cubs should sign ty wigginton.

And this would accomplish...

a right-handed hitter that could come off the bench and hit the ball out of the infield. a 3b/1b backup, which the cubs feel they need.

so a couple things, i guess.

Can he still play the OF adequately enough to spell Soriano/Bradley if we needed him to?

Yes.

If there were enough money for him, though, we would have kept DeRosa.

Fair point.

In a offseason were very teams actually improved, and most teams got worse

Is that even possible?

Considering that (a) the Yankees made themselves significantly, significantly better; and (b) there are a legion of quality free agents twiddling their thumbs at the end of January, the answer is yes. For now.

I was just looking at the Yankees roster today. Make no mistake, they are really good and talented, but look at their bench and their bullpen. They have front line talent but lack depth. Are they planning on using Hughes and Kennedy in the pen? Plus, if one of their position players gets hurt, they don't have much to back them up.

Of course, they definitely have the trading chips to make a deal at the deadline, and rest assured they definitely will if their problems are exposed.

I wouldn't say they lack depth across the board, they have really good depth in the OF and rotation/BP they are weak up the middle though. An OF/DH rotation consisting of Swisher, Nady, Matsui, Damon, Cabrera, Gardner will be an asset for them. They have some good young arms in the bullpen and if 1 or 2 of their starters get hurt/needs a break Hughes/Kennedy are good enough to get 10-15 starts between them, that it's not a major step down.

Im on a Cubs blog and seen this

About 5 days ago, the Chicago Tribune sold the Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field, and 25% of a cable network to the Rickett Family worth about 900 million. The Rickett Family wrote a blog that he (Thomas Rickett) will take on the contract of Jake Peavy (63 million over 4 years).

Does anyone know the Ricketts family blog site? We have the green light, so lets get wheelin and dealin, Jimbo.

Hope it's true, but I wouldn't really trust a site that can't even get the guy's last name right.

Is that even possible?

Of course it is. The Yankees singlehandedly made three teams (LAA, MIL, and TOR) significantly worse.

If you've got a handful of teams buying, and the rest either selling or struggling to tread water, then the net losers are going to outnumber the net winners.

Now having said that, let's see where guys like Dunn and Manny and Abreu etc. wind up before we pass out final grades.

A better question would be why would Wigginton wanna come to the Cubs after hitting 285/350/876 with 23 HR last year? He's not gonna play everyday, and would probably cost as much or more then DeRosa. Wigginton is a everyday player, he's not gonna want to come off the bench. Thats a role for someone like Rich Aurilia or Kevin Millar who are towards the end of their careers.

The Yankees spent alot of money this offseason, and added some good players. But I think it's debateable on how much better they really are.

Mike Mussina 08

20-9, 3.37 era

CC Sabathia 08

17-10, 2.70 era

*Sabathia might have a hard time matching Mussina numbers pitching in the AL East.

Jason Giambi-08

247/373/876

Mark Teixeria-08

308/410/962

*Upgrade, but possibly not a huge upgrade

Bob Abreu-08

296/371/843

Nick Swisher-08

219/332/743

*Possible downgrade

Having Wang for another 17 starts, and AJ Burnett will help, and they should be better. But I don't think they went from a third place team last year to being unstoppable or even the favorites in the AL East this year.

There are a lot of teams that could use a starting third baseman, starting with the Twins and White Sox, and maybe the Padres and Giants.

Here we go again....

A previously discussed trade of All-Star right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy from the Padres to the Cubs is expected to be revived once the sale of the Chicago club is finalized later this spring, sources close to the situation told MLB.com.

highly placed sources suggested the move looks like a matter of when, not if, based on various developments.

Crane Kenney talked about the next steps in the process for Tom Ricketts to take over the Cubs. The Ricketts are working with the Tribune Company to finalize the deal. He said they have worked through the agreements and they have been submitted to the bankruptcy court and Major League Baseball.

After the next round of approvals, the last step is for the other owners to give their approval. Kenney stressed the Cubs are hoping to start the season with a new owner in place.

Thats kinda interesting it sounds like the Tribune and Ricketts already have a deal in place now. They just need approvals from the bankruptcy court and MLB.

Kaplan then turned his attention to the 2009 Cubs and asked if the Cubs have any on-field moves left this off-season. Crane Kenney said, "We have a few more things to do." He talked about the organizational meetings in Arizona back in October and said one of the objectives was to find a way to get Mike Fontenot more at bats.

The Cubs did not foresee Joey Gathright and Aaron Miles being non-tendered and they feel both players will help this season.

Crane Kenney said, "Jim and Randy have a plan and they are not done" and added later, "Jim and Randy have a lot of work to do" before the season starts.

This part of that article was weird

Holden Kushner asked him about Jake Peavy and how many questions he fielded about Peavy during the convention. Bush added that the media has really overplayed the Cubs desire to trade for Peavy and he's really not sure why.

Bush said, "There's nothing to the Peavy stuff. We like our pitching staff and lineup the way it is. Peavy is a member of the Padres." The Cubs are in the process of getting ready for Spring Training.
