FIFA needs to ban them except for Bafana Bafana matches.

They're completely awful and are destroying the atmosphere.

Ze Germans haven't fixed their defensive issues from 2006. Australia are actually generating some decent half-chances.

Martin Tyler might be the worst of the PBP guys...

I have a massive facepalm for ESPN, who actually did a "Slovenia is an unexpected group C leader" story.

These horns ruin the atmosphere of the games for me. You can't even here any cheering on a goal.

I mentioned this yesterday. It sounds like the game is being played in a hornet's nest.

That yellow is probably worse.

EDIT: of a call that is. Not worse for their chances.

I want to watch these games, but I can't stand these damn horns.

Is that what all that "buzzing" sound is behind the games? It sounds like a massive swarm of killer bees is hovering over the stadium the whole damn time.

They're called vuvuzela horns. They're absolutely intolerable.

Not only that, but I know nothing about soccer so I can't watch the game on mute. Get rid of those things yesterday.

Time to watch the DVR of Algeria-Slovenia game. Disappointing to see Algeria held on for 79 minutes before surrendering the goal.

I give you 6 minutes before you just start fast-forwarding.

Geez, I hope the US doesn't get bored by them.

i know, the horns were so loud yesterday that you couldn't hear the terrible drunken singing of the english fans.

i kind of like the vuvuzela. pretty unique to soccer. i mean, if im only going to care about soccer every so often, I like a little atmosphere to go along with it

I'd rather hear the fans chanting.

yeah, i like it too. it reminds me of what mike tyson told them to play when being introduced for the berbick fight. "just play noise." that was awesome.

I just can't imagine spending 2 hours blowing a horn.

I think Capello underestimated the US. Despite months of saying they wouldn't, I think he did. How else do you explain putting Milner on the wing and using the terrible Lampard/Gerrard partnership?

Gerrard not being on the left made the English side far more static. The loss of Barry and the absence of Hargreaves really hurt them tactically.

Gerrard on the left would pinch in, forcing Rooney left and Cole upfield, creating far more movement. It's worth noting that the only real move they had involving supporting runs was Gerrard's goal.

They essentially played a typical English game-get it wide, bang crosses in or hit it over the top. Unfortunately for them, the one direct play they had released their worst striker 1 v1.

If that's your game, I would make sure that you had Crouch on the field, rather than Heskey. I might even do something like this:

------Crouch-------------Heskey-------

-(Rooney doing whatever he wants)-

----Gerrard---Lampard--------Lennon

Way late but here's my thoughts on the US-England match:

-Mikey Bradley is once again proving why he's the most under appreciated player on the US squad. He was great yesterday and I expect more of the same over the next two games.

-Wayne Rooney was invisible for huge stretches of the match. I thought he was going to slice and dice the backline but that wasn't even close to the case. I'm not prepared to give the US's defense credit for Rooney's performance, but they played a part.

-I think Friday's tie with Slovenia is even bigger than before. We should expect England to take 3 points from Algeria and that puts the US is a spot where they don't want to have to win vs Algeria to advance.

Wouldn't a tie be a bad thing for Slovenia? Assuming they can't get any points off England, and assuming we handle Algeria, we advance with a tie against them. If they do get points off England, then either we tie with both England and Slovenia (if they tied) and 2/3 advance, or Slovenia and USA advance (with Slovenia victory).

I don't think a tie is bad for Slovenia because it still forces us to beat Algeria in the last match. We should, but it's far from a lock. For Slovenia, a loss would obviously be devastating because then they would likely have to beat England to advance as a tie vs. Algeria would get us through under that scenario.

Something to watch out for, Klose scored his 11th career Cup goal so with good form and a good run from Germany, he's got a shot at tying Ronaldo's record of 15.

No one better than him in the air.

Just saw Denmark put a wicked own goal into their net to benefit Netherlands.

1) Aren't those the same country? IDK

2) There's been an awful lot of shoddy goals in this first round of games. It's fun to watch.

Fantastic job by the Denmark defender to prevent a 3rd goal. Cleared it off the line while going at full speed only a couple of yards after the ball was kicked.
