# We know you like "crazy rumors," so here's one Perrotto heard. The Cubs would possibly entertain trading Carlos Zambrano if they acquire Jake Peavy.

Hendry and Towers are playing "War". Hendry has all the aces and kings.

The Cubs biggest need is RF. Peavy is not a RF. If the Cubs can't get Peavy, they appear to be frontrunners for RJ.

Peavy is not a necessity, therefore, Hendry doesn't need to trade the farm for Peavy. Towers is on the outside looking in. Hendry knows it. Hendry will offer a fair price, but he will not be taken to the cleaners.

I saw this and just laughed. No way.

The GMs all have been in meetings this morning talking about procedurual stuff. Nothing is imminent with any trade. There is no press conference. The Cubs are not in a payroll dump to get Abreu. I still think Bradley is the more doable candidate. Randy Johnson is in play, but not on the front burner. The DeRosa talk has not originated with the Cubs.

So what type of deadline do you think were looking for for some kind of closure on this thing? Is the Thursday deadline still in play before Towers ends the talks?

Too much is being made of this "deadline." Towers never used the word "deadline." He just said he wanted to see some progress made. You can define that to mean anything you want. If the two GMs actually sit down and talk today or tomorrow, they can always define that as progress. Realistically, Towers is in no position to be issuing deadlines anyway. If ownership tells him he's got to move the guy, then he's got to move him. I saw both GMs a little while ago. They were coming out of the GM meetings. I didn't detect any sense of urgency.

Trading Z would be the dumbest thing ever
There isn't anyone who would be dumb to trade. Trading for less value than a guy is worth is dumb, not just trading him in the first place.

Trading Soto would be dumb.

Trading Z would be dumb.

Any trade that would weaken your ball club would be dumb. Value is only part of the equation.

Would trading Soto for Martin, Ethier, Kershaw and Kemp be dumb?

What makes it dumb is the return. Not who you're giving up.

This has got to be th most insane trade related roller coaster ever. I cant remember this kind of on again off again howry, in real time no less. Even the Roberts fiasco wasnt this ridiculous. I demand closure one way or another.

it's only a roller coaster because you're following it minute by minute for some insane reason. if you just, like, checked it at the end of the day or something your life would probably be less stressful.

Not to mention taking every single report as gospel and thinking it's really on again, off again, and then on again.

It's pretty obvious what is going on. Trade negotiations. Doesn't really matter how each report tries to spin it.

Trading Z or Soto would not be dumb if it strengthens the ballclub.

It would be if it doesn't.

I'm not sure what point you're even trying to make.

Zambrano to the Yankees for Cano and more dude.

Kidding, kidding.

Not going to happen.

There is nothing on the yankees that i would trade Z for, not even joba. I think a lot of the Yankees prospects have been overvalued because of the east coast bias media. Hughes, Kennedy, Cabrera are all overrated. Joba is good but he will not last as a starter, reminds me too much of Wood. Like i said i wouldn't trade Z for anyone on that Roster, not even Arod with his 30 mil a year contract. If you're going to trade Z you have to be smart about it, you can't overvalue him either but you can't undervalue him. I think trading Z for someone like Hanley is fair, maybe trading Z pie and Cedeno for Lincecom is fair. Cano i think is falling off. I can't stand it when people see a yankees trade rumors and see cabrera, hughes and kennedy and act like its such a good package. These guys have not proven anything on the major league level, not to say marshal is better than hughes but doesn't marshall have a better ERA than hughes at this level?

Well, heh, I was joking. Z is going nowhere for a whole lot of reasons. Least of all that should Hendry ever ask him to waive his no trade clause, you mine as well fire up the theme from Sopranos. Only instead of a gun, Z has fists. Of death.

Id definitely hate to be any water cooler that foolishly wandered into that room.

Considering that it's day 2 of the winter meetings, they have a couple of days left, Towers only said he wants "progress" before they go home...why should Hendry accept that offer today? We now know of at least one acceptable package that the Padres would take. That puts Towers at a disadvantage...you know it won't get any more expensive. The only things that can happen is either the package gets cheaper, or they keep Peavy. Hendry has at least two days to see if that package is Towers bottom line or not. It's not like Towers can trade Peavy to anyone else on short notice if we don't take it.

Hendry deserves a little slack on this one. From a negotiation standpoint, he's playing it right.

If the Padres' ownership is demanding his salary off the books, and Peavy is limiting the options to only the Cubs.....

Sounds like Hendry's holding the cards, no? If that's the case then I wouldn't be so quick to do anything either.

I think those are the two factors that this depends on and i'm not sure if Bruce can confirm them both. One which is, has the padres FO told Towers that he needs to move Peavy Period and it needs to be done before the start of the of the season. Two does Peavy really just want to go to the Cubs? Would he consider the Angels, Yankees or Dodgers? I can belive the first one but i think peavy would be open to a trade to more than just the cubs. Hendry does hold most of the card but you can't get cocky cause something can pop up out of nowhere. Today in the morning i felt the deal might get done by today but now i'm feeling like nothing will get done during the meetings and that there is also the possibility of it not happening because of the padres asking for too much.

If something pops up out of nowhere then we go to war with our current rotation, which is still pretty damn good. And we keep our prospects/players too.

I'm not sure we can really lose in this situation, unless we throw way too much away to get Peavy.

He hasn't been told he has to move Peavy. He's been told that payroll must be 40m for the '09 season. However that happens, ownership probably doesn't care, just as long as the budget is met.

No one is taking Giles' contract. And Giles has basically said he will veto any trade. Giles and Peavy make up 20m of the 40m budget by themselves, leaving 20m left to split among 23 players. That's less than 1m per player.

In order for Towers to save his job, Peavy has to go. Unless he somehow magically trades Giles.

Unconfirmed rumor from Andrew Baggarly: Sabathia declined the Yankees' offer. He still printed it though. The Giants are expected to meet with Sabathia this weekend; they'd need to get creative to sign him.

Don't say I didn't tell you so when the Yankees surprisingly jump into the Peavy sweepstakes

(but if they don't, please conveniently forget I said this)

They're looking at Lowe, Sheets, and Burnett. I doubt they get involved.

I hope.

One thing about Hendry-he can strike when you least expect it. I remember hearing rumors about Harden, and that it would happen around the trade dealine, and then bam, all of the sudden I remember turning on the news and them talking about Sean Gallagher packing his bags for Oakland. Same with Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Nomar, and Zambrano. Sometimes, after not hearing much, big trades and signings are completed suddenly and without warning.

I somehow doubt Peavy would accept a trade to NY.
