"The Best Fans in Baseball" [expletive] aside, at least these rednecks down here know baseball.

When I was in Brooklyn, I caught a ton of [expletive] about my Jenkins jersey, but the most lucid insult I heard was "'86!"

Down here, they argue why Santo can't be inducted because Boyer isn't, all the while buying drinks.

really? you think st louis is better than nashville? no chance.

Nashville's alright, but the Christian Conservatives are confined to one out of the way county up here. Too prevalent down there.

How does that show they know baseball? Santo was better over a longer period of time.

I'd just like to go on record as saying my predictions in this thread represent perfectly why I never bet on sports. I could not have been more wrong about this current Cardinal team. Pretty embarrassing, really, on my part. If you ever hear of me giving you a "sure thing," load up on the other team, because I promise I am wrong. Kenny Rogers I am not (the chicken guy, not the pitcher).

Can't believe I'm saying it, but the Cards still have an entire month to play better and they're only 3 games back in the WC race. So they aren't dead yet, though I would very much like them to be, and I'm overjoyed at their recent struggles :)

The amount of buttache down here is amazing. People are already jumping off the bandwagon and looking forward to watch a football team that went 1-15 last year along with a hockey team that didn't make the playoffs.

The team is Tony LaRussa at his finest.

Stat of the day: The Cardinals have five players currently on their roster who have at least 350 plate appearances this year and an OPS below 700. That's the most of any National League team and tied with the A's for the most in baseball. Aside from the Cards, in the National League, only the Padres even have more than two such players.

So they have a few bums, but a great hitting OF and a HOF 1B, equating to an average offense to go with a terrific pitching staff and they are on pace for 86 wins. What does Larussa have to do with that?

The bums are getting way too much PT. And getting those PA at the top of the lineup too often.

Wasn't it more of a management decision to go with a stars and scrubs approach to the team? Am I just missing the better options residing on the bench to whom LaRussa isn't giving playing time?

Stars and scrubs is fine. It's the stars and sub replacement level but entrenched in the lineup scrubs that is terrible. Giving Schumaker 500+ PA even though he's a terrible hitter and one of the worst 3 defensive 2b in the game. Letting a guy like Stavinoha hang around on the bench forever because he had a dozen nice at bats the first month of the season, even though he doesn't do anything well. Sending down Craig when you face back to back LHP and are 5 games out so you can activate Motte from the DL, while keeping Mike MacDougal and his 2.3+ WHIP, 8.75 ERA and 7+ BB/9 in the bullpen. Giving Randy Winn starts against LHP when he has a sub .400 OPS against them each of the last 2 seasons. Starting Yadier Molina in something absurd like 44 of 45 straight games, then starting your backup catcher who bats LH against a lefty on the day you decide to let Molina sit. Letting one of your LOOGY's sit on the bench with elbow trouble and be used once in 3 weeks before finally putting him on the DL. Letting injured players (Ludwick/Rasmus) sit on the bench forever (a week plus) before putting them on the DL or just letting them sit on the DL without playing so long that you could have just put them on the DL and then activated them before they started a game. Penciling Rasmus in two days ago to start, then scratching him 5 minutes before game time because he thought it was a poor umpiring matchup.

I could keep going, and that's just roster decisions off the top of my head. The thing about the Cardinals is that LaRussa runs the roster, not the GM. The GM probably deserves some of the blame, but LaRussa has acted absolutely senile this season.

Here's another quick example of the TLR fingerprint. The Cardinals are currently 4 games out of the wildcard and Jeff Suppan is starting today's game for no reason. To make matters worse, he strikes out 3.9/9 and his middle infield defense for the day is Aaron Miles at SS and Skip Schumaker at 2b. Miles is a career -18.2/150 UZR guy and Schumaker is -11.6/150.

In the weeks since Brandon Phillips "poked the bear", the Cardinals' postseason odds have dropped by 50.6 %.

Cards, they are a tankin'. I guess as a Cub fan I can allow myself to enjoy watching a team that I hate blow what could have been a special year.

This Cardinal team is despicable this year. There's so much talent and they've wasted it all. It's a shame. They just weren't clicking. Trading Ludwick made it worse and Rasmus and Tony don't get along. Now Albert is involved.

LaRue is done.

Friends say that LaRue contemplated taking legal action against Cueto for the on-field assault that led to his condition but has since discarded the idea. La Rue says that he has no interest in pursuing the matter. However, he remains peeved over the actions of a player Carpenter described as 'some idiot."

"I was going to retire on my own terms," LaRue says. "It's unfortunate that the blow that decided it came from someone kicking me in the head with spikes. I wouldn't say I would change things if you could rewrite history. They say things happen for certain reasons. In this case, I couldn't tell you why. Does it suck that my career is over because Johnny Cueto started kicking me in the head? Yes, it sucks."
