The apology brigade is out in force, I see.

Samardzija got a very borderline call on a 3-2 pitch for his first out, then gave up a solid gb single, then couldn't execute a pitchout, then gave up a deep line drive that was fortunately in the deepest part of the park, then gave up a solid double, then induced a popup.

ERA of 9, WHIP of 2.00, hitters hit 400/400/600 off of him.

There's no way you can slice this into a good outing. It was a bad outing.

Samardzija was brought up partially because the pen is taxed. He didn't bring him in with inherited runners, and he didn't do it in the 9th or something. It was a fine time to use him, and I'd consider having him go another inning.

I agree on every point.

Agreed as well. I don't think the Marlins have much of a scouting report on him either so his 98 MPH fastball would presumably throw them off guard.

I don't think stats mean much when it comes to one inning.

He gave up 2 hits to two very good hitters, and he got a K. Using rate stats to evaluate his outing makes you look ridiculous.

The double was on a pitch around the letters. Sure, Cantu hit it hard, but that doesn't make it a bad pitch.

The "runs allowed in the inning" stat, unfortunately, does.

Or, it was his 1st ML outing and he didn't look too bad.

Either way, his career path isn't going to be determined by today's outing. I think we all remember Wellemeyer's ML debut.

Talk about small samples.

Ok, Samardzija's stuff was filthy. He was clearly nervous and next time out that should be alleviated a little bit since he has gone through it once. That moving heater in the high 90's is just about impossible to hit and the only one that much was done with was a bit of a flukey hit off the end of the bat. The double was a bit of a mistake pitch, but all in all, I personally thought that Samardzija looked pretty good. If that little seeing eye single doesn't go through the middle, then everyone would be praising him. Even if he had totally stunk up the joint, we can't say that one earned run in his first major league appearance is the end of the world anyway. Anyway, my opinion, he looked better than expected and let's get some runs.
