If its really true that Keith Law left Carpenter off his Cy Young ballot, he needs his voting rights revoked. Javier Vazquez 2nd? Come on. Also Will Carrol left Carpenter off his ballot and voted Haren 3rd wtf.

i think you should look at vazquez's numbers

And Haren's, for that matter.

And I think you guys need to look at Carpenters numbers, for that matter.

So Vazquez has better strikeout numbers and better WAR, and that makes his season better than Carp?

Better strikeout and walk rate, nearly identical FIP, and did it over nearly 30 more innings than Carpenter. I think that does make his season better.

If you read up, you may notice neither of us whining that Carpenter didn't deserve to be on anyone's ballot.

Carpenter had a higher pitching VORP than Haren/Vazquez, Haren/Vazquez had better K rates, better PRC, and didn't benefit as much from his defense as Carpenter. Carpenter did have a better HR rate, though.

Nobody's saying Carp didn't deserve support, but Vazquez and Haren had just as much business being on a Cy Young ballot as Carp/Wainwright. This could just be the first year when some BBWAA voters looked beyond wins and ERA to determine their votes.

revoke their voting rights.

I thought it was funny when I saw a little Timmy K breakdown of Greinke winning and he seemed to put a lot of effort into justifying Greinke winning despite such a low win total. Like he was embarrassed because he supported a guy that didn't win 20.

and then some local NY news guy went on a little bit about how many fewer complete games this year's winners had than the winners from the 60's. I can't believe that is a story.

Wow, if anyone saw Espn's Keith Law's Cy Young voting, you noticed that Vazquez was number two on his list. In his chat thats ongoing right now, a lot of Cardinals fans are going after him for it. Pretty me much saying he knows nothing about baseball, etc, etc. Whats funny to me is that it shows how dumb some fans can be, a couple of guys said things like "Well Carpenter had a better W-L and thats all that counts and is the most important stat", Another one said "All you look at is strikeouts" despite the fact that Keith outlined all the stats he looked at. Some people can be idiots when it comes to this stuff. Carpenter no doubt had a better season but i think Vazquez had better numbers and i feel most people are discrediting Vazquez because he hadn't posted up a similar season in a while.

Twins catcher Joe Mauer was named the American League MVP today, according to a team press release. It's hard to find fault with that choice; it'll be more interesting to look at the rest of the ballots.

The Minnesota Twins star received 27 of 28 first-place votes and 387 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Oh, if only the Twins could have afforded Prior....

Wed have probably ended up with Dewon Brazelton or Colt Griffin and 2003 might not have happened. Steve Bartman would be at home quietly enjoying his headphones and turtleneck.

Pujols wins NL MVP: No shocker

DLee finished ninth.: Not a huge shocker

And Jeremy Affeldt got a vote.....:Thats an odd choice, but I didnt realize how good of a season he had. Werent we considering him last off season? Good thing we spent that money on Aaron Miles and Joey Gathright instead./quote]

I had a buddy who's a Cardinals fan say that someone who made zero post season starts should not get the Cy Young in defense of saying Wainwright and Carpenter got screwed. I pointed out that Bob Gibson would probably need one of his Cy Youngs taken away then.

2003? What happened in 2003? Something of significance?

And who is this Bartman fellow?

In the book Cubs Nation, Gene Wojciechowski spends a day interviewing the Cubs' draft team and they tell him that we'd have taken Mauer if Prior was gone.

if prior went first then the next pick had to be either mauer or teixeira or mauer... couldn't go wrong with either one, really. brazelton went ahead of tex because the d-rays were cheap and floyd went ahead of him because the phillies didn't feel like dealing with boras after the j.d. drew fiasco.

Liars. Mauer was signed as a high school catcher out of Minnesota. Minnesota did the same thing with Mauer as San Diego did with Matt Bush. They went with the best high school talent out of their own neck of the woods for cheap and smooth signability reasons.

The Cubs would not have selected Mauer. Even if they did, their inability to groom a single hitter in their entire minor league organization during that era probably would have seen Mauer flame out in Single A a year or two after his signing.

It's real easy to say that's what they would have done if Prior wasn't there, though. Heck, I remember reading articles long before that draft about how enamored the Cubs were with Teixeira.

Oh wait, we had Chris Stynes at 3rd base. Surely, they wouldn't want or need a practically major league ready 3b instead of a high school catcher.
