Sounds like a great deal for us, but Im having trouble understanding how a dead in the water team like the Giants would want Ward whose a FA next year, unless we're throwing in a decent prospect, and they think they can turn around and send Ward to a contender for another prospect.

they'd do it to get out of randy winn's contract for next year. it's not about acquiring anything good, it's about shedding payroll.

anyways, if i'm the cubs i'd just dfa ward and call up hoffpauir. that solves our problem.

That seems to make sense since they both play the same postions and Hoff is in a good groove right now. Winn can play CF/LF/RF as well, correct? That's the only advantage I can see in getting him over making your move.

The PTBNL is huge in evaluating whether this deal is worth it or not. If it's a nobody, then why not. As far as being concerned about his contract for next year, who cares. Maybe we have to eat $2 mil, but we could use him off of the bench through the series then move him in the offseason for a decent prospect. If that's the case, then essentially we could end up giving up a nothing prospect and a couple of million and get someone pretty decent. If the PTBNL is Ascanio or someone better, then I'd rather just DFA Ward and bring Hoffpouir back up.

If they did trade for him, I doubt they'd be looking to move him in the offseason. He would probably be slated to compete for CF time with Pie and Johnson, and may continue to spell Fukudome and/or Soriano.

Johnson and Edmunds are both FA this year. If the Cubs had Winn and Johnson for next year, it gives the team a lot of versatility and depth. Assuming an OF of Soriano/ Pie/Fukudome, Johnson and Winn (and DeRosa) could get a lot of playing time platooning (Pie), with injuries (Soriano), slumps (Pie and Fukudome), and pinchhitting.

I don't think they'd move him either. I'm just saying that if the $8 mil he's owed next year (or whatever it is) shouldn't be considered a sunk cost once they made the move and shouldn't be the sole prohibiting factor from obtaining him.

This deal looks more like a salary dump for the Giants. They would get out of paying Winn 8.25 million for next season. For the Cubs, Winn is a huge upgrade over Ward for the stretch run and the postseason as he's a better hitter and isn't a liability in the field.

Side note...wasn't Lou Piniella traded for Winn?

Thats the only incentive we need.

Still, its odd that theres not a single source outside this board. Are you sure its not just something that Stoney or soemone on the radio casually suggested?

Johnson won't be a free agent this offseason, not until after '09.

Trading for Winn's contract would be all kinds of dumb.

So you're saying this won't be a Winn Winn situation?

They signed Johnson to a 2 year deal? I thought he was a waiver pick up.

He's still arb eligible next season.

Reports coming out of San Fransisco are that the Cubs are on the verge of acquiring OF Randy Winn from the Giants for OF/1B Daryle Ward and a minor league player to be named later.

Winn would be a significant upgrade over Ward:

Winn: .294 AVG, 5 HR, 46 RBI

Ward: .221 AVG, 2 HR, 9 RBI

Obviously it's not really fair to compare these numbers, but I did anyways.

My feeling is that this won't happen, even though I could see Hendry making a move like this with Fukudome struggling.

First: Let's face it, Ward is a liability. When he pinch-hits two things happen: 1: He either gets out or 2: He either walks or hits And if he does the 2nd thing, Lou has to burn another player (I know he uses Jason Marquis) to pinch-run for Ward. So when the playoffs come around, you need players who can run the bases and possibly stay in the game. Ward can't do either. Burning players in the regular season you can get away with, but you can't in the playoffs.

Second: I know this....when Hendry was looking at Rich Harden, he had scouts looking at the Giants in June. So the interest in Winn is definately there. And Hendry does make moves that seems to come out of the blue air (HS Choi for Lee, signing Soriano). So, even tho there is no source right now, it doesn't surprise me that Hendry is interested in Winn.

Yes he was. Piniella wanted to become Tampa Bay's manager while he was still under contract with Seattle, so Tampa Bay sent Winn to Seattle as compensation for letting Lou out of his contract.

Not a terrible trade depending how much money the Giants pick up and who the PTBNL is. Though, I would actaully like to see Hoffpauir take Ward's spot on the roster.

Wouldn't Randy Winn be taking Ward's roster spot if the trade went down?

Yeah, that was the point I was making. I'd like to see Hoff get a chance before we make a trade. I guess I should have made that clearer.
