Am I having a stroke, or did I hear bagpipes playing what sounded like "My Country tis of thee"?

I'd love for Argentina to do something like this to Mexico (complete with a wrongly disallowed goal also). It wouldn't surprise me as Mexico isn't a team to bunker so it should be an open game.

I want to see Messi bitch slap Dos Santos.

God Save the Queen. Same song, different lyrics

This is easily Europe's worst performance in the World Cup.

They had six teams reach the second round, which easily the fewest since the Cup had 16 teams advance in 1982. They had 10 teams advance six times and nine once, in 2002.

They'll get exactly three teams in the quarters since the six teams are matched up against each other. That's the fewest out of the 15 tournaments which have had quarterfinals. The previous low was four, in 1970 (Mexico) and 2002.

Europe is also on a run of 14 consecutive World Cups with at least one team from the region in the final.

EDIT: Germany has now made the quarterfinals in 15 straight Cups.

That is an unreal record.

So England can't rebound from their flat play in group play. USA can't overcome a backline weakness and conceding early goals. Knockout round exposes Group C's survivors for what they are.

That ball from the back leading to the 4th goal was insane.

And of course it was Larrionda that missed the English goal.

You know who's been completely terrible? Wayne Rooney. Totally terrible and useless in every match.

i missed the second half (church), but rooney was just awful in the first half. passes to nobody, runs that didn't accomplish anything, no ability to beat a defender in space. i don't know if he was putting too much pressure on himself or if he's just wildly overrated, but you're right, he was downright bad the whole tourney.

Didn't watch the 2nd half of Germany/England, but the first half and the 2 games yesterday were both excellent games to watch. I'm not a big soccer fan, but I don't think I've ever seen 2 1/2 more entertaining games.

Well, obviously it's bittersweet after yesterday:

But I thoroughly enjoyed today's thrashing. Germany is my second favorite team (followed closely by Holland) due to heritage, and I've always disliked the overrated, pompous English side. Went to Chatham Tap -- an English soccer pub -- sporting a Germany shirt. Luckily, there were a few others.

Here's hoping Argentina similarly thrashes Mexico.

Yes. The bad call made it all the more glorious.

Someone tell Messi to pretend he's facing Arsenal in the Champions League.

And if you liked yesterday's games, raw, you should definitely watch this one. There should be tons of chances for both sides.

Couldn't have happened to a better team.

And seriously, they mobbed the assistant? You deserve to give up the goal for that display.

lol, and then Marquez straight trucks somebody over

Do soccer refs always suck as bad as they've seemed to in this World Cup?

Yes.

No.

That was a truly horrendous mistake though.

And 2-0 now
