I don't understand what Coach K did to inspire such hatred either. However, not being a Duke fan, I certainly would rather have seen the upstart Bulldogs win one.

Duke can expect to be in contention every year. It would have really been nice for a non-standard contender to take home the trophy.

And there's no doubt it would have been the better story.

I have to rephrase what I said last night:

Thank God that the Saints won the Super Bowl to counteract the evil that is Duke winning the NCAA, the Yanks winning the World Series, and BAMA winning the BCS in a single calendar year. yuck

Speaking as someone who roots for probably the 2nd-most hated sporting entity in America, it just doesn't lead to anything positive to play the "why, oh God why?" game with people who hate your team. Asking why and pointing out that your guys do things the 'right way' and all that jazz won't change anybody's mind.

I like Duke, certainly more than UNC, but especially on a day when they were playing a popular mid-major for a title, it seems silly to complain about people rooting against them (and this was more about Dickie V's complaints than Duke's fanbase proper).

It does kind of irk me when a major commentator comes on and acts like people should feel ashamed or something for not rooting for X team.

This is the only thing I read from your post OMC. God editing is fun.

Psst: Bama is still not as bad as the Yankees. Stop believing the media hype.

Also, the NCAA tournament has spoken: The ACC was the best conference this year, while the Horizon came in a close second. Big East and Big Ten tied for third, with the SEC and Big 12 coming up a little behind them in fifth.

I agree about the Horizon being the 2nd best conference but question the rest of this

Man that was almost the best game ever. No way will a mid major ever win it. That was the chance.

You could look at it that way, or you could look at it as mid major teams becoming more competitive in the past few years, which might lead to more opportunities.

If Michigan State can make it to the final 4 as often as they have, I've got to believe mid majors will have more opportunities.

Butler's only losing one player (Veasley) so who knows, they could have another shot next year.

Really though this was the weakest field ever. College bball should be a lot better next year. I doubt Butler gets this far again. They had a great shot against a less than super opponent. Gave it a hell of a run.

It's obviously going to be tough for them to get back, I was just pointing out that they only lose one player and that the next mid-major team to make a run at it could be them again next year.

Yeah, I'm more hoping that mid majors might continue to have opportunities like this. I don't know that it will happen. I thought it was really fun.

Seeing #1 seeds go down is one of my favorite things in the tourney. Not because I want to see the #1's fail, but because I love to see these underdog teams do well.

the more success the mid-majors have, the less the Big 6 will schedule them during the regular season, which will continue to artificially lower the mid-majors' RPI

RPI is trash, but you can definitely game it without playing Big 6 teams.

it's total trash, and the selection committee claims they don't use it (which is BS, because they have to compare a bunch of schedules that have no similarities).

It won't have to anymore everyone will be in. I just wonder if they will put a bubble team in like an Illinois or Uconn this year and give them a bye before they do the auto bids from smaller conferences. I think they will and that's a crime.

Congrats, they beat a 13 seed and Texas A&M; a team that dies year in and year out in the second round.

Who cares?

Hang on a second here. A&M was an 8/9 seed the last two years. UCONN crushed us last year, but in 2008 we took #1 UCLA all the way to the wire and the pictures below show a no call with A&M down 2 points in the waning seconds of the game. And we lost a tight one to Memphis in the 2007 Sweet Sixteen.

Why will college basketball be better next year? I don't think I can agree with that.

Second, while I doubt Butler makes it back to the title game, they figure to be even better next year (assuming, as I do, that Hayward returns).

Well I've read that this was supposed to be the recruiting class that will replenish the college game. Maybe I am expecting too much, but I really think a lot of the good teams will get a lot better next year.

That would have been the greatest ending in the history of any of the major sports, period. Man, you talk about almosts. Hayward will be replaying that for the rest of his life. He couldn't have done any better for a shot in 3.6 seconds.

Is that the biggest "almost" since the Titans/Rams Super Bowl?

Bigger. That "only" would've sent the game into OT (assuming the Titans went for the PAT).

I'm thinking...there's never been a moment like that in the history of American sports. Chalmers making the 3 against Memphis was just as do or die but it was only to tie the game and it wasn't a half court buzzer beater.

Not taking into consideration popularity of the sport, but it's comparable to the (I think) 1994 women's basketball national championship game that was decided by a 3-pointer at the buzzer in a 1 or 2 point game.
