O's could be getting Marquis

As usual read as little or as much into this as you want. Here's the deal I was told that was on the table to the Cubs:

Cubs get Peavy from SD

Orioles get Pie, Marquis + 4 million cash from CHI

Phillies get Derosa from CHI

SD gets Hill, Vitters, Cedeno from CHI, Olson form Bal, Happ from PHI

I dont think i'll be alone in being ticked off if Hendry is the one thing that causes this thing to not go down.

I guarantee Hendry won't be "the only thing" that causes this not to go down.

No Howry. I can't believe, after all this time, someone would doubt Hendry's desire to get his man. If there's one thing I like a lot about him, that's it.

I mean, there's no point to even be worried about Hendry pulling a trigger if it means he can get it done. If he's capable (payroll wise, other teams-wise, etc.), I have no doubt in my mind he will do it.

So this is the trade according to OH:

Cubs get Peavy from SD

Orioles get Pie, Marquis + 4 million cash from CHI

Phillies get Derosa from CHI

SD gets Hill, Vitters, Cedeno from CHI, Olson form Bal, Happ from PHI

It's nice that we get Peavy but why are we making our offense weaker?

Well giving up DeRo, Pie, Vitters, Hill, Cedeno and Marquis (+$4M) sure leaves us with a lot of trading chips...

That's nuts

We wouldn't need trading chips though if we got Peavy+Bradley. Plus, out of those six players, who at this point really has any value? Vitters, obviously. DeRo, but we're selling high. Cedeno isn't good, Hill has gone crazy, Marquis is overpaid, and Pie is a question mark.

DeRosa, Marquis, Pie, Hill, Vitters, Cedeno, and 4 million for Peavy. Oh, is that all?

edit: And Pie + Marquis at 5M for Olson? hahaha

Yeah, that's a lot to trade. Something would need to come back to the Cubs, as all 3 of the other teams are getting great deals.

I have no problem taking the info from OH. I believe it was legit info last year (as we later found out that even Roberts thought he had been dealed once or twice), and I don't believe they just make things up. For whatever reason (probably Angelos) that deal never got done and was a huge clusterfreak. But they were reporting the same things everyone else was (sometimes things others weren't) before the others did.

As with all of this kind of stuff, you take it with a grain of salt.

I wouldn't worry about it. I strongly doubt that anyone will ask Hendry to give up six players to get one in return.

My personal hope is that by including DeRosa in the deal we can keep Vitters. I think that we can get a similar level of production from the combination of Fontenot and a potential Rule 5 pick like Jesus Guzman.

I think the Cubs assume that they can get a LH masher at 2b, so the offense actually turns out to be similiar or better at 2B in a platoon, along with Fontenot giving them a lefty bat ine lineup a little more against righties.

Too may conflicting sources are becoming a downer. Sure, we all want to believe the "deal is imminant" "it would be a shocker if the trade didnt go down" and the "deal is already in place" crowd, but it would be foolish to completely dismiss the "no deal is close" and the "no deal can get done without first figuring out the ownership situation" crowd as well. Chances are, the truth issomewhere in the middle, but it will be one hell of a buzzkill if Thursday rolls around, and Toewers has had enough and hangs on to Peavy.

Yeah, that's horrible logic. About 90% of the short-season A ball team won't make it to the majors, so the Cubs should just trade the entire Boise Hawks franchise to San Diego too by that logic.

The fact is, the Cubs would be losing 2/5 of their starting rotaiton from last year, their starting 2B, two of their projected bench players from this year, AND their #1 prospect....and would get 1 (albeit good) player.

I really dont foresee a scenerio in which this trade goes down and Vitters isnt involved.

I feel fairly comfortable completely ignoring that crowd. But you're right about the rest.

Anybody wanna bet that Rosenthal and/or Stark post an article sometime today yet saying a deal is close/Hendry doesn't need new ownership's approval? Those two have been all over the place in their reports.

I'm not saying they should trade six players, or even think they will, but how big of a loss are those guys? They are replaceable. We're really complaining about losing 2/5 of our starting rotation, when we added Harden last year and Peavy this year? We're complaining about losing two bench players? That's all that Cedeno will be. These aren't high quality players that we're losing.

And 1 of those two is not a very good pitcher for his contract, while the other is helpless in winter ball and the minors. And Cedeno is likely to be non-tendered anyways according to Bruce. You can't just say 2/5th's of their rotation without actually analyzing those players.

I have trouble believing we're giving up 6 players to get Peavy, leaving us with possible holes at 2B, sub MI, and RF plus giving up our top prospect. I would still like to get another usable piece in this trade, i.e. Scott from the O's or Hairston from the Padres.

I am hoping that if we're giving DeRosa to the Phillies to get one guy the Pads want and Pie + Marquis to the O's to get another guy the Pads want that we can get this done without including Vitters.

But it's just hoping and looking at the value of the players involved.
