yes i'm sure that brees signed with new orleans because of hurricane katrina, not because they offered him the most money and had the most confidence that his shoulder was fine.

Let's talk about lazy. Is being lazy not reading anything said by Brees or Sean Payton and just assuming stuff based on absolutely nothing but your own ideas or is lazy reading about why Brees decided to sign and watching interviews where Payton and Brees talk about it? ESPN the Mag just had a story on this an issue ago. Payton was taking Brees to the airport and he was going to fly to Miami. Brees said he was leaning towards Miami but then Payton missed a turn and got into a neighborhood that was destroyed (claims it wasn't on purpose). Brees saw the damage and told Payton he was going to sign with the Saints because he felt a calling to help the city. So yes Brees signed because of Katrina.

He signed because nobody else [expletive] wanted him. Even Miami (the only other team) was lukewarm at best. Brees can go around and say it was because of Katrina but it's because no other teams wanted to sign him and the Saints easily offered the most money and the chance to be a starter. Nobody is going to turn down millions of dollars and a starting job to be a backup and not make money just because a city got ravaged by a hurricane.

Yeah I guess you know what Brees was thinking better than Brees himself.

Please explain to us which other teams were seriously interested in signing Brees back then.

there were probably other teams interested but the key is that brees signed a 6 year, $60M deal there. i'd like cubbiebum to show me where brees left better money on the table to go to new orleans because they were recovering from hurricane katrina.

Exactly. And they were the only team - to our knowledge - that told him he'd start if he went there.

What Brees has done in/for New Orleans (read the SI article about him from a couple weeks ago) is really awesome, and there's no doubt he's a good guy, but he didn't 'go there to save New Orleans'.

#-o How are you not getting this?! After his first choice decided to go with Culpepper, he realized that Lord Katrina had instilled a new destiny into his soul. His new destiny was to be the savior to all who were suffering in New Orleans. And now, the fact that some people in New Orleans are still sad and don't have new things yet is going to make all the Saints better at football tomorrow.

ITS NOT THAT COMPLICATED

The contract thing is kind of what I meant. I'm sure every team in the league would have loved to have Brees if he would have signed a 2 year, $10M deal. But he wanted starter money and to be a starter and there were two teams that were at least semi-interested and one decided on Daunte Culpepper instead.

I'll just say this as a Saints fan: having Drew Brees fall into our laps is one of the biggest blessings any franchise has ever received.

It's crazy to think about how things would have played out if the Colts had drafted Ryan Leif. What an awful, awful thought.

The ESPN Mag article says that the Saints offered him the 6-$60 deal but he didn't sign it and wanted to talk to other teams. He then had the detour with Payton and signed it before talking to any other teams.

You don't know New Orleans's suffering until you play bellhop for 4 months there.

You are right. I know you didn't mean to be but working downtown where you meet a lot of people who live around New Orleans and talk to them everyday you learn about the city. I have been here almost 9 months and have worked at customer service jobs the whole time. I also went out and reported high school football and sat in crowd where many of them would still talk about Katrina and the city not being rebuilt. One of my roommates also has worked for the America Corps. out in the parishes for 2 years and I hear a lot about the people out there. SO yeah I would say I know how people in the city feel pretty well. Not as well as people who have lived here their whole lives but probably better than anyone on this board.

He must have gotten the phone call during his "detour."

After Brees visited and the Dolphins made their final decision not to sign him, Saban even did Brees a favor. The coach called agent Tom Condon and told him that the Dolphins weren’t going to sign Brees, but added that they weren’t going to announce that publicly.

Armed with that info, Condon ran one final bluff at the Saints and got the desperate organization, which was still reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, to give Brees a six-year, $60 million contract. It included a $10 million guarantee and another $12 million due after the first season. At the time, it was considered a steep price.
