Not only has the light-hitting economy affected the sale of the Cubs and the payroll of the White Sox, it is now getting into hallowed territory — the ivy-covered walls of Wrigley Field.

The Cubs sued apparel maker Under Armour in federal court Thursday for allegedly reneging on a five-year, $10.8 million sponsorship contract to have its logo displayed on the outfield doors in left- and right-center fields.

When the deal was announced two years ago, traditionalists cringed. They believed signs would lead to more advertising encroachment at Wrigley, which already featured a rotating billboard behind home plate. The Cubs argued the extra income would keep Wrigley Field alive and functioning.

The 7-foot-by-12 foot signs were the first ever allowed on the outfield doors and seemed appropriate at the time because new left fielder Alfonso Soriano was a spokesman for the company. Soriano signed an eight-year, $136 million contract the same off-season but since has muffed several balls in front of the logo.

What the hell was the point of this?

What an ass.

I was thinking the same thing. No need.

This makes me laugh. Why would Under Armour cut out of the deal?

perhaps with the bad economy people have decided to cut obscenely-overpriced athletic wear out of their lives.

Make that "overpriced, low-quality, wear-once" athletic wear out of their lives. I bought a couple of underarmour golf polos and tees this year. All of them look like crap now. Heaven forbid you wash them with anything else. The Adidas shirts made from a similar material that I got at the same time for less money still look like new, even though I've worn them twice as much and washed them twice as much. Screw underarmour.

Under Armour first came out they pretty much had the "market" to themselves with that line of clothing. Now "Nike" is pretty much worn through-out the clubhouses. As previously stated by somebody else, I to had some under armour shirts and they were terrible after a few washes.

Is it me or does all athletic gear made of that nylonish material always stink like butt after a few wears? Every time I get a pair of warmups, or a lightweight jogging shirt, or anything after a few wears and washes it just smells like dirty gym clothes, no matter if it's been washed or not. Is there no technology to make that horrid stink go away?

i didn't know anything about the bad quality. i wanted to get some of those tight but breathable shirts for hiking and biking this winter, and went to dick's sporting goods. the under armour shirts were like $40, but there were reebok shirts for basically half the price so i just bought those.

Wool is the most expensive, but it's the best. Warmest, longest-lasting, and doesn't ever smell bad. I have a few pair of wool workout shirts and pants. They were about $80/each, but well worth it, especially as an undergarment for skiing or for jogging when it's cold out.

I got some straight brown t-shirts of theirs in '04 when I went to Iraq the first time, and those held up great. I bought a bunch of regular shirts of theirs (also from Dicks) this last year, and they're all in such bad shape after just a few months I'll never wear them again. I think I got one from Reebok too for around half price. It's still in pretty good shape.

I hate wool. Too itchy. At least the stuff the Army gives you is. I never bought anything wool like that on my own.

Well yeah, I'm sure the stuff the Army gets is itchy. The stuff that's pricey is more comfortable than poly-propeline or any other synthetic.

Haha, that writer just couldn't resist the cheesy dig at Soriano at the end. What a tard. Edited by Soul
