the reggie bush thing is probably less important than the tim floyd and rodney guillory stuff. if you have a star player whose family is being given a nice house and a coach giving money to a booster, and a booster buying a star basketball player all kinds of things, doesn't that kind of scream "lack of institutional control"?

Less important to whom?

Aren't we talking about the football program here? The Tim Floyd stuff is more important to whatever punishment the NCAA hands down on the football program than the Reggie Bush stuff? That doesn't sound reasonable.

What about the recruiting violation when Reggie Bush called and helped recruit McKnight.

People in glass houses . . . .

I believe LSU is looking into possible NCAA violations, according to Athletic Director Joe Alleva.

“LSU is currently researching possible violations involving one assistant coach and one student-athlete in the sport of football,” Alleva said in a statement. "The involved student-athlete has not participated in competition for LSU. By procedure, the Southeastern Conference Office has been made aware of the circumstances by LSU."

well I guess that makes what USC did fine, then.

Tim Floyd should effect the football program? What a reach.

Hey, my team doesn't have any potential violations. What about the recruiting violation when Reggie Bush called and helped recruit McKnight?

Apples and Oranges. I think a university has a lot more control over its coaches than outside agents. Doesn't the LSU incident (as Truff would say) kind of scream "lack of institutional control"?

Are you going to provide a link where Reggie acknowledged "recruiting" McKnight?

Well, McKnight said he did when he signed his loi and then quickly retracted after receiving a phone call from Carroll. I think it's clear to see unless you just stick your head in the sand.

As for the LSU situation, as best as it is known it appears to be an isolated incident and the student-athlete did not compete in contests for LSU. I'm not minimizing it, and if it is found to be a major infraction, I'm sure there will be a penalty.

As for USC, let's see...knowledge of the Bush situation, recruiting violation with McKnight, McKnight driving a fancy car, among others...when you have that much going on, yes it does appear there was lack of institutional control.

Another major difference is that LSU actually benefits from anything that could conceivably get Les Miles fired more quickly.

And yet Miles has as many national championships as coach as LSU as Carroll won at USC.

you're well on your way to not reaching that 60% mark required by your socialist spelling teacher.

Well I disagree but I don't really have the energy to rehash that pointless discussion.

I will admit that Les Miles has more or as many national titles as many, many coaches that he is much worse than. He's a horrible in game coach that makes perposterously stupid decisions. The Ole Miss game was no isolated incident it's just that in past years he was bailed out with luck. And there are plenty of Tigers fans who wouldn't disagree with that.

i'm just thinking about the athletic department as a whole. how can usc's punishment be a handful of forfeited wins, loss of a few scholarships and the basketball team bowing out of ncaa postseason play in a year where they aren't good? you have guys who are either lower or middle class driving nice cars, getting new clothes, new plasma tv's and their parents are living in nice new pads. even if usc's athletic department wasn't complicit with all this - and i don't think they were - there had to be lot of hands over the eyes, fingers in the ears to miss what was going on.

Too busy devoting time to academic services.

The punishment that USC should (and needs to) get isn't about competitive advantage, it's about sending a message that athletic departments are responsible for not letting sleazeballs run around giving their supposed-to-be-amateur athletes cars and houses. And to some extent it has to also be about p.r. for the NCAA. A lot of fans and media, like it or not, are looking at this as the NCAA's last chance to pretend that it at least will give a token effort to promote amateurism. And if they come down really light on USC the NCAA will be absolutely vilified.

Seriously, FSU was raked over the coals and the coaches had no idea of what was happening. A rogue tutor was giving answers to tests in the auditorium during the class. There was ZERO chance of a coach being there to know what was going on.

As a result, we lost 14 wins (fair or not, it's not a big deal) and 10 scholarships (just in football). The other sports really hurt, but we're talking football here.

The USC situation is more concerning on some levels, because there were red flags ignored in multiple areas.

The USC fans on here are not going to like this...

Also, I don't think Carroll would have bailed on the perfect coaching job if it was going to be a slap on the wrist

Carroll is gone because USC is hoping for leniency like they got in basketball since Floyd was gone.

That's the key. They accepted the basketball self-imposed but didn't like the football self-imposed penalties.

It's not really the perfect coaching job if the NCAA hammers them is it?

And Carroll was never going to stick around forever. He's not Paterno. He openly talked about how he would only go to the NFL if he had total control. Now he has that on a West Coast city, he's making $2 million more per year, and he gets another shot at the NFL. I doubt whatever's coming down the pike from the NCAA had that much to do with it.
