I figure it'd be best if we have a dedicated World Cup thread. I know there's a terrific soccer thread that we all use, but I figured a seperate World Cup thread would be nice to have.

I'll post the groups and stuff in this post for reference later unless everyone is opposed to this thread's existance.

Looking forward to using the World Cup as another bridge between the Stanley Cup Finals and Bourbonais! U-S-A!

This thread isn't necessary. Discussion of a WC thread came awhile back in the soccer thread and it was determined that it all both World Cup and league soccer offseason discussion weren't impeding on each other.

I just thought the soccer thread was long as it is and it really doesn't need 200 more pages. Plus we'd probably get more casual fans coming into the World Cup thread vs. that huge soccer thread.

If people don't want it, by all means delete it.

I don't see any harm in having this thread. It's not like we have tons of new threads in the Other Sports forum to keep track of. And we can eventually lock this one and we'll just be back to the soccer thread anyway.

It has my vote of approval.

Nelson Mandela's great-granddaughter was killed in a car accident yesterday after the concert. He won't be attending today they are saying now.

The soccer thread has 350 pages since 2006, I doubt the WC would add that much more. But there's no harm in starting a new one.

what the hell was wrong with that goal?

Mexico scored it.

Not sure how the referee missed the South African player standing right on the touchline.

Scored against the host team in the opener. Also vaguely resembling an offside play.

But incredibly vaguely right? I mean, there was a SA player in front of everybody the whole time.

Just one. I haven't seen a close replay yet, but you have to have two. Usually, you have to have two, and the goalkeeper was moving up to play him offside. I don't know if he got there or not.

Yeah I thought it had to be one guy between the attacker and the goalkeeper. The commentators made it seem like the guy on the goal line was all that was needed.

Technically, the rule is "two players," but the goalkeeper is almost always the second one, so we just think of it as one.

The one close replay I saw showed that the goalie might not have gotten off in time. It was a lot closer than the commentators made it seem though.

They really seemed to think that the guy on the goal line was all that mattered and they started speculating about a possible hand ball or some other infraction. Are the announcers just stupid?

Yes. The linesman had his flag up. They should know that means offside. That's like having a football referee signal holding and the announcers trying to figure out why the ball got moved back 10 yards.

I've played soccer and goalkeeper for 15 years and today is the first I've heard of there needing to be 2 players to be onside.

So this is the world's biggest sporting event and it only happens every four years and they get announcers who don't know the offsides rule backwards and forwards.

It sounded to me like they knew it, they just didn't see how they could have called it that way. And instead of saying it must be a home field advantage call, they were acting as though they must have missed it.
