I don't think the rankings SHOULD be "who beat who", but instead an attempt at an objective list of who is better than who. Not to sound like Meph here, but Houston beating Oklahoma State doesn't mean they're better

You're sounding like Meph. There's no plausible reason how Oklahoma State should be ahead of Houston in the polls.

They were better on that given day and that's all that matters.

The best option here is to just not have polls until week 5-6 or so.

Agreed. Didn't the AP do that for a couple of years before this year? Not like it really mattered because they just used the coaches poll for a guideline.

There should definitely not be any polls up until mid-October.

No, it's the BCS standings that doesn't start until later in the season. The AP poll has always been weekly from preseason on.

I know the BCS polls are always later but I could've sworn the AP poll didn't come out until around week 4 or 5 for the last two seasons.

Nope, they've started in the preseason just like always.

The Harris poll is the one that waits for week 4-6 to do their first poll (the poll that replaced the AP poll as part of the BCS rankings). That's probably the one you were thinking of.

last year, a 9-0 Penn State team lost to a 5-4 Iowa team. Should Iowa have been ranked higher than PSU after that game?

Houston did have 4 losses, so I see your point.

Half the teams don't play anybody until then. We'd basically end up with the preseason preview magazine polls restated, minus any team that gets upset.

Yeah, and I'm sure there would be many voters who had their own poll (or used the coaches poll) and adjusted it each week instead of assessing after 5-6 weeks. But at least waiting to release the polls would give the illusion that it's a bit more accurate.

While I think that's the best way, I don't think there's a good way to run a sport based off of subjective opinions.

Well, they used to run the BCS mostly off statistical analysis, but people's subjective opinions had their feelings hurt.

I'd probably prefer the BCS not include any human polls. At the same time, though, I'm not a fan of the BCS either.

No...

Houston beat Oklahoma State in the second week of the season and they're 2-0. Why shouldn't they be ahead of Ok St?

if usc makes it to the title game, i'll eat my words. i just don't trust a team with a true freshman QB (who got outplayed by Navy's QB at Ohio State) and a pretty tough schedule.

And for all of the HE ENGINEERED A GAME-WINNING DRIVE talk, all he did was let the incredibly underrated McKnight gash ohio state for 89 yards.

I think the polls should be a mixture of results and general opinion of team skill. For instance USC has a big win and thus going solely off of results they should be No. 1 but most people would agree that Florida is the best team as of now. USC did beat OSU but Barkley wasn't all that impressive and against a Florida I wouldn't be expecting much.

As far as Houston/OK St goes I would still put OK State ahead of Houston. I think OK State is a lot better than they played and had an off day. Pair that with Houston having a very good game plan and you get Houston winning. Despite the result I would say OK State is still a better team with a lot more skill.

People think the polls should represent different things. That goes for the people who vote as well. Some vote off of results some vote off of their opinion. This is the main reason IMO that the polls tend to be screwed up.

Yep, first year QBs don't win titles.

Good read. I dont think it even mentioned the obvious. On 4th and goal from the 1 USC mans up and scores a TD....OSU kicks a FG(losing all momemtum)

Kicking a FG from the 1 is almost always the wrong decision.
