I understand that, but is paying one guy upwards of $160 million the best option to fix that? Wouldn't there be other viable alternatives to signing the biggest FA on the market?

There's a finite number of quality options. If a team has the room in the budget I don't see the problem. Boston has consistently gone after top tier talent and made it work within their budget while succeeding at a very high level. Why do people have a problem with that?

I don't necessarily have a problem with it, I'm just confused as to why they're so adamant on it. Going into the offseason, I doubt first base was one of Boston's weak points. I understand Lowell got hurt and all that, but his numbers weren't terrible before his injury. I suppose Lowell is the odd man out in this situation.

I have a friend who's an Orioles fan, and he's convinced that the O's are getting him even though Tex's suitors are being widdled down to Boston, Anaheim, and Washington. He seems to think that the national media is intentionally being misled to set up for a WWE-style SWERVE~! at the last minute.

I wish I could be that hopeful about my team. Then again, I nearly convinced myself that Sabathia would turn down eleventy billion dollars from the Yankees to stay in Milwaukee, so maybe I am. :D

Your friend must visit orioleshangout.com. Those are convinced Olney is wrong because a few days ago one of there "insiders" who claims the Orioles won't be outbid said a few days ago to expect some false media info in the next couple of days. As soon as the Olney article came out they were all "lol Buster...you're going to feel stupid when you found out you were lied to!".

I'm sure it's just an elaborate scheme by Boras to lead the national media off track. Tex will even fly in for a press conference, but when they hand him the Red Sox jersey he'll turn around and hit Epstein with a steel chair before ripping off his shirt and revealing an Orioles jersey. I think I read something like that on OH.

Red Sox owner John Henry just e-mailed several media members with a stunning twist in the team's pursuit of Mark Teixeira. Henry's words: "We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor."

wow maybe OH was right.

they're probably talking about the nationals rumored offer of 200+

I for one am going to laugh my ass off if Teixeira spurns one of the winningest and highest profile franchises in MLB in favor of spending the rest of his career in baseball purgatory so he can add an extra $10 or $20M to what is already guaranteed to be a contract that will put an end to all of his monetary needs for several lifetimes.

i agree, and that's why i still think he ends up in boston. this is all just posturing. it's not like we're talking about a 3-4 year deal. we're talking about 8 or more years and essentially the rest of his productive baseball life. at least with baltimore he's play for loyal fans and be kind of a hometown hero.... plus they could compete relatively soon. washington just seems like a nightmare destination.

Something tells me that the Nats offer is probably gonna have an opt-out clause. So he'd probably be taking it with the hopes of pulling in an extra 2 or 3 million annually for 3 years, and then head back out on the market if he's still healthy after that.

Hypothetical: Would you rather take $150MM to play for a World Series contender or $160MM to play for one of the worst teams in baseball?

It's folly to try to predict who will and won't be a contender for eight years, and the odds of winning even if you are on a contender are pretty slim.

I'll take the cash.

Easily take the $150MM to play for a winner. When you're making over $100MM, does $10MM really matter at that point?

Stop talking about the $10M. That's probably the last reason Boston is backing off. Read what Henry said, "After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor,...We all have limits," he wrote the AP on Wednesday. "Eight years is a very long time in baseball and everywhere else."

It's more about the extra money, AND 8 years, AND opt out clause, AND perks that Boras asks for. All terms that are heavily slanted to the players favor and leave the team with little flexibility.

My first thought was simply that Boston was calling Boras's bluff. He's notorious for getting the big money owners to bid against themselves. If they are saying Washington is offering X, we'd like you to match, why not back out?
