Many of us were ticked off at Soriano at the end of the season last year, I was ticked off we even signed him to that contract, but what will it take for you to forgive him?

We all know he can have a nice June but, without being ridiculous, what types of numbers would make you forgive him for last season?

Really?

Seems like a dick move to to be "ticked off" at a player for playing hurt.

There's nothing to forgive. It's not like he was tanking games on purpose. The guy was injured and had a horrible year, but seemingly not for a lack of effort.

Maybe the more appropriate question is what it would take for one to forgive Hendry for giving him that contract?

I guess Hendry might need to forgive himself for that contract unless Sori has a much better year.

Other than that though, there's nothing to forgive.

he seems like a decent guy and he tries hard out there. hendry was the idiot for giving a guy with his skill set that much money. i was never mad at soriano.

I don't know about needing to "forgive" him, but I'd be happy if he could put up a .270/.325/.500 line. I don't know if it's realistic to expect much better than that.

Agree with those who express sentiments that there really is no way Soriano could hope to put up the type of numbers that contract warrants.

I'd be happy with:

140+games played

.270avg

.350obp

20-25 Home Runs

75+RBI

I'll never forgive him for getting hurt that one time by jumping as he caught a fly ball, like he's done without a problem for years.

We're all being sarcastic, right? right??

I'm not a Soriano fan, but he hasn't done anything to require forgiveness. I hope he has a good season and I'll be rooting for him to do so, but the blame for his bad contract falls squarely on Jim Hendry.

Blame the Trib more than Hendry. They're the ones who authorized the last hurrah spending spree to drive up the price of the team. Soriano was the shiny toy in the winter of 2006 and they weren't going to leave without him.

That's dumb. They approved the spending, they didn't force Hendry to screw up the spending. Hendry let the OF cupboard go bare, which is why he felt the need to sign Soriano (and then Fukudome) in the first place. Had he done a better job as GM before then, or even a better job as minor league coordinator before that, maybe they wouldn't have needed to go hard after an OF.

It's been widely rumored John McDonough wanted to make a splash before the '07 Cubs Convention. The Cubs of '06 sucked and McDonough wanted eliminate all the bad feelings from that year--and make one last run at that World Series ring he had promised Cub fans. What better way--in his mind--than to give one of the biggest free agents of that winter a huge contract! Shows the commitment by the Tribune company to make it happen! Here's a buttload of money, Jimbo, sign him to an 8/136 contract now ('cause I"m pretty sure I won't be around to see it through, thankfully)!

Pretty plausible, if you ask me. Wouldn't surprise be a bit if all of that were true.

I love Sori as a person. I just didn't love him as an athlete last year. There's a difference. I've never thought of Soriano as a player that gives less than 100%. I think last year really got to him emotionally, to be honest. It was pretty obvious he was disappointed in himself, and tried to rush himself back (unsuccessfully) pretty much the entire second half.

The Cubs have tried to make a splash every year around the Convention. That doesn't mean they had to get Soriano. It's really convenient to blame others for Hendry's failures.

I agree. As far as his albatross contract is concerned, the blame goes no farther than the desk of Jim Hendry. But while that applies not blaming the Tribune or whatever, it also applies to not blaming Soriano for his own contract.

Bottle of Grey Goose and the phone number to one of those fine women he's always pictured hanging out with.

All will be forgiven.

Yeah.

Forgiveness has a price, Sori. Pay up.

We all know that Soriano will never live up to his contract, how can he? However, when healthy he was a big part of winning us two division titles in his first two years here and he did play hurt for most of last year. I could do without the hop before catches and swinging at any and all breaking stuff off the plate, but there is simply nothing to forgive him for.
