The Cubs should just start fighting the Cardinals at random the rest of the season. Not just during games, like as they're stumbling out of bars trying to fit the key into the ignition.

or during games between the Cardinals and other opponents.

That would be very pro wrestlingesque. And yet that would compel me to watch the rest of the season.

What's that sound? Oh my god! It's the Chicago Cubs music! They're all over the place! Coming from the stands carrying steel chairs! This is madness!

Then again, "Go Cubs Go" probably isn't the most intimidating music ever written.

The sad thing is if every player on both teams somehow got injured/suspended for the rest of the season and had to forfeit the rest of their games, the Cubs would still only be in 3rd place

Phillips does the same thing every game. He taps the umpire and the catcher. When you consider how much Phillips has played against the Cardinals, it's nothing new to Molina.

Molina was being a hardass, simple as that. I really wish Rolen would have beat the piss out of Carpenter.

Love Phillips for what he said. Hate the outcome of the first two games, but I love Phillips.

You really wish someone you don't know would've gotten beat up to avenge whatever he did to 25 other people you don't know? That makes a ton of sense.

And poor, innocent Brandon Phillips. If Phillips was just trying to be playful and tap Molina, then he would've backed down when Molina got in his face. It took him half a second to start tossing off the helmet and jawing right back. Even one of the mods here described Phillips as an "overzealous goof." He knew exactly what he was doing and Molina knew exactly what he was doing.

I'm not even opposed to all this "swag" the Reds are trying to show off. It makes these games ten times more entertaining

Rolen was holding Carpenter back.

He needs to back it up with some action and stop going 0fer. Plus Phillips might have gotten the Cardinals fired up enough that they'll win the division. So yes, good going Phillips.

It's like everyone's devolving to their meathead roots because they saw a fight. Brandon Phillips can't just go 6 for 10 because he hates the Cardinals. Hey way to back it up over a random 10 at bat sampling Brandon!!! Oooh the Cardinals are angry, now they're going to win the world series!! This one's for Daryl!! Edited by SouthSideRyan

but they'd be within 4½ games

Cincinnati is a cultureless, boring, muggy hellhole of a city

As opposed to St. Louis

I was gonna say, I really don't think people in Cincy are too envious of St Louis

STL and Cincy are both shithole cities, but Cincy wishes they had a modicum of STL's baseball success over their past 15 seasons.

LOL @ Reds44, why am I not surprised? This guy echoes the reaction of 99.9% of Reds fans in this town. "Love what he said, you go Brandon, love that fire, love that emotion, blah blah blah." Nothing to be said of "shut up and play." Rob Dibble's meathead schtick fits this town to a "T."

Oh come on, be fair; Reds44 is way worse than your typical Reds fan

Phillips probably shouldn't have been so public about it, but he was right.

I'll agree with you he shouldn't have been so public about it. If you want to make those comments, tell your teammates, not a newspaper. Also, if your Phillips, do you really think the Cardinals will move on and forget about what you said about the? And an update on LaRue, he's probably out with a concussion and the Cardinals are considering calling up an AA catcher.

It's not even him pointing out the Cardinals propensity to bitch and moan about the opposition cheating (which is a fair point). If he would have articulated that to the media, I'd be the first one in his corner. It's the "I hate the Cardinals," "Carpenter is a bitch," "I hate the Cubs and their fans," et al that I have a problem with. A big reason Reds players feel comfortable doing this in the media is because the redneck fanbase in this city LAPS IT UP. Call him a bitch all you want while you're in the locker room, but have a liiiiiiiitle bit of class and composure in front of the camera.

If somebody called you and your teammates a bunch of little bitches and then tried to act like he was just kidding and it's all good...

I was concerned about the Cardinals winning the division again this year until last night. I'm not anymore. Phillips poked the bear.

The Reds are a Dusty Baker team and they're showing it.

The biggest showdowns between Dusty Baker teams and the Cardinals were the '02 playoffs. (Dusty won), the '03 stretch run (Dusty won), and now this year.

Maybe LaRussa should stop being such a hotheaded prick and his team would stop following suit

The Cardinals are going to win the division because Brandon Phillips made them angry?? They're not the Hulk

My goodness that was easy. What a stupid storyline.

There's a 94% chance that he's better than LaRue

The chances are much higher than that.

so i don't see the issue then from a cards fan's perspective.

According to some of my Facebook friends, the Cardinals weren't really trying all year long and didn't have any passion, but now they do.

They were going through the motions, and now they aren't.

Dumbest fans in baseball?

All because of Brandon Phillips. If only motivation were so easy for all of us.

A nice touch would be blue and red armbands with a C on them, not unlike the Nexus in the yellow and black.

Yes, I'm a dork. You knew this.

So Jaime Garcia spent most of the first half completely obliterating every other performance he'd ever put forth in the minor leagues or the bigs while going through the motions? I'd love to see what the guy is capable of when he's trying.
