Most of the people on NSBB know of my irrational hatred for ND. It's a deep hate, it's a good hate. It gives me no pleasure to say that Holtz is probably closer to the truth. They play the Big 10 teams but each of those teams are not good. Their toughest game outside of USC is Pitt and Pitt is coached by Wannstedt. I could see them winning 9, 10, or 11 games with a little luck. Then they'll play in a big bowl and get exposed like they always do.

Excites the few ND delusional fans who actually believe him (less than 15% I'd say) and continually inflames the ND hate from everybody else. The 85% of the remainder of ND fans are caught in the middle left wondering how he slipped down the hill so quickly.

He's the worst analyst at ESPN, but he does seem to get a lot of people awfully fired up over his comments (not saying that you're doing that), so that's probably why he has a job. It's sad too-ESPN execs probably knowingly continue to sell him the lie that he's there because he provides quality analysis even though everybody knows that he just continues to embarrass himself.

That's pretty much what all ESPN "analysts" are there for these days.(sans St. Kirk of course) Just say something to get the masses fired up. It's the sole purpose of Around the Horn.

I like to think of him more of the Abe Simpson of ESPN college football coverage.

I was listening to the local sports talk show with Herbstreit, and boy his he pissed about the fact that this player from tO$U had a DUI but isn't getting suspended. It's nice to hear a local show that doesn't just blow sunshine up the local team's collective rear ends

it's really nice having him on the radio every day, even though it's just noon-2. He's usually on with Chris Spielman

His radio show is of national quality. He's got an encyclopedic knowledge of college sports.

I don't know if they still have this line-up or not but they use to have Chris Speilman on right before Herbstreet's show. Speilman was horrific but the mouth breathers in Columbus love him.

he's actually on WITH Spielman now. I swear it was Herb I was listening to today, the the website says it was Scott Torgersen and Mike Ricordati. Herbstreit/Spielman/Hooley is on 4-6

The beautiful thing is NO Jim Rome. We get Mike & Mike, The Herd, Scott/Mike, Mike Tirico, then Herb and the gang.

I think I speak for most ND fans that I would gladly take the bowl-game disembowelment if it meant being good enough to make a BCS game this year. This is hopefully the last time I say that.

FWIW, my BCS predictions:

Rose: OSU/Arizona State

Fiesta: Georgia/South Florida

Sugar: LSU/Missouri

Orange: Clemson/BYU

National Championship: Oklahoma/USC

It has nothing to do with "being good enough". They aren't good enough to make BCS game, they are Notre Dame enough.

I'm not playing this me-versus-the-board game anymore on the BCS eligiblity rules. Good enough to be eligible. Whatever.

As an 'SC alum I'll gladly take the Oklahoma/USC rematch in the Orange Bowl =P

I've backed you on this. But yeah, ND ain't goin BCS. 8-4 should do it, and in spite of the haters will be a pretty successful season after last year's nightmare.

I've got 8-4 too. Sun Bowl against Oregon or Cal or (hopefully not) Oregon State.

Anyway, two hours until Ball State kickoff. Jason Whitlock wrote a full article on FOXSports.com today predicting a BCS bid for the Cardinals (which I doubt they'd get even if they went undefeated). I wish I could be there.

OU's defense is going to drop two games this year, just watch.

I hope one of those is against Mizzou in the Big 12 Championship.

Although OU is on my list of teams that my favorite team will never beat in a big game. Along with Cubs vs Marlins and Cubs vs DBacks

I'm not a fan of his, but I'd take Jim Rome any day of the week over Cowherd. Rome's show is generally awful, but he's a very good interviewer. Cowherd has no good traits that I've found.

Luckily, the local sports station here is taking Rome off the air next Friday and replacing him with a couple of good local guys. So I have no Rome or Cowherd on my 24-hour sports station. :D

That's largely my stance. When Rome was on the air here, I didn't listen for his takes or the dumbass smack (though admittedly, there were a few diamonds in the rough). I listened because it was national sports talk and because Jim usually has pretty interesting interviews on. (also because I hate music radio.)

Rome generally asks good questions of his guests and gets good information from them. Obviously, given his style, he'll have a a few seconds of silliness with them, but overall he's a good interviewer.

It's the primary reason I ever listen to him.

Iowa State kicks off in a little under 2 hours, so I get to experience the start of college football season two days before most of the country. Being an Iowa State fan that's probably the only thing I'll have to brag about this year. I'm predicting 4 wins this year, and that's probably a tad optimistic. Austen Arnaud is the starting QB, but might split time Phillip Bates, who was more well know for his receiving last year. Since the 2 QB system has worked approximately never in college football history, and that ISU doesn't really have any players of note this year, a bowl game is somewhat unlikely. They should win tonight against the mighty South Dakota State Jackrabbits, though ISU isn't a huge favorite and lost to I-AA competition last year.
