The only shocker here is that he actually admitted it. And is he saying he only used in '98?

EDIT: Your article has more detail then the one I saw on ESPN. He used them more than just the 1998 season.

This was about a 9.99 out of 10 on the "no sh*t Sherlock" scale. I can't wait for the Cardinal Nation faithful to wig out down here.

Now where is Sammy or has he forgotten how to speak English again?

Desperate attempt to get into the HOF. Or it could just help him transition into his hitting coach role by admitting things up front.

I am guessing it's the latter, LaRussa knows/knew he used them and so did the Cardinal's FO they probably wanted him to come clean with this before the start of ST and the season to keep the secondary questions about stuff like this at a minimum when all the players are together and just get it out of the way now. If it helps him get into the HOF that's a nice bonus IMO.

It has been said, but now that he is back in the public eye, the media was gonna dog him on this issue to no end. He needed to do this to prevent it from becoming a year long distraction.

That said, this is definitely a "well, no sh*t" announcement.

I love how ESPN is treating it like some sort of revelation.

Here is the full statement: Text of the statement Mark McGwire issued Monday, admitting he used steroids during his career:

"Now that I have become the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, I have the chance to do something that I wish I was able to do five years ago.

I never knew when, but I always knew this day would come. It's time for me to talk about the past and to confirm what people have suspected. I used steroids during my playing career and I apologize. I remember trying steroids very briefly in the 1989/1990 off season and then after I was injured in 1993, I used steroids again. I used them on occasion throughout the '90s, including during the 1998 season.

I wish I had never touched steroids. It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era.

During the mid-'90s, I went on the DL seven times and missed 228 games over five years. I experienced a lot of injuries, including a ribcage strain, a torn left heel muscle, a stress fracture of the left heel, and a torn right heel muscle. It was definitely a miserable bunch of years and I told myself that steroids could help me recover faster. I thought they would help me heal and prevent injuries, too.

I'm sure people will wonder if I could have hit all those home runs had I never taken steroids. I had good years when I didn't take any and I had bad years when I didn't take any. I had good years when I took steroids and I had bad years when I took steroids. But no matter what, I shouldn't have done it and for that I'm truly sorry.

Baseball is really different now -- it's been cleaned up. The commissioner and the players' association implemented testing and they cracked down, and I'm glad they did.

I'm grateful to the Cardinals for bringing me back to baseball. I want to say thank you to Cardinals owner Mr. DeWitt, to my GM, John Mozeliak, and to my manager, Tony La Russa. I can't wait to put the uniform on again and to be back on the field in front of the great fans in Saint Louis. I've always appreciated their support and I intend to earn it again, this time as hitting coach. I'm going to pour myself into this job and do everything I can to help the Cardinals hitters become the best players for years to come.

After all this time, I want to come clean. I was not in a position to do that five years ago in my congressional testimony, but now I feel an obligation to discuss this and to answer questions about it. I'll do that, and then I just want to help my team."

I wish I had never done steroids even though doing so helped to make me untold millions of dollars and brought me fortune and fame. So kids, don't do drugs!

I'm a good person. Am I good person? I am a good person.

In other breaking news, Tiger Woods is addicted to whores.

WINNAR

:-)) Thanks!

But in all seriousness, I think that La Russa convinced him to just get this out there and over with by Spring Training. I'm annoyed at how 'big' of a story this will be the next week or so

I'm glad this came out now, so his face is plastered all over espn.com now and not during ST, when we Cardinals faithful should be much more worried about how he'll be helping Rasmus and Ludwick hit lots of moon shots.

I don't know any Cardinals fans, personally, that defended him as a clean player. I guess there are plenty of idiots over at Cards Talk that will act all shocked and outraged and say "I ALWAYZ TRUSTED HIM!?!!!"

Personally, I never liked what he did to Cards games in the late 90s. We'd be losing 7-2, and he'd get a standing ovation for a massive foul ball then striking out. Hello, people, we're losing the game! Argh. I can't say he didn't help revitalize fan interest in the team after a pretty crappy early 90s.

So when does Tony Larussa come out and admit that he silently condoned steroid usage by his players on the A's and Cardinals so long as it won games? Oh wait, that would never happen.

Doesn't bother me much. I'm sure Cubs fans still think highly of Sosa, in the same light Cards fans will still be a fan of Big Mac.

Don't be so sure, though it has little do do with any PED use.

It's cause Cubs fans are stupid

Pretty much.

Why was he not in a position to come out when he was before Congress?

My guess is it would have something to do with the players union.

Or maybe a statute of limitations regarding laws he may have broken to get these steroids? I have no idea. Regardless, it's good to see Big Mac come clean, even if isn't surprising in the least.

It's probably more to do with a foolish belief that denial would still work and keep his image cleaner than finally admitting it.

He hit 49 HR's as a rookie and would have likely still made plenty had he never touched them. He did make more by taking them but he would have still made plenty without them. That said I agree when people like this admit they need to stress the kids more so they understand that it wasn't worth it in the end.

Anyways my first reaction was regret that the crazy youtube Cards fan was retired. This video would have been epic.
