Hmm. Interesting. Heilman can obviously go. I'd interested in finding out what we can get for Harden.

Here's the article by the way for anyone who's interested.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9993146/Sources:-Cubs'-Harden,-Heilman-claimed

If the Cubs want to point toward the future, this is their chance.

Right-handed starter Rich Harden and right-handed reliever Aaron Heilman have been claimed on waivers, according to major-league sources.

A National League team was awarded the claim on Heilman, one source said. The claiming team on Harden is not known, but presumably he did not get through the NL, either. Players must pass through their own league first before being exposed on waivers to teams in the other league.

The Cubs will have until Monday afternoon to work out trades, allow Harden and Heilman to depart on claims or pull them back them from waivers.

Interesting. I'd let mayo go and bring Stevens back up to take his place and get a better feel for how much he can contribute next season.

Harden would have to bring a very significant return for me to trade him. Because he's likely to get us two first rounders if we hang onto him - or be a key part of 2010 & beyond.

If they trade Harden, does it have to be somebody who is not on a 40-man roster or somebody else who has passed through waivers?

Yeah, it'd have to be players either off the 40 man roster or who have already passed through waivers. High-end A or AA players might be the best bet at this point in the year. I'd say most top prospects in AAA are already rostered.

However, I think they could do a Harden for 2-3 PTBNLs and announce the guys after the season. I think then they could get guys on 40 man rosters.

IIRC, yes. Although they can designate a 40 man player as a PTBNL and then complete the trade after the season when the waivers don't apply (that's assuming the player on the 40 man is in the minors or in the AL..if he is in the NL, that workaround cannot be used).

That seems quite shady.

And I forgot to add that I'd for somebody else to pick up the highly mediocre easy to predict failure that is Heilman.

The only reason not to trade Heilman is so that Stevens, Caridad or Berg can pitch during the minor league playoffs.

Any guesses as to who the team is? I'm going with the Dodgers. Their pen has logged a lot of innings.

The only way they better trade Harden is if they are getting a very good return, if its not, then take the picks or re-sign him. Heilman should have been off the team awhile ago.

Obviously, the 'between the lines' on this is that Milton Bradley went unclaimed...!

Where does it say that Bradley was put on waivers or that Harden and Heilman were the only 2 that were claimed?

"even more"?

The last two or three drafts have helped the farm system greatly. Add in the very intriguing international signings and the farm system has gotten quite a bit deeper over the past couple of years.
