Paul Sullivan suggests Chad Gaudin is a non-tender candidate for the Cubs. He's set to get an arbitration raise on this year's $1.775MM salary.

Dont quite see the point. Hes a quality reliever, who can spot start, plus hes only like 25 years old. I say keep the guy/

Agreed. This would be really, really stupid. Maybe the dumbest move of all of the offseason. Especially if Marshall ends up going in the Peavy deal. If nothing else, they should trade him. I can't imagine there'd be a shortage of teams interested in him in this years market.

But then again, this was reported by Paul Sullivan, so that probably means they're close to an agreement with him instead.

Wasn't he in Lou's "doghouse" due to his drunken mishaps last season? The guy has obvious value, but guys that end up that way with Lou seem to get the boot.

Stuid doghouse.

I just posted the same thing, but it seems this is the thread everyone is talking in. I had a question in mine and will ask it here, if we non-tender him do we face any sort of buyout/termination fee/fine? Or is it a clean break and he just comes off the books?

Even in that scenario, there's no way they couldn't get another young arm back. The guy was talented enough to break into the league at 20 and stick. He can start or relieve and be expected to perform at worse league average. Like was said earlier, he's only 25, so he should only be expected to improve as he's still several years shy before he hits his physical peak. Someone would trade for him. If the Pads want a cheap major league arm back for Peavy, then they could package him into that. In this market with everyone afraid of overpaying for an FA, his value should be pretty decent in a trade.

I wouldn't bet against Chad Gaudin being able to outperform Marquis or Marshall next year. No reason to nontender him.

If the Cubs are under this hard of a budget cap, and are pooling all their money to get Peavy and a RF, maybe they shouldn't have spent 13M on Ryan Dempster.(Not that I ever buy a word Sullivan says, sensationalist hack and all, nor do I think the Dempster contract is that bad in a vaccuum, but seriously?)

Im getting pretty damn tired of Lous doghouse. He needs to get over some of this crap and play the players who deserve to play, not the ones who do every little thing Big Bad Lou says.

No, the Cubs have no obligations if they non-tender Gaudin.

And non-tendering him would be an epically stupid thing to do.

yeah i don't think that contract was a good idea, even though i guess their thinking was that there will only be one year of overlap from marquis to dempster. mostly i am skeptical that dempster can produce at a $13M per year level for the next 4 years.

Who is going to pitch out of the pen this year?

So far we've let Howry and Wood leave, we are talking about non-tendering Gaudin and Marshall might go in a Peavy trade.

Marmol

Gagg - I mean Gregg

Samardzija

Cotts

Guzman?

Wuertz

Ascanio?

yeah i gotta say, i sure felt better about the back end of the cubs pen the last two years than i do about their pen this year. gregg strikes me as an average pitcher who people think is good because he had a lot of saves the last two years. samardzija still needs an offspeed pitch. wuertz is still pretty good if lou can get over the fact that he will walk more people than you'd like him to.

Oh dont worry, Im sure Hendry will go out and get him a veteran reliever for like 5 mil or so.

Ok let me get this straight:

Cubs trade young minor leaguer Jose Ceda to the Marlins for Kevin Gregg who was likely to be non-tender, but now he's likely to get a raise in arb.

Because of that move, the Cubs are considering non-tendering Chad Gaudin because of his "contract?"

Ths would be a  move.

Hello. Have you forgotten about Chad "I Just Signed a Lifetime Contract to be a Cub until I die" Fox?

no way. this would be beyond insane. not even Hendry is that dumb. i refuse to believe it.
I think the only person that is this dumb is Paul Sullivan. At least I hope so...

I really really doubt Chad Gaudin will be nontended. If the Cubs wanna dump his salary they could trade him and get something good in return. If the Cubs need to fit Peavy/RF in their budget I can see him traded to a team that wants him to start for a younger cheaper reliever. I still think he will back with the Cubs next year though.

Marquis and Marshall? Maybe? I'm still crossing my fingers that JH brings Wood back. He would make all the difference, wouldn't he?

Since the Cubs non-tendered him, he can't be signed till May.

MLB updated that rule in the latest agreement. They still have a window to sign him.
