lol @ de rossi. the italians are such a joke.

Hate that guy.

This is why FIFA needs to dole out yellow cards after matches for blatant dives (as well as taking yellow cards away for dives that weren't). The NBA will rescind technicals and change flagrant foul calls after the fact so I don't see what would be so wrong about doing a similar thing in soccer.

Yellow cards are much more common than techs or flagrants, and playing with a yellow changes your play and therefore the course of a game much more than having a technical(which the vast majority of the time just forces you to stop arguing with the official).

And just like the NBA yellow cards can accumulate and cause a suspension later. Giving him a yellow after the game could prevent him from diving in the follow game to avoid suspension. Its an issue they will have to tackle at some point, handing out yellows after the game is an easy way to make a point of this.

It obviously wouldn't affect the actual game where the dive took place but it would, as you said, the following game. If de Rossi, for example, gets a yellow card after this match, he's going to have to watch out the next two games.

I think handing out cards after the fact for the most obvious dives, where a guy goes down without getting touched, is better than doing nothing about it.

But what happens when DeRossi gets a yellow for a bad tackle later this half? Your play is impacted by whether or not you have a card, I don't think it's quite fair to levy them or take them away after the fact. Maybe if you had the ability to do so on a half-by-half basis.

Well then you shouldn't dive if you don't want to get unfairly punished for breaking the rules.

Diving isn't so cut and dry that you can make those types of decisions.

That's obviously the biggest problem - that it wouldn't affect the actual game. It sucked for Boston when Kendrick Perkins got ejected for two techs against Orlando but the NBA still rescinded one of them so he wouldn't get suspended.

Paraguay wouldn't be happy but I think it's fair going forward and it would also force de Rossi to sit out the next match because it would end up being a red card.

Ultimately, I think it would prevent some dives knowing that you could get suspended for it later on even if you got away with it during the game.

There are plenty of cut and dry ones.

If you announce that you will hand out yellows after the fact to anybody who is found to have taken a dive, and a player dives, then he should play the rest of the game with the knowledge that he might have a yellow since he took a dive.

Just to clarify, I'm just talking about plays like de Rossi's where there is clearly no contact at all. Other situations would be far to hard to figure out.

that very easily could've been a red for italy

It really should have been. He got away with one there -- and he already has a yellow, too.

a "friend" who is a gigantic italy homer is telling me that it's really obvious he got cleated in the heel... either i'm blind or he's imagining things.
