Still have never won 2 World Cup games in a row. 1-1-2 tournament blah.

Honestly, that's a very par result given the quality of the U.S. team and who we faced. It's not good or bad, it's just who we are.

The pain of this one won't fully sink in until tomorrow, when I'm watching England-Germany and remember that our soccer archnemesis is Ghana.

Sucks, too, to lose on a breakdown.

Posted (edited)

I know I'm just upset and only seeing things through RW&B glasses, but I find it most interesting that in each of the last 3 matches that the US played in this 2010 World Cup; there was at least one instance - (or repeating incidents [Ghana repeatedly killing time by just falling down without there being a US player within yards of them]) - where reffing played a major factor in the outcome.

I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin' is all.

Based on who we should have beat, should have lost to and could have gone either way, we should have gone 2-1-1 with wins over Slovenia and Algeria, loss to England and draw with Ghana....but since we played Ghana in the knockout round, we should have beaten them so 3-1-0

Equating Ghana players falling down to the disallowed goals by Dempsey and Edu is just stupid. They're not even comparable.

The refereeing hardly played a major role in today's outcome. Ricardo Clark's giveaway and our defense did.

Especially because at most the US lost 1-2 minutes because of the timewasting techniques. And the ref did let the US do a throw in and continue playing while one of the guys was laying flat on the ground right in the middle of the play and only stopped the game when Ghana was about to gain possession near midfield.

that was not the game for everyone in america to be watching if soccer wants to catch on here to a greater extent. holy god is watching people fall down for no reason annoying. and the extra time thing is a mess.

i thoroughly enjoyed my world cup experience, but there's little doubt that i won't watch another soccer game in the next four years.

I know, most will feel that the US should never have needed ET, let alone stoppage time - and I know disallowing good goals is always the gold standard of 'getting screwed' in soccer - however, to say that there was only 3 and a half minutes worth of stoppage time between the two 15 minutes of extra time is a blatant show of favoritism to Ghana (the "home team"), when the ref never really tried to keep them from killing time.

What do our prospects look like for 2014 on the backline?

We have some decent prospects (3/4 of the LA Galaxy's defense) but we need to start getting them ready early this cycle.

Boca and Gooch and Demerit will transition to Gonzalez, Ream, Opara, and Franklin.

Jon Bornstein was our best defender today by a wide, wide margin.

Yeah, thats another factor in why this loss was a kick in the sack. American's don't tolerate that kind of gamesmanship, and Ian Darke was wrong when he said any country would do that.

We wouldn't, England and Germany wouldn't.

The US was gassed at the end...they spent the last 20 minutes trying to lob the ball into the penalty box and hope to get a lucky bounce. They could have played another 30 minutes and probably not scored.

They were gassed, totally. Still, you can't just hoof it and expect to get the ball. Poor tactics.

Also, I'm so disappointed in the defense, Clark, Bradley for starting him, and Findley for missing what should have been a goal.

Still, I'm very proud of our team.

And the few times there was a decent bounce they had no touch.

Plenty of decent chances that we couldn't finish. Same theme all tournament, unfortunately, along with the early goal.

Kick in the guts particularly since it seemed like they were controlling things so well in the 2nd half. It just fell apart in seconds.

So someone run down a calendar for me if they don't mind. What is next for the MNT after licking their wounds and watching the rest of the World Cup stateside.

Will there be a down period before the Gold Cup preparations or will there be friendlies scheduled later this fall?

Edit: Oh I see a friendly vs. Brazil at the new Giants Stadium in August. Interesting.

It'll be Spector--Gooch--Gonzalez--Bornstein as it stands now. A lot can happen obviously, like Opara, Franklin, Ream and maybe that Williams kid for Freiburg, but I feel like Gonzalez is a lock and Gooch will stay in good enough shape to play at 32.

Fuckin Clark is done in the kit. I hope we get some personnel moves happening quickly because I'm ready to move on and start thinking about the Gold Cup next year. Klinssmann? Schmid? Kinnear? I'd rather keep Bradley, but I understand if he's ready to move on. I want to see where Mikey goes, Landon, Clint, Jozy, Benny and good god I can't wait to see what Chuck Deezy looks like in a game. Bring on Brazil in Jersey!

No, I do not accept the results. They are a freaking third world country who has slightly more than 24 million people, we have over 300 million the odds are in our favor, why can our women do it?

I will give them credit for being better ball handlers

And what is this flopping down crap by the Ghanaians, why does that rule exist that you have that ability to chew the clock up with poor acting?

I think the House and Senate should start a full investigation into this matter and stick with our brothers the French.

I would also throw in the way we played conservative after we scored instead of keeping the pressure on, it almost looked like we were hanging loose until the last minute so we could make another miracle shot

Played Well:

Clint

Benny

Bornstein

Edu

Played Poorly

Everyone else.

Landon's touch was really poor in the 2nd half. We had no forwards for most of the tournament. Davies finishes the chance Findley scuffed. Jozy just looked out of gas. Gomez came in and never had a chance, since Ghana scored 3 minutes in and we panicked and just started hoofing it upfield.

Boca and Demerit killed us. No reason for veteran players who have played in the EPL to get burnt on a route 1 ball like that. Howard's positioning was crap on both goals. 'Dolo's service into the box was terrible. Bradley worked as hard as he could, but you could tell he was running on the fumes of his fumes.

Clint was the MOTM and Benny was a close, close 2nd. Clint worked as hard as he could have possibly worked, on and off the ball, drew the PK, constantly demanded the ball and usually did something useful with it.

Lots of what-ifs in this one: what if Benny's first touch hadn't been so heavy at the start of the 2nd half...what if Jozy could have hooked that ball into the net when he fell over...what if Donovan had been serving the ball in late instead of 'Dolo...what if Edu starts?

In the end, though, when most of your team was mediocre to poor, and you still take a team to AET...you should probably have won the game. Poor lineup decision, poor play from Clark and a tired and exhausted team.

It's mostly frustrating because the US had the better of the chances, they totally earned the PK, and two stupid giveaways early in the run of play in the first half and extra time did them in. What the hell is with the defensive lapses in the early going?

Also, the finishing again was atrocious.

And, the "gamesmanship" from Ghana was disgusting, and the referee really needed to do something about it. By then, the USMNT was totally gassed (thanks again, Rico!), and they weren't scoring anyway, but it was totally classless.

If Klinsi doesn't get the job, my vote is for Sigi Schmid. Don't really want Bradley to stay on. Even with today's lineup screwup, he's done a very good job and rebuilt the midfield. One cycle is enough, though.

Like most on here, I couldn't understand Clark starting (or Findley). At least Bradley corrected the Clark mistake early. I was calling for Feilhaber-for-Findley about 30 minutes in, happy Bradley made the move at half. Those moves helped, but the starting XI was a mistake. Still don't understand what Bradley sees in Clark.

For the game, maybe it was tired legs, but it was disappointing to see the team eschew possession and play overly direct (read: long balls) after conceding the goal to Gyan. Perhaps there wasn't enough left in the tank, but the tactics after that goal were basically a wing and a prayer.

Oh, my fortune for a finisher . . .

God I really wish we could have seen what Jozy and Davies could have done together in the Cup.
