CHICAGO -- The brother of Cubs catcher Henry Blanco was reportedly found shot to death on Monday night in Venezuela.

The body of Carlos Simon Blanco Sanchez was discovered in Monpote, in the state of Miranda. Local police were treating the case as a kidnapping/murder, as the victim was reported kidnapped sometime after 6 p.m. local time Sunday.

According to the newspaper El Universal in Venezuela, Carlos Blanco, 39, was being held for a ransom reported at 200 million Venezuelan Bolivares. Henry Blanco had been in negotiations with the kidnappers.

Someone's mother was kidnapped in Venezuela in the last year or two...right?

This is a terrible story. My sympathies to the Blanco family.

Knowing that his brother was kidnapped because of who Henry is has got to feel absolutely horrible. This is the first time I've ever heard of the kidnappers actually hurting the person.

My sympathies to Henry and his family.

Whenever I've heard of a players family member being taken I've never heard of the kidnapper actually hurting them. I know it's not uncommon in regular kidnappings. That's why it's so surprising for me that they killed Henry's brother.

Horrible, horrible, horrible story. My sympathies to Henry and his family.

And in case anyone was wondering 200 million Bolivares = about $93,000 USD according to xe.com. So these guys killed his brother over $93,000 dollars. From the sound of the story it seemed like Henry was more than willing to pay, he easily had the money to cover that. This is such a tragic and sick story.

My deepest condolences, Mr. Blanco

A bit crass for this particular thread, but no, Blanco is currently a free agent.

Wow....that's just cold dude.

Anyway, hopefully he and his family can deal with this tragedy. He's one of my favorite Cubs.

I really really want Blanco back. He is the perfect backup catcher for this team. He knows his role, and when he plays, he plays pretty damn well offensively and defensively. Hopefully this doesn’t drive him to retirement…

I agree that the Cubs are a perfect setting for Blanco. But, he will have to sign for much less than he made last year in order for that to happen.
