his suspension on Friday, when the Reds are scheduled to host the Florida Marlins. If appealed, the discipline issued to Cueto will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.

Reds manager Dusty Baker and Cardinals manager Tony La Russa each have received two-game suspensions and undisclosed fines as a result of their actions on Tuesday. Baker will serve the two-game suspension on Friday and Saturday as the Reds host the Marlins. La Russa will serve the two-game suspension on Friday and Saturday as the Cardinals host the Chicago Cubs.

Four players have been fined undisclosed amounts as a result of the incident: Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips and pitcher Russ Springer, currently a disabled list player who came onto the field during the incident; and St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina and pitcher Chris Carpenter.

WHAT ABOUT THE WOODSHED?

How do you account for that robofan?

...I see.

Based on this knowledge, my question still stands, why didn't Cueto get hit hard until 5 innings after the fight?

Molina did come right back and hit a home run in the 2nd, but I see your point. No one will ever know if Cueto gassed out or lost his edge later in the game because of brawl. But I think it's very possible.

His legs probably got tired. All that kicking like a 4 year old having a temper tantrum can wear a dude out.

I think there's something to that.

The biggest tantrum was still the litte exhibition that Carpenter put on the night before.

Carpenter was still pissing and moaning about it today. Granted Phillips looks stupid today because the Reds got swept, but St. Louis has done nothing but prove his comments right.

I made the same point here at work.

When I came back from lunch someone had printed the division standings out and taped them to my monitor with the Cubs highlighted in light blue and the Cardinals in red (at the top).

D*mn it sucks being in Cardinal country.

Because yes, kicking like a little kid < taking your flake of a shortstop down the tunnel to chew him out.

If somebody kicked you in the back with metal spikes you might be upset for a couple days. If that's your definition of being "a little bitch" then I guess you're right. If that garbage happened to Dempster this board would be melting down right now.

Now is Carpenter's being upset going to help him or hurt him in his next start?

And GVilleCubs would applaud Dempster being kicked.

But Carpenter plays the Cardinals: this a Cubs forum and the rules are different.

Carpenter's a repeat offender in the bitching and moaning column.

According to some of my Facebook friends, the Cardinals weren't really trying all year long and didn't have any passion, but now they do.

They were going through the motions, and now they aren't.

Dumbest fans in baseball?

The best part about the last few days was how all of these Cardinal fans came out of the woodwork. Where have they been most of the year? It took them a fight to regain interest in a team that's been hovering around first place for most of the year?

Now they're all acting like the division is in the bag. Never mind that there's still over 45 games left in the season and that they have a slim, one-game lead in the division. Remember when they beat us on Sunday night when it took a homer in extras to save one game out of three at Wrigley? Rooney acted like they won the World Series on his radio call and so did many of the Cards players. It's extremely easy to see where Phillips was coming from. I don't know how Cubs fans can hold that against him, but ok.

Tell you what, the next time there's a Cubs walkoff HR I bet that the Cubs player gets mobbed at home and Santo goes nuts on the radio.

Would you like to bet against that?

I agree. They should've been unhappy.

Brandon Phillips is an overzealous goof. Sometimes that makes me like him, like when he calls out the Cardinals for complaining about stuff. Sometimes it makes me hate him, like when he celebrates go-ahead singles in April like he just won the pennant.

One minor quibble with your Santo/Rooney comparison: Rooney has been screaming "It's a goner!!!" and/or "That's a Cardinals/White Sox winner!!" for decades (the former often emphatically exclaimed irrespective of game situation) and regardless of his team affiliation. Ron Santo is a huge homer who gets excited when the Cubs win, while John Rooney is a terrible baseball announcer who gets excited when he is given the opportunity to spout one of his trademark catchphrases, which he presumably thinks are witty. That having been said, Rooney was "acting like they won the World Series" because he's an obnoxious broadcaster, not because he's part of some organization-wide effort by the Cardinals to be arrogant.

John Rooney was acting like they won the World Series because he's a Cardinals fan.
