If the Bulls are that bad, the team needs to be blown up.

But there is reason to hold for some optimism if you look at the comments following their player projections:

Last week at the APBRmetrics forum for statistical analysis, a poll asked which team was the most challenging in terms of predictions. My vote went to the Bulls, because there is no way to really account for what went so disastrously wrong last season. Was it a distraction to have Luol Deng and Ben Gordon turn down contract extensions? Did the team tune out Jim Boylan after Scott Skiles' departure? How much was the tension between the younger players and the team's veterans a factor? I don't know, and for the most part those aren't questions that can be answered by computers.

Derrick Rose is also something of a wild card. Certainly, his numbers don't look like those of a No. 1 pick or a can't-miss star. Point guards definitely tend to struggle as rookies (Chris Paul being the exception that proves the rule), though Rose will be helped by the NBA's hand-checking restrictions. Overall, it's unlikely the Bulls will be very good on offense. However, they were 20th in Offensive Rating two years ago and still won 49 games (with a better point differential) thanks to a lights-out defense. Can Vinny Del Negro return that style to a Bulls team that, with the exception of a shot-blocking anchor at center, has all the pieces defensively? Good question.

It does kind of feel like we're heading for that type of season. I hope my "feelings" are wrong.

I figured it was hard to trade Hinrich away this past offseason with his contract. I'm not a big fan of Gordon, don't commit to him too, especially when you have other options around.

Man, Pac-10 bias or not, I really wanted Brandon Roy instead of Tyrus Thomas. Imagine Rose and Roy.

Ehh, the past is the past. Pretty much everyone wanted someone besides TT in 2006.

That is so not true. I recall a lot of people wanting TT around here.

Really? Huh, I thought Aldridge was the choice of most people (obviously you) and Roy was #2 on most people's wish list.

I merged the offseason and the regular season Bulls thread. Probably should have locked the offseason thread when the regular season thread was made, but who knew Tranny would go hunting for the wrong thread?

IMO a lot would have to go wrong for the Bulls to be THAT bad. I don't expect a great season by any means, but I find it very hard to believe they can be worse than last year having not lost a whole heck of a lot from 07-08, if only because there's no way Deng, Nocioni and Noah/Thomas are going to be as underwhelming (and injury-prone in Lu's case) as they were last season.

I wanted Roy. A big guard would have done the Bulls wonders when they were good a couple years ago.

Two things.

Derrick Rose is even more of the truth than the last time I posted it.

Larry Hughes needs to stop shooting even more than the last time I posted it.

Why did we pay Deng 70 million again? What value does he bring?

The ability to play good one half and then become completely invisible in the second half. You don't think that's worth $70 million?

I knew this guy wasn't even close to being worth this money. I know it IS only the preseason, but nothing in his game has changed at all from last year. If we're giving $70 million contracts based on potential, we'd be over the salary cap with all the guys we have on our team that are "potential" players.

D-Rose is a stud though.
