Good thing we didn't trade Heilman. Can't let talent like that slip through your fingers.

But really, what was the point of keeping him, especially since all Hendry had to do was let him go? Absolutely no point in having him around.

There really isn't that much difference either way. They could have saved a relatively small amount of money if they had let him go. There is no roster spot involved here as the team is going to expand to 40 tomorrow anyway, and the Cubs aren't likely to need yet another 40 man spot for the next month.

It's keeping an extra arm for the month of September and a chance that the Cubs would want Heilman on their playoff roster if they somehow made it and he pitched well in September (both big ifs even with Heilman pitching better lately).

So there is only a tiny potential benefit to keeping him for September, but if the Giants weren't offering anything there really isn't any risk either.

I know what Rosenthal says should be taken with a grain of salt, but he was on The Score this morning talking about the Harden situation, and says that he doesnt think that the Cubs have any interest in resigning Harden long term and maybe not offer him arbitration.

The way I interpret that is that Rosenthal is stated that as an opinion rather then basing it off quotes from sources. I have a hard time believing that a major league team would let an ar like Harden go for nothing. And seeing as the Cubs didn't trade Harden today, it leads me to believe they will try to re-sign Rich in the offseason.

As for why Hendry can let go of one of his pet projects in Heilman, I have no clue. I'm not surprise, but like Miles, Heilman is an Aaron that doesn't belong on the Cubs.

"It was the biggest non-story of that big of magnitude," Hendry said. "We always run everyone through what we call 'trade waivers.' Everyone in Major League Baseball usually runs their whole team through in August. We had 12 people claimed over the course of the month, and for whatever reason, two names (Harden and Aaron Heilman) were made public.

"It's not something I would ever discuss- possible trades, or were we close, or names here or there. But I can tell you, we never really gave it any substantive thought, because we certainly would never give up unless we were out of it. If we were 15 back, obviously you might have looked at things a little differently with other people who were never mentioned in the press.

"It's just the way the world is now. So of the 12 that were claimed, two were stories and 10 had the same results as those two."

If we could get something like Hicks and Hunt from the Twins, I may be OK for trading him. But I doubt the Twins make a deal like that and therefore I see no reason to deal him. At worst, we offer arby, let him walk and take the picks.

Shooter Hunt

Even as a throw-in, I'd have second thoughts.

Wow, I didn't realize how badly he tanked this year. Oh well, deal didn't happen anyway.

Im very curious to hear who the other 10 were. If they said that only Harden and heilman were "stories" than who the hell were the others? Gregg? Grabow? Miles??? If someone claimed Miles, and Hendry didnt hand him over with a pink bow on his head, that just sucks.

The point is that Harden and Heilman getting claimed wasn't really a story either... waivers aren't really a worthy news item 99.98% of the time.

Probably guys like Gregg,Grabow, Marshall,Lee, Ramirez, Lilly, Guzman, Marmol, Wells, Theriot, Fox, Fontenot, Baker and other guys who are cheap or are good players with not alot of years on their contracts left. I doubt anybody claimed Miles with how horrible he's hit this year, or anybody claimed Soriano or Bradley with how poorly they played this year with alot of money left on their contracts.

Gift wrapped with a complementary box of fine cigars would be the way to go.

I'm confident that nobody would claim A. Miles.
