There's nothing inherent at Ole Miss that would prevent the right coach from competing for an NC every now and then. It's not like LSU was a cadillac program before Saban got there (at least for a long time). Same with Florida and Spurrier.

Again, it goes back to the talent though. Other than Arkansas, MS has the smallest population of any SEC state yet has three Division I schools in it and has two powerhouses right across the border. LSU can completely monopolize their instate talent and with a school like Florida it doesn't matter that there are other big schools in the state because there are 18.6 million people there. MS only has a population of 2.9 mil. Also, schools in Alabama can afford to have two D-I schools competing because their population is double that of Ark or MS.

Ole Miss did win 2 or 3 NC's back in the 50's and 60's, but of course that was a very, very different time.

Yes, all of which could be ameliorated by the right hire.

LSU had its resources but the biggest change, by far, was going from Dinardo to Saban. When Miles is done laying waste to the program a smart coach in the SEC West will be right there to change the pecking order.

Edit: And I'm not saying Ole Miss can be become a juggernaught like Saban is building at Bama, I'm just saying a good coach could put them in the position to fight for NCs every now and then if things break the right way. I'm thinking more like Tuberville at Auburn and less Urban Meyer at Florida.

Sorry to derail the thread, but anyway, what makes us Hog fans delusional is that we want to compete for more than a West title every few years and a Cotton Bowl. We want BCS bowls and chances to play for the NC. Nutt would never get us there, Petrino might.

That's just not gonna happen at mid-level SEC schools like Ole Miss or Ark. I think what Ole Miss has done the past two years (being ranked in top 15 and being about two wins away from being a BCS school) is about as close as it is gonna get for schools our size. We aren't LSU or BAMA and we never will be.

However, Arkansas probably should be better than they are though. Y'all have the entire state to recruit from basically. Mississippi has an insane amount of football talent but it is completely distributed between Ole Miss, Miss St, and our lovely neighbors right next door: LSU and BAMA. Throw in the fact that Southern Miss occasionally steals someone like DeAndre Brown, and it is really spread thin. So I guess at least the Mississippi schools have an excuse. There's no reason Arkansas shouldn't get the majority of your in state players.

And if Petrino is ever gonna do anything, he sure as hell should recruit better than he did this past year. 49th in recruiting?? At least Nutt had y'all in the top 25 just about every year.

I agree with the recruiting thing. Last year was odd, in that I really thought he'd be able to recruit off of what the O was doing to just about everyone last year. Now as far as being able to play for a NC, with what the Hogs have done in track and basketball, and ARE doing in baseball there's no reason to believe that they can't get there in football. Not a perennial contender, but contending every four to five years shouldn't be out of the question. Hell, the Hogs were a Percy Harvin long run and a muffed punt away from playing for the NC in 2006, and that was under HDN.

The #3 rated center in the nation for 2011 committed to Auburn yesterday....Chizik continues to build an impressive o-line. Unfortunately, Auburn's D is going to be their problem again in 2010 me thinks.

I think you underestimate those schools. Look at Iowa this coming year. If they are able to get their O-line rebuilt, they're loaded everywhere else, they could very well contend for the National Title. And that's from the smallest B10 school (well, public school) in the state with the smallest recruiting base in the conference and having to share that base with another BCS school (well, Iowa State is kind of a BCS school). Short of that, they've been to what, 7 New Years day games (2 of them BCS) in the last 10 seasons? That's pretty good success for a team with the limitations they have.

With the right coach schools like Ole Miss, MSU, Arkansas should have it much easier than Iowa.

it's really embarrassing when an alum of a mid-major is talking crap to you and there's nothing you can say back because their team has dominated yours for so long.

wait, is this supposed to be an insult?

It's going to be tough for illinois fans to get tickets, I think. From what I've heard, they get 3,000 tickets, the Cubs get 5,000, and NU gets 30,000. You can't buy NU's tickets without seasons. There was also something about Stubhub but I had to get back to work! Anyone catch that?

Nope, they decided on Illinois.

Full beer sales too, which should be fun. Student sections in the bleachers with the field running NW to SE. Teams will share one sideline.

Dedicating the bleachers as a student section was an obvious but great move. I'm going to be jealous of that atmosphere.

Just renewed my season ticket and placed an order for the Wrigley game. Tickets are $50 to $150, so not as bad as the Winter Classic.

Now it's just time to play the waiting game.

I'm rather pissed that I couldn't watch the press conference. My work computer has an old version of silverlight that you can't uninstall without logging in as the administrator. And you can't install a working version until the old version is uninstalled.

Difference is that Iowa has to play the likes of Ohio State, Wisconsin and Penn State, whereas the Hogs have to play LSU, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, etc.

Wii bit tougher in the SEC IMO.

Cedric Reed (No. 1 DE in Texas) ---> Texas

If we get Turner and Brown this class will be much better than last years.

Bama has been recruiting Brown hard, but the feeling is Brown won't leave Texas. I already have Brown as a Longhorn.

Brown isn't expected to leave the Big 12, but when you get an offer from every major school in the country who knows. Him and Aaron Green claimed to have like the switch in the Texas offense going to a more prostyle with Gilbert under center. Both being from San Antoino I think Texas gets one of the two.
