The fact that he was only striking out 4 per 9 IP in the minors up until a couple of months ago is absolutely stunning to me

Me too. I saw him make a start in double A and his stuff did not not look nearly as electric as it has in these games. His control was also a bit spotty. The Mississippi gun is a bit on the slow side, but it clocked him at 88-91 on the fastball.

God do I hope this was the real Jeff Samardzija and not just fluky Todd Wellemeyer-type work. He's looked awesome so far.

How long till "badnews" stops by and tells us that his ball doesn't move? it is just an optical illusion created by TBS/WGN/CSN.

All kidding aside, he looks decent. We'll see how he holds up though. Nothing to get too excited about yet.

I think it may be if he stays in the pen pitching an inning or two at a time. I think if he moves to the rotation, he won't have quite the life on the fast ball. At least, that's what I saw when I saw him start.

I think that what we had heard HAS to be correct with Shark. The reason for low K totals was because he was working on different pitches.

The way Lou was talking in the postgame, I'm starting to get real concerned that Samardzija wont be given the chance to crack the rotation next year.

Nice fastball movement with some decent "rise"

That's for all pitches, but 19 of the 25 pitches he threw were fastballs.

All fastballs registered between 93.5 and 96.0. Most between 94 and 96.

EDIT: Here's a better chart

Is the Shark maybe more suited for a bullpen role? Maybe he's more valuable as a guy who can go all out for 1-2 innings vs. pacing himself for 6+ innings? His fastball looked insane today.

That's my take, but Raisin disagrees with me.

Hop on the Shark's back out of the pen for the rest of this season and then give him a shot at the rotation next year.

I agree in the short-term, but I want him starting if he continues progressing at this rate

It sounds like, from what Lou said, Samardjiza may be taking Howry's old spot in the pen.

What was he saying?

I just worry that his fastball lacks the life when he's a starter.

4IP makes you a stud, eh?

I wouldnt classify him as "stud" yet, but if you see his stuff, he has a possibility to be really good. He has some nasty stuff.

Carlos Marmol's pitches still looked good as a starter though. From what I've heard, Shark's pitches seemed less than impressive in the minors, though admittedly I've never seen him pitch before a couple days ago.

me either. it's too early to say if he's like Farnsworth or not

I'd be worried about lack of secondary stuff as a starter than his drop in velo of his FB. The one FB he threw at 92 in his 1st outing had great movement on it, more movement than any of his other FBs so far. I don't really like his slider and his splitter has a bit to go before it becomes successful enough as an out pitch to where you can see him being effective 3 times thru an order.

With an arm like his (and as much as we're paying him), we'd have to be stupid to send him to the pen without even giving him a shot at sticking in the rotation.
