Happy with ND's class, all things considered. James was a huge get at OT, Nix was crucial at DT, solid QB depth and depth at DB, some goods athletes too. Now Kelly's got to work some magic.

I'll take a top 15 class in the middle of a coaching change every time. And if Kelly can actually coach kids up, this team will be fine.

illinois didn't do too bad for replacing their offensive staff this offseason.

10 3-star and 2 4-star guys. wish we have kept corey cooper but we picked up earnest thomas, who was a ucla commit.

Yeah, I like Thomas. Good get for you guys. It was strange with him - he committed to UCLA without ever visiting.

DE Owamagbe Odighizuwa from Portland is headed to UCLA, picking them over Nebraska and Oregon State. He's ESPN's #2 rated DE and the #8 prospect in the country per Rivals.

And what a great name.

my prediction is that iowa and wisconsin will get recruiting classes that nobody thinks is very good, and then will continue to do better than everyone thinks they should.

Yep.

Iowa probably has their best class since 2005 even though they're ranked 40 by Rivals. Four 4-star guys, four 2-star guys (one is a kicker) and 13 3-star guys. 7 of those 13 have a 5.7 Rivals ranking which is the highest possible 3-star. More importantly than stars they beat out a lot of good schools.

On the topic though, I've never gotten the whole appeal of signing day. At least not since the development of sites like Rivals and Scout. There are a few surprises but over 90% stay with their decision. It's just guys signing a letter and faxing it in.

Demar Dorsey signed with Michigan. Huge get for them.

Yes, very excited about getting Dorsey, especially after we lost out on Sean Parker at the last minute. Rich Rod did a great job getting solid defensive players this class. The last 12 of 13 recruits were all on the defensive side of the ball. Pretty good class considering Michigan's struggles the past 2 years.

The thing I like best about this Iowa recruiting class is that many of these guys were at the top of the coaches board. I trust Kirk's eye for talent more than the guys at Rival and Scout, though I find the star system fun from a fan's perspective.

I got to see CJ play FB at Johnsburg since he was a Soph., he's a real good kid, hell of a pitcher too. If he decided to play baseball his Jun. and senior years he would've been one of the best baseball players in state as well.

Well he's a physical specimen and probably will be playing some role next year. From what I've read he may struggle blocking next year as most true freshman do. But he'll probably slot in as the 2nd or 3rd TE and will be part of the offense next year.

That's to be expected, he's from a real small conference/school out here in the Fox Valley and was often the largest player on the field. I doubt many of the DEs he blocked were over 200LBs compared to the big 10.

The excitement, I think, is getting official word from the already committed players. A kid could be committed for 6 months, but until he signs that LOI, any other school could potentially woo him.

Also, there are still a number of kids who wait til signing day to announce. Take Tennessee, for instance - we got two of our best recruits (Da'Rick Rogers and James Stone) today. Neither had committed beforehand.

Yeah that seems to be more of an SEC trait.

they do get into some fierce bidding wars.

USC, UCLA and even UW landed some studs that hadn't announced before today. So did ND. It's not an SEC trait. It's just not common that those guys end up at Iowa.

I can understand why it's not exciting for an Iowa fan. I'm a big Iowa fan and I ignore most of their recruiting. In part b/c I think Ferentz can coach up just about any team to compete in the Big Ten, but mostly b/c so few great recruits are going there. It's more exciting for the ND fan in me.

Really? There were a number of players not committing to SEC schools who declared today, I thought.

Seantrel Henderson to USC. Wow.

USC always does great on signing day. Figure that's because it usually takes 3 days for checks to clear anyways.

Glad to see UCLA have a great day too the potential Kiffen-Nueheisel rivalry could be fun to watch.

local radio says with OSU losing out on the big 3 OL they were recruiting, that they may enter 2011 with only 9 O-Linemen. Yikes

I love it. They didn't offer 4-star Andrew Donnal from their own backyard (going to Iowa) because they were sure they would get one or more of the big fish.

Hello Fellas.

#2 ranking by Rivals for the Trojans. Not bad, considering all the noise around the program lately.

Raisin - Congrats on UCLA'S #8 ranking. I am one Trojan fan looking forward to the rivalry getting competitive again.

Serious question: how many of you recruits back out if/when sanctions come down in a few weeks?

They signed a LOI, can they still back out? I know under certain circumstances they can but I don't know specifics.
