With the 10th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select…

Matthew Stafford, QB Georgia

It was hard to pass up Malcolm Jenkins when he could step in and fill the glaring void at FS immediately, but Stafford was the top player remaining on my big board.

The track record for underclassmen QBs isn’t great, but Stafford is a three-year starter in one of the toughest conferences in college football. He can struggle with accuracy at times, but he has a big-time arm and is a tough competitor. It would be in his best interest to sit for a short time, and he should be the Niners’ starter by 2010.

yeah as far as being realistic, there's no way that stafford (or a quarterback at least) doesn't get picked in the top 10. andre smith has less than zero chance of going #1 overall but whatevs.

Yeah, this really ruined my plans (in a good way). I thought I'd end up with Everette Brown and MAYBE Jenkins. Too hard to pass up Stafford, though I don't think there's any chance he's there for the real thing.

this wasn't intended to be predictive of what'll really happen, and you were too lazy to read my mention that i'd be slipping by any means necessary, but whatevs

Anyone want to put Buffalo on the clock?

Sorry, the clock manager was busy showering and getting ready for work.

EhDubya and the Bills are on the clock and I will PM him. And I love the Stafford to 49ers pick.

It makes sense, but we will not be hapy if two first round QBs within 4 yeras don't pan out...especially after having back to back HOF QBs. We're spoiled (at least, we used to be).

I think it'd be smart to keep Stafford on the bench this year and let Shaun Hill get beat down. Then, when Singletary has his running game going and, hopefully, a better defense and o-line, then turn the job over to Stafford in 2010 (like you said).

I think it'd help that Singletary wants to run like crazy, though. The pressure won't be on a young QB to lead the offense entirely.

Just meant to get someone on it, since I don't have "Mod Powers." :D

It would help. This will be an interesting year, as Singletary seems to be a bit of a wild card.

My "mod powers" consist only of editing my own thread title and post.

He was always one of my favorite players (along with Payton) so I'm certainly pulling for him to succeed.

If nothing else he should provide some great sound bites. :D

Good sound clips and looking forward to the draft are almost as good as going to the playoffs. How the mighty have fallen...

Well I'm a bit iffy on the pick of Stafford. I'm still not convinced he will be consistent in the pros and I don't think the 49ers need a QB since they will be running so much. I also rate Sanchez better than Stafford.

With that being said Stafford is a good prospect and good value at No. 10. With every single pass rusher off the board I can live with the pick.

I knew you wouldn't be available, so I didn't ask you for your opinion. The top 2 on my board were Stafford and Jenkins. It was VERY difficult to not pick Jenkins and plug him in that gaping FS hole.

I'll PM you my estimated board for Round 2.

How many rounds is this again?

Also, I didn't realize until just now that Matt Stafford went to the same high school as Clayton Kershaw...and probably around the same time.

Yes, they graduated the same year and are good friends.

That school's about 15 minutes from me. Too bad I wasn't paying attention a few years ago.

There hasn't been a set number of rounds, though I'm assuming we'll go as far as we can until the real draft starts. There may be a point in time, however, that we get so late that nobody wants to continue. I figure we'll play that by ear, though.
