As long as Lou isn't tempted to start him more than 5-10 times a year, this is a good signing (assuming salary is appropriate...i.e. $1 or 2 mil...)

It's really not though. Theres 0 Logic, especially when it gives me the sickening feeling that it could be the only signing of the off season.

Hes the type of player who would be good to have around in September as an extra set of legs, but thats about it.

There's no reason to think it'll be the only signing of the season. You're really being quick with the kneejerk.

I don't get this board's infatuation with Joey Gathright.

I expected to open this thread up and find a bunch of people upset at the signing, but instead everyone is falling all over themselves to praise him.

Why? I don't get it. He's fast. Congratulations, why don't we sign Roger Cedeno? Why don't we just grab an ex-college wide receiver, he'd have as much baseball skill as Joey freakin' Gathright. Hell, why didn't we just stick with Pie? He's fast, too.

Joey Gathright's career-best OPS+ is 88. And yet this whole board is ready to anoint him as some kind of savior. Are you people seeing the same thing I am? Clearly not.

Badnews much?

Gathright would be fine as the 5th OF'er or CF in Iowa, he has Pierre's arm but can cover alot of ground. If the Cubs trade Pie, he'd likely assume the role of defensive replacement/pinch runner.

This isn't a bad signing if it's just for a 5th outfielder incase we end up trading Pie or everyday CF in Triple A. I would assume that this will either be a minor league deal, or 1 year major league contract thats under 900,000. Edited by cubsfan26

If he's the last bench guy, and we pay him a mil or less, then big whoop.

Lou could do a lot of pinch running double switch defensive replacements for Bradley...afterall, whos going to pinch run when we get rid of marquis? :D

If we want a fast guy who has a ton of holes in his offensive game but plays plus defense, why wouldn't we just keep Pie for the league minimum?

Barring, of course, his inclusion in some sort of actually good trade.

And IMB is right. Gathright sucks. He's fricking terrible.

In seven years of minor and major league ball, encompassing nearly 3000 PAs, Joey Gathright has hit 2 home runs. 2!

Just to put that in perspective, that's 1 less home run than Mitch Williams hit, in almost 3000 fewer PAs.

Let's all relax, if he is just coming to spring training, what does it hurt? Billy Crystal got to play in spring training for a major league club. Let's just kind of treat it like that unless if he impresses or something really changes down the road. Personally, I'd rather have him and trade Pie to get something useful, but before we even go that far, he has to earn a spot. Something that is no guarantee.

Anybody who is excited or upset by this move is way out of whack. Anybody excited by it needs to hope we also sign Usain Bolt, and anybody worried/upset/angry over it needs to realize he will be our 5th OF at best. This signing was nothing more than taking a shot on a kid with speed/defense potential to help us in the late innings. Nothing more, nothing less. Zero risk here.

I wonder if our organization has a clue sometimes.

FUN FACT: Khalil Greene out-OPSd Joey Gathright by only .016 last year

Yeah...signing guys like this to compete for the last couple roster spots is such a clueless move. What are we thinking?

He's a solid defender, and he does have game changing speed. As long as he never bats, I'm not too upset with the signing.

I do wonder what this means for Pie, though. If this is a ML contract, Pie is definitely on the move.
