I said all along that if the NCAA was ever going to be taken seriously again as a rule enforcer they needed to act, and they did and then some. I really didn't expect a postseason ban of any kind.

The 20 scholarships are spread out over 4 years, so that's not nearly as big of a deal as the bowl ban.

How is that possible when USC owns the NCAA and is this untouchable behemoth run amok?

Ok, that's my one indignant comment on this whole matter. I swear.

given all this [expletive] they've done, if they don't lose some games, bowl, and a national title, i'd keep my mouth shut and be happy the penalties are all forward-looking.

Raisin would be allowed, nay, legally obligated, to tear off and stomp on any 2004 USC national champion t-shirts he sees.

I can't wait until 1 central...

@LATimesfarmer: With the hammer dropping on USC today, Los Angeles is losing its third pro football team since 1995.

So everyone else is allowed to be surprised and happy about how harsh the penalties are but I should be grateful that they aren't worse?

That makes no sense.

sure it does. people are happily surprised b/c it's been 6 YEARS and no one thought the NCAA would ever actually do anything of consequence. The penalty, though harsher than most expected, is not as harsh as many/most would have wanted. Since loss of a national title and heisman trophy would logically be on the table, if I were a fan, I'd be pretty happy they stopped short of that.

Of course it isn't what most of you would have wanted. "Most" people think that USC was putting up Reggie Bush in a baller crib in San Diego so they think the death penalty or something nearly as dumb was in order.

I'm talking about expectations based on what actually did occur. So your expectations were exceeded and mine were not. I mean I have no choice to eat it but I'm not going to be grateful for it. I have no reason to be if the haters are popping champagne.

do whatever you want. i'm just saying if it were my team, i'd recognize that we got away with highway robbery and the national title and heisman trophy are worth more to the program than 20 schollies over the next 4 years.

You're forgetting the two year postseason ban.

And you'd recognize you got away with highway robbery as a fairly severe punishment was being handed down? Is it easy keeping all those contradictory ideas in your head at the same time?

it's like going to jail for robbing a bank years after the fact. on one hand you got arrested and the punishment is fairly severe. but on the other hand, no one can take away all those hookers you bought with all that money.

ding, ding, ding, ding.

no one's forgetting anything. the post-season ban isn't going to matter this year b/c they aren't going to be in the title game anyway. maybe next year it will have a real significant impact, might depend on how many kids jump ship on kiffy.

Just so we're clear, if I were thinking rationally and not as a homerific USC fan I would recognize that USC got away with highway robbery, even as a punishment was being handed down, and I should be relieved, nay, GRATEFUL, that the punishment wasn't worse even though it exceeded most everyone's expectations.

i don't know that you need to capitalize grateful, but i think you're getting the gist of it.
