The Cubs are at a choice point. Spend big (dollars and prospects) to make a run or let things play out. It appears to me that they are going to let things play out. Crazy things always happen in baseball but I can't see them contending next year if they stay on the current course.

I could see them contending, I just think they are doing a horrible job of maximizing their odds.

Agreed. Unless the Cards return everyone (unlikely), the Cubs will likely contend in 2010, even if they do nothing from here till spring training. In fact, doing nothing else might be the preferred route, judging by what Hendry has done so far.

Depends on what you mean by nothing. Letting Harden walk and dumping Bradley leaves significant holes.

I was mostly being facetious, but if Hendry's something is allocating more millions to the bullpen, I'm not sure. I don't like losing Harden, but I think we can live with it. Not getting draft picks is what hurts. As for Bradley, I'd just as soon keep him, but that's not going to happen. If he is replaced by someone like Mike Cameron, I think the team will be all right, at least relatively speaking.

If nothing else, if Hendry continues to screw the pooch, we might be rid of him after the upcoming season.

Per MLBTradeRumors

The Chicago Cubs are interested in Curtis Granderson, but would prefer to move Milton Bradley before aggressively pursuing Granderson, according to Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune.

Earlier today, we heard that talks of a Bradley-Pat Burrell swap are still alive. If the Cubs were to deal Bradley and acquire Granderson, it would allow them to play Granderson in center field and move Kosuke Fukudome to right (Bradley's position).

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Rogers indicates that the Tigers are seeking multiple major-league-ready players in any trade for Granderson or right-hander Edwin Jackson. The Cubs also seem unwilling to part with top prospect Starlin Castro in order to acquire Granderson, so it remains to be seen if they have the chips to complete a deal.

Rogers expects Bradley and Granderson talks to heat up during or before next week's winter meetings.

Yup, sure looks like weve got this years Roberts/Peavy.

I agree. The title of this thread should be Roberts/Peavy/Granderson - The Tradition Continues.

Bets on how many pages this one gets up to?

Am I the only one that doesn't really have too much interest in Granderson?

Im interested in him, but not if Castro or Vitters are necessary to make the trade work. Id also rather keep Cashner and Jackson, but if one of them are needed to make the deal, Id be OK with it. Detroit reportedly want major league ready players. Between Fox, Fuld, Colvin, Marshall, Gorzalanny, Samardzjia, and StevensI really think we can make something happen, and wed also probably have to kick them a solid prospect like Burke, Lee, Carpenter, Castillo, Archer, or Dolis.

It all depends how long before it starts getting way off topic and filled with random arguements and the powers that be decide its time to shut it down.

I don't think there is much of a chance the Cubs can get Granderson without giving up any of Castro/Vitters/Cashner/Jackson .

I'm not interested in this at all, and if Hendry does get Granderson, he will have dramatically overpaid for Granderson while at the same time got taken to the cleaners on Bradley.

Can we just fire Hendry already and stop this nonsense?

Grandersons decent, but fairly expensive, and the Tigers want to cut costs. Id offer:

Jake Fox

1 of Fuld or Colvin

1 of Gorzalanny/Marshall/Shark

any 1 prospect besides Vitters, Castro, Jackson, or Cashner

Thats a major league ready platoon or 4th outfielder, a DH, a #4 or 5 starter and solid prospect. If they accept, good. if not, we move on.

This is bat [expletive] crazy.

If Fox can learn to hit a slider, he can be a quailty major league DH. He must offer Jobu rum.

That's a pretty big IF.

He's a solid power bat off the bench that can fill in at the corners every now and then.

Then we move on and Jim Hendry does what Jim Hendry does best and throw money at Mike Cameron.

How often does Hendry way overpay in trades? Pierre's the only major one I can think of. He's good at trades, it's free agency he's bad at.

The only way he's getting Granderson is if he is willing to overpay. Detroit is not going to just give him way. They view Granderson as a guy still in his prime, fairly inexpensive, plays one of the toughest positions on the field, hits from the left side of the plate and does it pretty well. Besides all that, other teams are going to be interested in Granderson. The market for him will require that someone overpay if they want him. Detroit basically announced to the world "here is Granderson if you want him". And if someone is willing to pay Detroit's price, they can probably have him.

The only way Granderson goes to the Cubs is if some of the Cubs best young players/prospects are wearing Tiger uniforms in 2010.

Personally, I don't think Granderson is a difference maker when stacking up his abilities with the rest of the team.

One thing that's been mostly glossed over is that next to maybe Verlander and Cabrera, Granderson is the closest the Tigers have to a marquee, face-of-the-franchise type of guy. They're not going to give away a fan favorite for a bunch of guys nobody in Detroit's ever heard of.

Now I'm sure the cavalry will be along to explain how ridiculous this all sounds and how none of this junk matters, but let's keep in mind that teams are keen on attracting fans and selling tickets in addition to winning ballgames. Folks here may have maximizing on-field performance as the singular goal, but the reality is actual front office types have to think more broadly than that.
