Still chasing Roberts

The Cubs will continue their pursuit of a speedy leadoff hitter, keeping the Baltimore Orioles' Brian Roberts at the top of their wish list. They also are expected to be players in the free-agent derby for ace left-hander CC Sabathia.

Whatever they do, the team they bring to spring training will look nothing like the group that sat stunned in that visitors clubhouse Saturday night.

Great, it'll look nothing like the players that had the best record in the NL. Bring on the Darin Erstads.

This is probably the writer speculating but still.

Can't everyone see the Cubs landing Sabathia, and then his arm going out from overuse with the Brewers and him pitching 20 games for us over 4 years?

Don't be ridiculous.

No way he's signing for only 4 years.

You never know with Hendry. It all depends on how much money he has to work with. As I recall, in the pre 2007 off season, we werent even in the Soriano hunt, it was down to the Phillies and Angels, and then not only did hendrt swoop in and grab him, but he got Aramis back, who the Angels and Phillies were also both after as soon as he opted out of his old deal. Hendry can work come magic.

CC was my thought as to what they'd wind up with since they'd feel the need to do something. All this talk about a left handed power bat though, who knows.

conveniently, he's also a lh power bat

It's having the resources. Nothing magic about it.

Ding Ding! We have a winner. I don't believe Roberts is still at the top of Hendry's wishlist for a variety of reasons. The most obvious reason is that AM toyed with him for months back when Roberts was a year younger and had 2 years left on his contract. I can't see AM accepting a lesser offer this year from Hendry. As for Sabathia, I can't see Hendry giving $20+ million per year for 8+ seasons to a pitcher or outbidding the Yankees, Red Sox, Giants, etc.

I just still think he could be amazing. He'd be an amazing lead off hitter for us and he could play all three OF positions

At this point, I hope the Cubs get a leadoff hitter just so they'll shut up about it and Soriano will be elsewhere in the lineup. Furcal and Teixeira are the guys I would love. Milton Bradley and Bobby Abreu would be interesting for 1-2 year deals. Either of those guys or Teixeira could play RF, w/ Fukudome, Reed, Pie in CF and for defensive replacements. Vlad and Crawford aren't going anywhere. Not sure that I'd be all that interested in Crawford.

Furcal and Teixeira probably aren't realistic though, as the Cubs love Theriot and aren't creative enough to put Tex in RF. Of the realistic options, I'd love to go after DeJesus and Greinke from KC. Then Abreu should be somewhat cheap in RF. If the Cubs want a LH in the middle of the order, for the sake of having a LH in the middle of the order, Abreu's a decent bet. Kosuke can get plenty of PT between injuries (Soriano) and days off.
