Hello Fellas.

#2 ranking by Rivals for the Trojans. Not bad, considering all the noise around the program lately.

Raisin - Congrats on UCLA'S #8 ranking. I am one Trojan fan looking forward to the rivalry getting competitive again.

Serious question: how many of you recruits back out if/when sanctions come down in a few weeks?

They signed a LOI, can they still back out? I know under certain circumstances they can but I don't know specifics.

Did they all sign? I heard some were going to verbally commit but wait to see what happened with the sanctions

Oh ok. Looks like there are two verbals that are still unsigned.

Are the two Baxter and Prater? If so, they already enrolled. Kiffin would only accept LOIs.

And Kiffin and Orgeron were insisting to recruits that minimal sanctions would hit so it will be interesting to see the fallout if/when those sanctions are not minimal.

Nah, Morgan and Pullard

Scout has DJ Morgan and Hayes Pullard signed.

Why should there be more than a slap on the wrist? It was all Pete Carroll's fault and he's no longer there.

Seantrel Henderson won't sign his USC NLI yet:

New York Times[/url]"]According to Henderson’s father, Sean, he will wait until U.S.C. appears before an N.C.A.A. infractions committee from Feb. 19-21 to hear about possible sanctions for the program before deciding whether to sign the letter. Though the Trojans are not likely to hear about any possible sanctions at that time, Sean Henderson said the hearing would give the family a sense of where the process was headed.

UCD apparently signed a pretty solid group today. I'm going off the coach's word but he's not one to exaggerate all that often.

FSU with a strong NSD. Top 6 on ESPN, Top 10 on Rivals.

And we lost out on Jeremy Deering, Demar Dorsey, Corey Lemonier, Mack Brown (not a serious possibility), Calvin Smith, and JR Ferguson. This could have been a MONSTER class, and we really only had 1 full month of recruiting without our previous (mostly) useless staff.

Feels good. We have a great staff, good recruits, and a bit of enthusiasm running through the program. Back to the top.

So Boise State only signed 10 players. 10.

...OK

I count 5 seniors on their roster from this past year.

Yeah, they didn't lose anybody. Only one of their starters was a senior.

And I agree with dew. Anyone who starts Boise outside of the top five next year shouldn't be allowed to vote anymore.

You're probably more familiar with Boise than anybody on the board. I was curious on your impressions of the Boise defense the last few years. I've seen them a few times, but haven't watched that closely most of the time. Since we now have their DC, I'm curious what I can expect.

I actually don't know all that much about Boise. The only time I really watched them closely was against UCD and I don't think they ran all that much.

I do know that they've tended to be pretty good at picking off passes, though I'm sure part of that is a product of playing in the WAC. Outside of that, I don't know all that much.

Dew, you guys got a damn good defensive coordinator. He was the guy I wanted UCLA to hire to replace DeWayne Walker last year.

That's not how Rivals ranks their classes. They remove quantity from the equation. I saw the formula recently, and iirc, only about the top 20 or so prospects per class are part of the ranking.

To the best of my knowledge, the actual formula has never been made public.

12 of the 17 letters of intent are in by 8 AM this morning for Northwestern. I'll have nothing to do to kill time at work at this rate.

I saw it with my own two eyes last week. I'll see if I can still find it and I'll bring it over. Seemed like a bit of a redundant formula, but I know that 2* players were not part of the equation, and that only about the top 20 players signed per school were part of it. There were some arbitrary pieces to it (such as receiving a bonus for the #1 player at a position), and some of it seemed superfluous.

From Rivals: (and as you can see, quantity has almost nothing to do with the rankings...)

Please note you only take the top 20 prospects in this formula, ordered by # Stars descending.

POINTS = ((N / (N + 50)) * H) + ((50 / (N + 50)) * L)

where...

H = 250 for each 5-star commit + 140 for each 4-star + 75 for each 3-star + 20 for each 2-star + 10 for each 1-star

L = 18 for each 5-star + 12 for each 4-star + 8 for each 3-star + 3 for each 2-star + 1 for each 1-star

N = a big honkin' calculation, described below

CALCULATION OF N:

10 for each commit on the Rivals 100 (high school) ranked 1-10

9 for each commit on the Rivals 100 (high school) ranked 11-20

etc. down to...

1 for each commit on the Rivals 100 (high school) ranked 91-100

10 for each commit on the Rivals 100 (non-high school) ranked 1-10

9 for each commit on the Rivals 100 (non-high school) ranked 11-20

etc. down to...

6 for each commit on the Rivals 100 (non-high school) ranked 41-50

24 for each commit ranked #1 on his official position ranking

18 for each commit ranked #2-5 on his official position ranking

8 for each commit ranked 6-X on his official position ranking, where X is dependent on detail position, as listed below...

--Dual-threat QB: 25

--Pro-style QB: 25

--Running Back: 35

--All-Purpose Back: 15

--Fullback: 15

--Wide Receiver: 50

--Tight End: 20

--Offensive Tackle: 40

--Offensive Guard: 30

--Offensive Center: 10

--Defensive Tackle: 50

--Weakside Defensive End: 20

--Strongside Defensive End: 30

--Inside Linebacker: 35

--Outside Linebacker: 35

--Cornerback: 40

--Safety: 30

--Athlete: 25

--Kicker: (no points awarded for rank lower than 5th)

If the team's average stars are greater than 3, add (100 * (Avg stars -> 3)) to N.

LSU by all accounts had a top ten class. It wasn't as strong as I would like, but with Louisiana's crop rated lower than usual, it's not surprising.

LSU had a good NSD. I believe they picked up all of these guys who weren't previously commited to LSU yesterday:

4* WR Kadron Boone

4* ATH Jarrett Fobbs

4* DE JC Copeland

4* DE JR Ferguson

3* LB Luke Muncie

Posted

Penn State's highlights:

4* QB Robert Bolden

4* LB Khairi Fortt

4* LB Mike Hull

4* RB Silas Redd

4* ATH Alex Kenney

4* OL Thomas Ricketts

4* DE Dakota Royer

also qb paul jones... scout had him rated higher and he has already enrolled, so there's a decent chance he'll be the backup as a true freshman (unless they really like the walk-on who's currently backup). they got some nice recruits at D line, center and TE, which they all needed... their depth at DT is thin though.

people on the message boards were griping yesterday because a couple of the real highly-regarded guys (lattimore, floyd) didn't pick psu, but this recruiting class got 2 very good qb's and was ranked by pretty much everyone as the best one in the big ten, and around #10 in the country. that's fine.

Huh, for some reason I was thinking you followed them a bit. Sorry then.

Thanks Raisin. I hadn't heard of him before it became apparent he'd be the DC, but I haven't heard a bad review of him yet. I'm kind of curious about the idea of going to a 3-4, but I don't believe Boise ran one under Wilcox.
