If he's coaching in AAA next year it obviously means he will be ready to coach in the bigs by 2011. I have to imagine this will only give the idiots more fuel for next year if we start slow/hit a rough patch to throw out Lou. We have at least one guy already with the ML club that is a better head coaching candidate to take over for Lou when he leaves and that's Trammell and I think Jaramillo and Rotschild aren't far off from being as qualified, if not more, than Sandberg.

I think most people would like to see Trammell given a shot after Lou leaves. Sandberg needs to pay his dues as a Major League coach before becoming a manager. Let Trammell manage and have Sanberg be the 3rd base coach or bench coach.

I don't want Sandberg anywhere near the Chicago Cubs coaching in any capacity. Let him find another organization to coach for.

I could not have said it any better myself.

I wonder if he'll hit 20 ejections this year.

Never figured a guy like Sandberg to be firey. He always seemed pretty laid-back as a player.

He's doing it because he's trying to be more managerly

Why are we supposed to hate Sandberg, again?

His well publicized mockery of the use of advanced metrics in decision making, and strict adherence to small-ball philosophies that are more likely to cost our team runs (and wins) than gain any.

His knowledge of the game makes him seem like he'd be a wonderful coach, but he shouldn't be allowed to make any decisions about strategy or personnel.

I hate Ryne Sandberg. The minor leagues are supposed to be about the young kids. Helping the kids become major leaguers. He's only out for himself, just like he always was. All he ever cared about was winning - winning - winning. A real LOSER off-the-field too. No wonder he's headed for a second DIV...

IT'S NICE TO BE IMPORTANT, BUT MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE.

I hear ya. Trammell seems like a good option. I wouldn't mind seeing if Dave Duncan wanted to try the managing gig either.

That's got "Peter Principle" written all over it.

Can anyone post quotes from Sandberg where he is clearly against SABR or Advanced metrics? I know he is big on bunting, with every batter in the lineup which I dont like. But, is there anything else?

Also has Trammel had quotes where he was clearly in support of Advanced metrics?

What coaches around the league have clear positions on this whether it be against or for?

I think I heard Freddi Gonzalez before as a big SABR guy? I know Theo Epstein as a GM is a big SABR guy right?

i would imagine that there is a larger gap in managing in the minors vs. the majors than there is in actually playing in the minors vs. the majors.

It would be conceivable that a manager would make different decisions based upon lessons needing to be learned in the minors vs. what is best for the win. The Minors are about learning, not winning.

This is true, and it makes the case that Sandberg would be a terrible manager even stronger. He bunts way too much with everyone, you want players learning to hit, not sacrificing a runner over in the first inning because you misguidedly think it will give you a better shot at scoring/winning. Everything from his HOF speech to his Yahoo columns, to his quotations, to his managerial decisions(including being the biggest hothead in professional baseball) all point to him being a manager who would make very bad decisions with alarming regularity. The only reason anyone would think otherwise is because Sandberg was good at playing the game, which isn't nearly the same as running one.

The groundswell of pro-sandberg-in-'11-types amongst average cubs fans, at least here in peoria, is overwhelming. "oh, he's such a class act," "oh, they are sure grooming ol' ryno for the job," and "boy oh boy that'd be great, he'd straighten out some of those guys up there"... ITS GONNA HAPPEN
