A .391 OPS so far for Syracuse. $1600/mo. in MiLB.

Couldn't he make more money marketing himself as a former Cub and selling cars? It's very difficult to imagine any scenario that would allow him another major-league AB.

There were some big Corey fans here, but this guy is done.

When your whole life has been about playing baseball, its not easy to call it quits. He'll play until he hits rock bottom and begins to discover that he can do more in his life than play baseball.

Is he still dating Dusty Baker's daughter? If so he has a very easy way to get himself into more money.

According to baseball reference, He made about 14 mil between '02-'08, so unless hes an idiot, he should be set in that department.

he's only 29. if somebody wants to keep paying him, why wouldn't he want to keep playing?

i wish i was a minor league baseball player. even if i had no shot at making the majors.

Well after taxes its probably like 9,000,000 made. If he lives to 85 years old and hasn't spent a dime of that 9M to this point, he would have $160,000 to spend a year. A fairly modest lifestyle for someone who is currently a millionare.

Do you think he has the money stuffed into a mattress? He's making interest on the cash, you can bet.

I thought of that...but I also figured that he's spent a significant portion of his money already. The point was, $14 million isn't a crapload to last for a lifetime. Considering he likely hedged all his bets on baseball, these will probably be the last years of his life that he has a shot to make 500k-1M a year so might as well keep working at it and hope someone else gives him a shot.

Nah. He put it all in GM stock about a year ago.

I know. I'd love to have been able to play in the minors for a few years. Or a cup of coffee in an NFL training camp.

But -- 29, he's exiting his prime years, and those years weren't all that special to begin with.

I guess it just depends on what he wants to do.

The wunderkind so many wanted up here with his "five tools." I just hope one of them is a framing hammer or a college degree

From most all reports, Corey is a genuinely nice guy. But feel free to be bitter and trash him for a joke.

A really bad one.

It's a shame. He just never panned out. His K/BB ratio never helped.

He would have been useful if he had just learned to lay off of those eyes-high fastballs.

I still think Don Baylor is largely to blame. He wasn't ready for the major leagues in 2001, but since the Cubs were unexpected contenders that year Baylor pushed for him to be called up so he could be used as a pinch runner instead of continuing his development. MacPhail is equally to blame, because he could have said no to Baylor.

That and he was drafted and developed to be a bit of a slugger, but then when he reached the majors coaches said he should turn into a bunting/slapping leadoff hitter. There probably couldn't have been a worse team for him to enter the majors on than the late 90s/early 00s Cubs. There was never a chance they were ever going to fix his most glaring weakness.

Considering all of the guys that find ways to stick in the league he should be able to as well at least as a defensive replacement/pinch runner type of role.

Yeah it didn't help that once he got to upper levels in the minors and to the majors they always seemed to be trying to change his approach at the plate, first it was to become a power hitter 3-4-5 hitter, then it was to be a 1-2 hitter and be a speedy on base guy, then it was back to a power hitter, and then again back to being more of a "lead-off" guy.

I didn't realize that he was actually pretty good from 03-04 he posted a line of .298/.329/.511 13HR and 55RBI in only 347 PA in 03', and in 04' he put up .266/.320/.452 24HR 72RBI 32SB in 687 AB's. He could have been at least an acceptable platoon guy with those numbers at minimum. Did he blow out his knee in 03? I know he catches a lot of heat but those 03-04 numbers aren't terrible and he probably would have improved his OBP with more time had he been able to sustain his offensive success.
