Kevin Gregg. He's brutal.

He's really not, but ok.

See what you say in June when he's blown three or four saves.

I'd rather have Ceda on the roster.

So the fact that you'd rather have Ceda on the roster is justification for saying he's brutal?

He's not.

Your made up hypothetical isn't really much support for your case either.

No I made my point on the number of walks/9 innings Gregg has had over the last two years and the number blown saves that Gregg has amassed in his short time as a closer.

Also, I don't need any support, this thread is about small sample size, but whatever, he sucks.

You didn't say anything about walks or his blown saves during his time as a closer. You threw out a hypothetical about his blown saves by June. I named Wood because he was a very good closer for us last year, and was in the same situation as "brutal" Kevin Gregg was in your hypothetical.

Gregg may be good, and Gregg may be bad. But if he has 4 blown saves by June, it doesn't mean squat. And that was the point of my post.

EDIT: Oops, didn't quote the right one. Meant to quote your reply to my post...oh well.

You don't think blown saves is a good measure of the guy whose supposed to be saving games for the team? It's not the same thing as a win.

You can get a blown save if you come into a bases loaded no out situation and get three straight outs. It's a measure, but it's not all that good. Sometimes good relief pitchers blow a fair chunk of saves. Brad Lidge blew a bunch one year and was a great closer the very next year on a world series champ, with very similar numbers each season. That said, Gregg isn't very good. He's probably going to piss off Cubs fans a lot this year.

Pissing off Cubs fans is dead easy if you play for the Cubs.

Then why can't Soto or Marmol figure it out?

Marmol has found ways of doing it in the past. Such as giving up homers to ray freaking durham.

or blowing like an eleventy run lead in Harden's first start

If you don't like walks, I don't know if you'd want Ceda on the roster

So he was a better closer in his good year, because he got the saves regardless of the situation -- even though the numbers were similar.

worried about having 2 of the team's 3 worst hitters hitting 2 and 3 in the lineup. Granted Lee isn't horrible, but Fontenot should out OPS him this year. That being said, I'd take Derrek Lee as the 6th best hitter on my team 100 times out of 100.

I don't care about lineup order all that much, but if it were up to me (with the caveat that we still had to stick with Sori at leadoff to keep it realistic), I'd go...

Sori, Fontenot, Aramis, Bradley, Soto, Lee, Fuku, Theriot

I worry about what goes on in Lou's mind. Batting Theriot 2nd and Fontenot last 8th? I mean wth; I also worry about Fukudome, but I started worrying about him way before the season started.

Theriot is a lot better than Fontenot against left-handers which is why he got the 2 spot and Fontenot was moved down to 8th against one:

Theriot career against left-handers: .303/.395/.422

Fontenot career against left-handers: .247/.313/.370

It was a big step for Lou to put Fontenot in the lineup at all against a left-hander. He certainly shouldn't put him any higher than 8th against one (or maybe 7th if Hill is playing).

I really hope Lou never brings Gregg in again w/RISP or just with runners on. It's pretty clear to me he doesn't have the stuff to come and strike 2-3 guys out with guys on, he's going to give up hits/BB. I am fine with Gregg being closer, but he needs to come in fresh to start an inning in order to be successful IMO, he needs to be able to have the wiggle room to give up a hit or BB because his stuff isn't lights out.

Exactly. Situations like this were why we were better off using Gregg as the closer and having Marmol continue in his role.

I understand taking it easy on Marmol's arm, and that's what we all want, but I'm going to go nuts when Lou bring Marmol in with a 5 run lead or something. Just ass backwards bullpen management.

If there's something at all wrong with him, totally different story, obviously.

Fukudome...I want Jim Edmonds back.

This time last year I NEVER thought I'd have heard a Cubs fan say that.

Also: I'm worried about not having the versatility that DeRosa gave us, and I'm going to miss the 9th inning dominance of Kerry Wood. And, I fear Bradley may be in "justify the contract" mode and pressing. I just hope the fans don't get on him too much or he'll flip out and then we're really in trouble.

Oh, and next year the Fukudome contract is going to be a horrible albatross. We'll either have to eat it in a trade, do a garbage for garbage trade like the Hundley for Grudz and Karros trade ended up being (although we got really lucky there), or we'll have to trade a really good young prospect to whoever takes him so they'll eat most of that contract.

No matter what, it's not going to end well.

Or, you know, he could actually rebound and have a decent year. Or is that already completely out of the realm of possibility after playing one whole game?

Oh ok, I didn't know that. Fair point.

I'm worried that the excitement about Fuku, Riot, and Fontenot is premature and that, by June, we're really going to wish we had better options available. Like Mark DeRosa.
