Hmm. Freeing up DeRo and Marquis money and getting Hermida could mean that Hendry will make a run at Furcal?

Where did Hermida come from? And who is better ... Hermida or Bradley?

Hermida can actually play for us and not just sit on the DL . . . so Hermida.

Teach me about Hermida, I feel like I'm missing something. He had a great year in 07, his first full year, but was pretty awful last year. His slugging and OBP took a big hit. Was there a reason for that, or are we just hoping to buy low and hope he returns to form?

he's only 25

he's had major league success

he's getting out of dolphins stadium

he has awesome minor league numbers

i think he's a great buy-low option

Ok, I wasn't sure if he had gotten hurt or something. I wouldn't mind him over the likes of Teahen and DeJesus, but I still think I'd rather have Bradley.

Of course if Hendry's plan is to get Peavy, get Hermida, and then go hard after Furcal, I'd be all over that.

I'm the one who suggested Furcal, not any of the sources. It was just a suggestion. With the money for losing Marquis and DeRosa basically making Peavy's contract a wash, and getting a cheap RF like Hermida (Cedeno's money would make that a wash), maybe there is room to add Furcal.

Oh I know it wasn't an official rumor, I was just thinking along a similar mindset to that. I don't know how much we'd have exactly, but I'm sure after unloading Marquis and DeRosa would more or less wash out Peavy for this year, and Hermida would wash out Cedeno, we'd still have some extra money floating around to make another move or two.

There was also a rumor floating that whoever Hendry got for RF (Bradley, Abreu, Ibanez) would have the contract backloaded to make it work for 2009.

Harden is probably off the books after '09 and Lee and Lilly? comes off after '10.

If we as fans know all these things I'm sure Florida and other GMs know this too. I don't think Hermida is a buy low candidate. I bet you the asking price is very high for him especially now that they moved some other pieces.

The White Sox got Carlos Quentin from the DBacks for a minor league first baseman. Teams lose faith in young players quite often.

Hermida won't come cheap. If he did he already would have been traded.

I'm not saying cheap, but Pie and Marshall should get it done for him - that's not a cheap offer. Atkins or Cedeno might be enough in place of Marshall, as well.

I think Pie and Marshall for Hermida would be a good deal for both sides.

Yep, though if BBB's speculation is right, Pie and Cedeno for Hermida would be even better.

On another board they said Levine also said the Cubs were close to trading for a RF along with Peavy. I wonder who that could be Teahen? Hermida ? Dejesus?

WHat board?

Cubs.com board

LOL. Suddenly I don't believe we're trading for a RF anymore.

They said he said that when he interrupted on ESPN 1000 right after mentioning the Peavy trade was close he said that the Cubs were also close to a trade for a RF/had the possibility to do so.

Quick question, I'm having a debate with an NY fan at work. He's a Yankees fan and happy about getting CC and said CC is a better pick up than Peavy. At first i thought he migth be right but after looking past all the ESPN bias and coverage of CC, does CC even come close to the numbers Peavy has put up? I mean SOs, Ws, ERA, etc? I mean you can say the health concern can be applied to both since they're both power pitchers, i mean you may never know maybe next year CCs arm starts acting up. So putting health aside who would you rather trade for with the package the cubs have supposedly out there for Peavy, CC or Peavy? I know Peavy is a right handed pitcher but does that justify picking CC over Peavy?

Another thing and i know someone is bound to bring it up, Yeah petco is a hitters park but dont use that as your argument because its been proven wrong before.

I think your friend is being a homer, or he's just an ESPN sheep, if he's taking a hard definitive stand on this one.

CC is 28, Peavy is 27. No real edge in age or projectability.

Peavy's career ERA, WHIP and what not are better, but he pitches in PETCO and the NL, while CC was in the AL most of his career. They both sport a career ERA+ of 121. They both have one Cy Young award. They both average over 200 innings over the last 4 years. They've both had some DL time in their careers.

CCs contract I think is riskier than Peavys, and a whole lot more expensive. Peavy will cost us players in addition to the salary though. Honestly, I think it's hard to make a definitive case for either being significantly better than the other.

Did it sound like a separate trade or that this RF would come as part of the Peavy deal

I didn't hear it but from what the posters were saying it sounds like they have another deal set up to trade for a OF and it is not part of the Peavy deal.

It does seem like a separate deal from the Peavy trade.

I wonder if the player they are looking to trade for in the outfield is a better player then Milton Bradley. Bradley seems to be a damn good option to me and I dont see the Cubs trading for a better OF then him..

Agreed. That's why I want the Cubs to sign him so badly :)

Bradley. But, for the price, I'd take Hermida. Especially if it meant having the necessary money to get Furcal. Theriot then platoons with Fontenot.

Good Lord, that would be WONDERFUL!

Problem is, Bradley can't play the outfield without getting hurt. It's been a long time since he's played 100 games in the field.

Wasn't Randy Winn also rumored to be on the trading block at the deadline last year?

edit: *Doh* saw he was listed as a possibility in the tread.

Could definitely see the Giants eager to move him if they're trying to clear out salary for Furcal and Schierholtz is ready for the full time spot. Not that I'm in love with him by any means, but he could fit the mold for what Hendry (ie Lou) is looking for ... a guy who can bat lefty (switch) and possibly fill a top of the order spot.
