I'm sure a lot of you saw Gallagher exchanging hugs with his now former teammates. EPatt had a similar goodbye down at AAA:

Patterson took batting practice at 4:30 p.m., then was told by manager Pat Listach that he was involved in the trade.

"It's tough to leave guys you've been around your whole career," Patterson said as he accepted handshakes and hugs from his teammates. "I'm pretty much in shock, but this is part of the business."

"They’re the cream of our crop here. These guys have all contributed in the big leagues. Gallagher is going to be a heck of a pitcher in the long run. Patterson is going to be a heck of a player. Donaldson, we drafted him in the [first round] last year and he’s got a bright future ahead of him. And Murton, you’ve got a career .300 hitter, so there you have it. Hopefully, we’re picking up a 15-20 game winner, and a solid bullpen guy who can get righties out." - Iowa Cubs manager Pat Listach

Yes, pity the A's fan who's seen so many aces disappear up so many other teams' sleeves. But A's fans should embrace Tuesday's trade. Don't cry the same ol' tired tune of how the A's ship out too many stars, not when so many of those loyalty-testing trades actually work out in the A's favor.

Harden was house money. His right arm, so worrisome over the years, had transformed back into a wanted commodity, thanks to a 5-1 first-half record. Despite back-to-back sub-par outings, he was the A's best trade bait.

The Cubs wanted him, and they can have him. They need him more than the A's do. And they'll need to get skipper Lou Piniella a reliable pitch-count clicker to track Harden.

If either Harden or Gaudin pan out, that should boost the Cubs' bid for their first World Series title in 100 years (a bid that'll fall short, so help the Billy Goat Curse).

We got ourselves a Cubs hater.

What do we know about Gaudin?

That his name is pronounced Go Dan.

Not to steal Vance's thunder, but I think it's pronounced Geaux Dan.

I am not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but from looking at the schedule, if the Cubs can go Z, Dempster, Harden, Lilly as the first 4 after the break in any order, they would line up to be the 4 guys to pitch in the 4 game set in Milwaukee at the end of the month!

My favorite excerpt from the Rotoworld article:

* Dempster is now the Cubs' third starter, but that didn't stop him from turning in yet another great performance Tuesday, as he held the Reds to one run on two hits in seven innings. If you ignore his rough start versus the White Sox on June 27, Dempster is now 10-2 with a 2.57 ERA on the year. Together, Zambrano, Harden, and Dempster are 24-7 with a 2.87 ERA and 263 strikeouts in 307 innings spread over 49 starts, which along with the NL's best offense is pretty damn scary.

BP's analysis is up ... does anyone subscribe?

She hates it from Oakland's perspective. Doesn't think highly of anyone the Cubs gave up. Likes it from the Cubs perspective.

Analyzing this deal, Beane really baffles me on this deal. For Harden and Gaudin, I would have imagined he'd want something along the lines of Gallagher, Colvin and/or Donaldson, Veal and Ascanio. I'm confused by the value of Murton and Patterson, especially with the depth of their outfield (Cust, Buck, Brown, Gonzalez, Sweeney, Davis, DeNorfia, etc...)

At least with guys like Colvin, Donaldson and Veal, they could develop these guys while their option clocks haven't kicked in. Also, I'd be interested in a guy like Ascanio for the pen, especially if I'm a small market team needing cheap bullpen help.

I think part of the motivation was he wanted to trade Harden now, and not give setbacks a chance to scuttle getting anything.

From what I heard on the radio today, Hendry did have access to Harden's medical records, but he was not looked at by Cubs' doctors beforehand. He said he trusted the A's medical staff. With Harden's velocity coming down lately (which happens in the course of a season) and Beane's desire to trade Harden rather quickly and with his team still in the race, this is reason for a little concern. But Harden still has to pass his physical in Chicago for the trade to be formalized right?

From what I understand, the deal hinged around Gally, not Murton and/or EPatt. I wouldn't discount Gallagher like some others seem to. He's very young yet, doesn't have an injury history, and has shown some signs of being a solid rotation guy.

Beane's not going to be able to rape our entire minor league system for a pitcher who has done 9 DL stints in the past 6 years. He knows that. Whether or not he's an ace when he's healthy is mitigated by the injury history.

the oakland a's doctor apparently taught or trained dr. yokum, the Cubs orthopod, which hendry said facilitated the review of medical records.

Where/when has Harden's velocity decreased?
