I'm not much of basketball fan but Memphis and Calipari are getting a raw deal here.

The NCAA cleared Rose, twice. When Memphis found out that a grade was changed on his transcripts they reported it to the NCAA.

Calipari was kind of a dick, but that doesn't mean he did anything wrong, at least at Memphis

I kinda agree with this. I really don't get the difference between this and the Darrell Arthur spot. Did the NCAA prove Memphis knew about the SAT? Cause in both cases it seems like the NCAA Clearinghouse approved the kids?

I'm not going to act like Cal was running a completely clean program because that's likely not the case. But this whole Rose thing is pretty ridiculous. I don't know what else Memphis or any program is supposed to do. The guy was cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse. Are programs now supposed to dig deeper to clear players on their own?

What's UMass supposed to do? The NCAA cleared Marcus Camby to play even though he was getting paid! What are they supposed to do, stop their players from getting paid on their own?

What's Michigan supposed to do? The NCAA cleared Chris Webber to play even though he was getting paid!! What are they supposed to do stop their players from getting paid on their own?

What's Georgia supposed to do? The NCAA allowed the kids to take those fake classes and be eligible! What are they supposed to do make their players take real classes on their own?

What's Washington football supposed to do? The NCAA allowed Jeramy Stevens to play even though he raped that girl! What are they supposed to do stop their players from raping girls on their own??

This post make you look like an ass.

Here's how it works. The NCAA has to clear each and every Div I athlete who as an incoming freshman. It is then up to the university to set whatever standards they want. As far as the Rose situation goes. he took the SAT and didn't make the scores. Both the NCAA and Memphis told him he would be ineligible. He took it again and passed. The NCAA cleared him. Memphis found out a high school grade was changed before he entered school. They reported it to the NCAA and the NCAA cleared him again.

Memphis isn't Harvard and no one here thought that Rose was ever going to stay more than one year.

Whether a school is willfully ignorant while a student is enrolled at the school, or willfully ignorant in order to get him enrolled at the school, it really doesn't matter.

This wasn't Rose taking the test once, not getting his scores, realizing he needs to get his act together to be eligible and that's it.

This was Rose failing to reach the scores 3 times. This was Rose then travelling to Detroit(home of friend of the program worldwide wes) to take the SAT. You don't think Calipari knew exactly what was going on? He just thought Derrick would be more comfortable taking the test in Detroit? Away from all the pressure of Chicago? He just thought Derrick flipped the switch the 4th time around, and took the test seriously? You think Memphis's compliance department saw this as standard operating procedure? Detroit's where most kids go to get a boost in their scores?

With Calipari's history, Memphis held their nose and said let's go for it. It bit them in the ass and now they're pleading ignorance. If they weren't willfully ignorant, then they were accidentally stupid.

BTW, it's my understanding that the NCAA has yet to find any proof that Rose did not take his SAT. This whole thing started because the Educational Testing Service cancelled Rose's SAT score. The ETS cancelled Rose's test score not because they found proof that he didn't take the test. They cancelled it because they sent letters to Rose's home in Chicago questioning his test scores and he never responded. The ETS stated "failure to cooperate" in why the scores were cancelled. Also the test was cancelled deeming Rose ineligible after the season was completed. There's not much linking the University of Memphis or Calipari for that matter to any wrong doing.

Rose and his family were in Detroit on vacation attending the Bulls/Pistons playoff game. This was discovered duing his initial eligibility process.

And people tend to take SATs(and definitely improve upon them) while on vacation.

Yea of course. And its just a coincidence that they were on vacation to Detroit(since when is this a vacation spot?) where worldwide Wes is from. Completely coincidence.

Well when you have less than a month to go before you enroll at college you probably take the test whenever you have an available day. There's no proof he didn't take the test.

Is it really hard to believe that a kid from Chicago would travel to Detroit to watch a Detroit/Chicago playoff game?

You have to register for the SAT's a month before the test. He wouldn't have known that there was going to be a playoff game there when he picked his site for the test.

Even if he was able to change his site last minute (which I really don't think you can do)..do you really think he would take the time to change the site and make it a bad environment for trying to concentrate on the test that he badly needed just to go watch a playoff game? That's rather far-fetched.

Edit: I found out. You can change the site with an additional fee no later than 2 1/2 weeks before the test date. The playoff schedule would still not have been set by this time. You can also try to plead your case for a later change if you go into the test center the day of, but I really doubt the "I went on vacation to watch a playoff game" would be an acceptable reason in order for him to take the test at a different site.

I agree. And I'm not sure how I started defending Rose in this thread? I would not be surprsied at all if he didn't take the test. I just have issue with the NCAA clearing him to play and then unclearing him after the season then punishing the University.

Isiah and FIU are not happy with the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament because they thought they were going to play Ohio State in the opener but are playing North Carolina. Hard to say who is really at fault, but if the AD did sign a contract stating they would play OSU or North Carolina then he should be the one to blame.

Anyways they are threatening to pull out though that doesn't make any sense either.

Great message to send to his players: "We can't play UNC! Nooooooo!!!! "

isiah Thomas is a [expletive] ass. How he continues to get jobs is beyond me.

Ball State announced its schedule recently. Nothing really notable except for a trip to Purdue in December and the usual game with Butler, who we haven't beaten since I arrived as an undergrad (at home this year).

We'll also be taking on soccer10k's UC-Davis team in Muncie this year.

I bet he'll recruit very well, and then it'll end in a bad way. Thomas might get out before the hammer comes down, but he'll definitely attain pariah status. (moreso)

Snood, have you seen Bill's beard? Pretty solid. I doubt he keeps it though.

I saw one video where it's coming in, but it's not quite at beard status.

Too bad he can't get that same coverage on top of his head.

Any good coach would tell the AD they want to play because he doesn't want his players doubting themselves. Why wouldn't they want to play UNC? More people are likely to watch and a win makes you a national story for a week. You beat Ohio State and it will likely be mentioned on Sportscenter but it won't be talked about everywhere.

Thomas said he was completely caught off-guard by the switch.

"I had no idea," he said. "No one contacted me, our athletic director, no one. Maybe in 2010, 2011 we can play North Carolina, but not this year."

It's gone already. Dangit Bill, that would have been awesome.

The Chicago Invitational Tournament has been moved from the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates to the UIC Pavilion. Last I heard, the Sears Centre was having major financial problems, but it was thought that the CIT would still take place there.

This means an NU/ND matchup the night after Thanksgiving at UIC Pavilion. MUCH better than having to drive out to Hoffman Estates, especially since I've never been inside the UIC Pavilion before.

Ryan Hare was arrested over the weekend for battery. He put a guy in the hospital after he found out that his girlfriend was cheating on him. Pretty brutal considering he looked real good at the end of his freshman year last season and he was supposed to have a major role on this year's team.

As if our basketball program needed any of this after the last couple of years. He was suspended indefinitely, but we'll see how long that actually is.
