what was a just punishment, in your mind? or do you believe nothing was warranted? or even that no wrong-doing has occurred?

I never said the punishment wasn't just. I was challenging the assertion that I should be grateful that it wasn't worse.

Was there wrong-doing? Yeah, probably, according to the rules put down by the NCAA.

On the other hand, I don't really think there's anything wrong with someone using their private money to get someone to go to their school. That's not what happened here but it should clarify my thinking for you. Somehow big time college sports has carved out this place where things that are standard norms in other walks of life are deemed heinous violations of the moral code.

so you think this punishment (2-year bowl ban and loss of 20+ scholarships over 4 years) is just? I don't recall you saying one way or the other, which is why I asked (and am asking again, since you didn't answer).

I don't know.

I don't really think about what constitutes some idea of justice. No crimes were being committed here so I'm not going to concern myself with it.

All I know is that the next two years will suck more than they otherwise would have and that I'll still watch way too much college football on Saturdays.

ESPN"]The NCAA handed the University of Southern California a two-year postseason football ban and vacated wins in Reggie Bush's final season, among other penalties, for violations in its football, men's basketball and women's tennis programs on Thursday.

The university was put on four years' probation, while the football program was hit with a two-year postseason ban and the men's basketball team was banned for one year from the postseason, which had already been self-imposed by the school.

USC was hit with scholarship reductions in football and basketball and recruiting restrictions for the men's basketball team.

The school was fined $5,000 and forfeits its $206,200 it earned from the 2008 men's basketball tournament.

In addition the university must vacate some regular-season and postseason wins in all three involved sports.

...........

The football team must vacate all wins in which Bush played while ineligible, starting in December 2004. The NCAA accepted USC's self-imposed penalty of vacating all wins in which Mayo competed during the 2007-08 season.

They'll lose 30 scholarships over a 3 year period.

Here's the report: http://www.ncaa.org/wps/portal/ncaahome?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/ncaa/ncaa/ncaa+news/ncaa+news+online/2010/division+i/bowl+ban+among+penalties+for+southern+california

• Scholarship reductions in football (to 15 initial grants and 75 total grants for each of the 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years, which represents a decrease of 10 scholarships for each of the three seasons)

What does that mean?

Full report

Language straight out of MTV:

During a telephone conversation in late 2004, student-athlete 1 informed agency partner A that he (student-athlete 1) was embarrassed to drive his current vehicle, a pick-up truck, and wanted a different vehicle. Agency partner A agreed to provide the cash to purchase a vehicle. A short while later, in December 2004, student-athlete 1 located a vehicle he wanted, and agency partner A gave student-athlete 1's stepfather several thousand dollars in cash for a down payment on the vehicle. Student-athlete 1 later contacted agency partner A to request additional money needed to purchase wheel rims for the vehicle. Agency partner A then drove from San Diego to Los Angeles and gave student-athlete 1 an additional several thousand dollars in cash. Approximately one week later, agency partner A gave student-athlete 1 another sizable cash payment, which the student-athlete used for a car alarm and audio system.

what I just posted: the limit is 15 per year. So you can't use EEs or whatever other tricks that all schools use to be flexible with their scholarships. USC can only take 15 scholarship players each year.

Does it say anything about giving free transfer as an exception to the 1-year sit out rule? I didn't see it on first reading, but heard it might be in there.

My understanding is that the NCAA can waive the 1 year transfer rule if a postseason ban is as long as their remaining eligibility.

So I think juniors and seniors can transfer and play somewhere else immediately.

ESPN"]The only gesture of mercy: No television ban. Said the report, "The committee seriously contemplated imposing a television ban penalty in this case. However, after careful consideration, it ultimately decided that the penalties below adequately respond to the nature of violations and the level of institutional responsibility."
Posted
Meaning the NCAA didn't want to annoy its television partners by pulling the only national draw the Pac 10 has. I bet USC does really good television numbers this season.

That might become moot depending on who picks up the Big XII leavings.

I'm kind of shocked they'd even consider a TV ban. If I'm remembering correctly, Auburn in 1993 was the last time that happened.

ESPNews just said that if USC loses its appeal, it will have to vacate the 04-05 national championship

please just give it to auburn. im going to vomit if they give that to OU.

Television bans used to be common, but I think they're unfair, not to the team that's being punished but to their opponents. Innocent teams would lose television coverage and revenue.

What does that mean?

On top of what GR said (only 15 scholarships a year), that means they can't have more than 75 scholarship players at any time till after 2013-2014 (so by 2014, USC will probably only have about 60 scholarship players).

"Looking forward to getting my PAC-10 championship ring from the '04 season. Thanks @claymatthews52,'' Rodgers tweeted, per the Post Crescent.

Packers linebacker Clay Matthews redshirted the 2004 season at USC, when Rodgers was in his final season at Cal. USC won the Pac-10 that year, while Cal came in second.
