WINTER CLASSIC: Red Wings Win 6-4 || 1/1/09 12:00 NBC

Posted (edited)

Just a disclaimer before I go buck wild... if you are not a hockey fan... WATCH THIS GAME. This will be one of the roughest, most hard hitting games you'll EVER see. It pits 2 original 6 teams against one another in the historic Wrigley Field (never has a baseball stadium been used to host an outdoor NHL game). I guarantee for you hockey skeptics, this IS the game to watch.

WINTER CLASSIC FAQ

What is the "Winter Classic"?

-It is the annual NHL outdoor game that only happens once per year. Last year it was the Penguins @ Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

How will wind/weather affect the game?

-The game CAN be called if the weather is too severe to be played in. As for the wind, the teams will switch sides at the 10 minute mark of the 3rd period to ensure optimal fairness.

Where can I buy Winter Classic unique gear?

-NHL.com Shop

GENERAL HOCKEY FAQ

What is icing?

-Icing occurs when a player shoots the puck across at least two red lines, the opposing team's goal line being the last, and the puck remains untouched. When icing occurs, a linesman stops play. Play is resumed with a faceoff in the defending zone of the team that committed the infraction.

What is offsides?

-A play is said to be offside if a player on the attacking team enters the attacking zone before the puck itself enters the zone, whether it is being carried by a teammate or sent into the attacking zone by an attacking player. If a defending player carries, passes, or otherwise intentionally sends the puck into his defensive zone, any attacking player in the zone is not offside. However, if an attacking player is attempting to shoot the puck into the attacking zone and it deflects off a defending player, an offside violation can still occur.

Are there ties?

-There used to be... the TIE stat was revoked after the lockout in '04. The last ties occurred on Sunday, April 4 2004, the last day of the 2003-04 regular season there were two ties, the last ties in the NHL. The Philadelphia Flyer and the NY Islanders skated to a 3-3 tie and the Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers finished up tied at 6-6. Now, instead of ties, we have OTL (Overtime Losses)... regardless of whether a team loses in a shootout or overtime, they at least get 1 point (2 if they win).

Major Penalties

-A major penalty is a stronger degree of penalty for a more severe infraction of the rules than a minor. Most penalties which incur a major are more severe instances of minor penalty infractions; the exception is fighting which always draws a major. A player who receives a major penalty will remain off the ice for five minutes of play during which his team will be short-handed. A major penalty will not end if a goal is scored against the short-handed team. (A lot of times a MAJOR these days results in a 10 minute game misconduct as well, meaning the player is ejected the majority of the time).

Please post any Winter Classic questions that I can update in the FAQ.

Also, if you are new to the sport of hockey, feel free to ask about rules or anything regarding the sport.

I am sure either I, or kujay, NewUserName, Anze, nilo, Kyle, and many others can answer the question and I will immediately update it in the main post!

why do people like it

Most exciting nonstop sport ever. The main reason people say "hockey sucks" is because they don't understand the rules and won't give it a chance.

wouldn't it be easier with a ball

hahah they were right about you being on fire lately, i must admit... but know, we prefer 1/3 cyldinders that are frozen.

why do people like it

whether you like the sport or not, you at least have to respect the fact that hockey is pretty much the only sport left that is not full of greedy, arrogant, primadonnas and the players actually care more about the sport than the money. hockey players are generally legit

With 5 games left (including one against the Wings) before the Winter Classic... this game might be a battle for 1st place in the division... oh man oh man.

why do people like it

Why do people watch the NFL?

Why do people listen to Nickleback?

Why do people read James Patterson books?

I dont understand these things but

Why do people like anything at all?

Life would be boring if we all liked the same stuff.

Cynosure is excited that his team that has been down for 10 years is getting good and has a very exciting game with an arch rival being played at Wrigley Field. It reminds me of the days awhile back when the Deadthings started to contend and become the Red Wings again.

I love the work you are doing to promote hockey Cyno, but don't you think the average person has a decent knowledge of hockey? I mean the NHL has been around for our entire lives, people played floor hockey in gym class or roller hockey or ice hockey with friends growing up etc. At some point people have been exposed to hockey in their lives I would think.

Maybe I'm wrong?

You'd really be surprised. Some questions on rules and such have come up in the game threads. You should hear some of the questions that come out of the mouths of people when a game is on in a bar, even non-females.

Also, there have been a lot of rule changes over the years.

Familiar with does not equal knowing all the rules. We played a lot of floor hockey, but there was never any icing called. I would imagine most anybody who grew up in an area that regularly fell below freezing during the winter would have a hard time avoiding any exposure to hockey. But then again, I grew up in a mostly white suburb of Chicago during a time when the Blackhawks were very relevant. I'm sure there are plenty of examples of people who never played NHL94, pond hockey, floor hockey or even got on skates. It was very easy to grow up in Chicago and never actually see a hockey game on TV.

I'd love to attend this, but I didn't win the raffle and I'm not willing to pay over $300 a ticket to freeze my butt off in my hungover state. I'll probably just go to Wrigleyville to absorb the atmosphere and watch the game.

The Cubs offered me a chance to buy tickets but I declined. I'll probably watch it on TV but I'm not enough of a hockey fan to brave Wrigley in January. It's cold enough in April.

This does seem like it would be a cool thing to attend, but as far as watching on t.v.... no thanks. Plus, I think I'll be skiing that day.

Same here. I wouldn't go in person though. I see enough sporting events in person where it's outside and under 35 degrees.

Actually I think I'd rather watch this on TV than attend. Going to hockey games is better than going to, for instance, football games. But I'm looking forward to waking up late on the 1st, then sitting down on my couch with some friends eating, drinking and watching sports all day. Skiing would be a great option though.
