Who is going to platoon with Fontenot? (Career vs. LHP = .247 .313 .370) I guess Fukudome can play RF when Bradley goes down. I thought Hendry was obsessed with versatility, its surprising that he's willing to give up DeRosa, but I'm all for selling high.

Someone in the Mark Loretta, Ray Durham, Alex Cintron category, I would assume.

Grudz would be a cheap platoon option that kills lefties. All this talk of the Cubs trading Derosa makes me wonder if in one of these four team deals BRoberts also becomes a Cub.

The Jake Peavy-Cubs trade talks have reached a point where it will be a stunner if the Cubs don’t acquire Peavy, who immediately would become the best pitcher on a staff that already boasts Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Ted Lilly and Rich Harden.

That’s because two general managers -– the Padres’ Kevin Towers and the Cubs’ Jim Hendry -- are working hard to make it happen. If it doesn’t happen, it’ll become one of the few trades -– maybe the first -- that couldn’t be made when BOTH general managers were motivated to get it done.

Towers told reporters on Monday that the Cubs were the only team he is continuing to talk to about Peavy and that making a Peavy trade was his full focus at the winter meetings. He then went out and proved it by working to facilitate a potentially four-team trade that would send Mark DeRosa to Philadelphia and Felix Pie to Baltimore and bring back pitchers Garrett Olson, J.A. Happ (the Northwestern product) and Sean Marshall for the Padres.

The key for that deal to work is for the Phillies or Orioles to take Jason Marquis, with the Cubs agreeing to eat some of his salary.

Would this be a good deal for the Cubs?

Getting Peavy unquestionably makes it a good deal, even though DeRosa could be missed. His departure would make the left-handed-hitting Mike Fontenot the second baseman, partially fulfilling Lou Piniella’s wish to become more balanced. The addition of a left-handed-hitting right fielder –- some reports now say Milton Bradley is at the top of their list –- would make Piniella very happy.

Peavy has turned in sub-3 earned run averages in four of the last five seasons, including a 2.85 mark last year. He’s been helped by Petco Park, sure, but overall he’s allowed only 315 hits in 397 innings the last two years. That figure doesn’t have much to do with Petco’s large dimensions.

DeRosa, Pie, Marquis, and Marshall? Done, done, and done (and I wound't mind Dunn either).

I believe it the moment I see Peavy in a Cubs hat at the press conference. Too many "done deals" have turned out to not be so done after all.

Agreed, but it is interesting when something like this actually makes it onto an MLB.com page of all sights...

Who exactly are you trading to Baltimore to get Roberts? After the Peavy deal, there will be little left to trade. After last year's debacle, I don't see Hendry wasting any time talking to MacPhail about Roberts. If the Cubs still have money left over after trading for Peavy and signing Bradley, Furcal would make more sense than Roberts since he can be signed as a free agent. I doubt they have the money to do all 3, however.

well im not sure peavy's better than harden when harden decides to not prior

That's pretty much my take on it. When Harden is healthy, I feel like he's the best pitcher in baseball. He seems completely unhittable.

I'd almost say (and especially should his market drop) Mark Grudzielanek. .982 OPS against lefties last year and .816 for 06-08.

If he's serious that, at this point in his career, the most important thing is a ring and the playoffs then you might think he'd be up for a part time role. But having just declined $4.5 from the Royals he'd probably be out of our price range.

Drawing blanks on other alternatives. Mark Loretta for a million might have been an option, but it looks like he'll be a Dodger.

Money would be the main problem. Roberts is in a walk year and Baltimore did say they wanted to sign him long term otherwise they would shop him at the meetings.

Marquis

Derosa

Pie

Cedeno

Marshall

Vitters

Those six might bring back enough talent in a four team deal that could net the Cubs both Peavy/Roberts.

Towers is basically serving this on a platter to Jim to get this done. The ball is in Hendrys court and all he has to do is sign. Im pretty confident he'll get it done, but if he doesn't I cant imagine what a friggin letdown and disappointment that would be since Towers has been so open about this as is basically saying " here take him, its up to you now".

"Take another Cy Young pitcher. Please take him!"

"Well, I dunno. *furls up chin*.......not so sure, let me think about it for awhile."

Very interesting idea on Grudz. I wouldn't be against that for a cheap 1 year deal.

DeRosa, Pie, Marquis, and Marshall? Done, done, and done (and I wound't mind Dunn either).

Where do I sign?

Seems like an awful lot to give up from our major league team. This team is built to win now, and losing DeRosa and Marshall really hurts our flexibility when Soriano, Harden, Zambrano and Peavy go down at some point.

We still have Samardzija and Gaudin (hopefully). Marshall isn't that huge of a loss, though I'd love to keep him.

On hold over much of the last month, the Brian Roberts talks are on again between the Cubs and Baltimore Orioles. This deal is almost certainly going to happen -- the only question is when and how much it is going to cost the Cubs.

The feeling among major league executives is soon, and a lot. Don't be surprised if the trade is finalized later this week -- perhaps even Wednesday -- and the deal includes pitchers Sean Marshall, Sean Gallagher and Ronny Cedeno.

Eventually it will get done. It's 60 some days before pitchers and catchers report so the Cubs have time.

I'd rather not have this thread go on for 400 pages.

What did the Brian Roberts thread end up at?

309 pages.

RIP Brian Roberts thread <3

And then who replaces one of them in the bullpen? And do you really see Samardzija as being Marshall's equal? Furthermore, what happens if we sign Bradley, and can't play DeRosa in right for the 60-70 games Bradley will miss? This trade looks good on paper, but we're really losing a lot of flexibility

The key difference here is that Baltimore's owner was doing everything possible to keep Roberts from being traded, while San Diego's owner is putting payroll restrictions on Towers that force him to be traded. And the Cubs are the only trade possibility.

I'll admit that it will sting a bit to lose DeRosa. But, if Bradley is missing time, you put Fukudome or Hoffpauir out there and play Johnson in center. I would imagine the Cubs could find someone else on the cheap to fill in when necessary. As temporary call ups, the Cubs could bring up Jake Fox, Sam Fuld or maybe Josh Kroeger will still be around. Hopefully, Colvin can become an option sooner rather than later.

Lou hates Fox for some reason, Kroeger will probably sign a minor league deal somewhere where he has a shot at making the big league club, and the Sam Fuld train has long since boarded, left the station, derailed, and burst into flames.

The ultimate LOL moment will be when we sign Corey Patterson to a minor league deal.

I've said it a couple places now, but Clint Barmes is my guy for that spot. Good defender that has always hit LHP, in an overcrowded infield situation in Colorado with Atkins, Baker, Stewart, and Tulowitzki all competing for 3 spots.

I'd be stunned if Vitters isn't included - he could easily not be mentioned in that blog and still be part of the deal since he's a minor leaguer.

Vitters, DeRosa, Marshall, Pie and Cedeno or a reliever is alot. I hope Hendry either keeps Vitters or Marshall out of this trade somehow. Since DeRosa now seems to be in the deal.

The Inquirer reported that the Orioles might be involved in the multiclub deal. "Three teams, possible," the paper quoted a Phillies source as having said Monday night. "Four, doubtful."

So if it's just the Cubs/Pads/Phils, then no Pie then? But then again SD would probably just want Pie. Eh...it's all too confusing.
