Well consider me firmly a Jim Hendry fan now. To get Harden (and Gaudin) without giving up Pie or Hill is quite amazing.

This is so awesome. We finally have pitching depth, good pitching depth. Should be a fun final few months to this season.

A rotation of Z, Harden, Lilly, Dempster, Hill is actually looking decently possible. That would make be pop so many b's.

I don't know if this was mentioned.

Gallagher, 22, is expected to start for Oakland on Friday against the Angels. Patterson, 25, and Murton, 26, will report to Triple-A Sacramento. Donaldson, 22, will be assigned to Class A Stockton or Double-A Midland.

I'm a bit surprised they're not bringing Murton to the mlb club.

Donaldson is getting promoted. I find that surprising.

Seems like Beane really thinks highly of him.

I don't blame him.

Still surprising to see him get promoted given the season, especially possibly two levels to the Texas League.

Has it been determined when Harden is going to pitch? I'm hoping Friday because I'm going to the game.

He also talked about how this is a risky move for the Cubs.

it's really not.

We give up one clearly major league level player for 2

even at a basic level its very low risk. I would have done the trade without Gaudin, but with him thrown in its like we don't even lose Gallagher's production at all

Yeah, since this is a win now trade and Gallagher was on his way to the pen, this can't really make things worse.

Yeah, I don't know how he can say that. Even if Harden were to get injured, the Cubs aren't any worse off than before. The only contributing player they lose (for this year) is Gallagher, and Gaudin serves as some insurance for that.

There isn't as much risk involved as a lot of people think.

Great, now he'll be the next Joe Mauer and we'll just have a stupid world series championship to show for it.

Im just praying that Beane hasn't sent us damaged good

Haven't read thru the whole thread yet but I keep seeing this statement and had to comment before I see it again.

Hendry knows his past history of DL trips and that Harden mentioned the dead arm after his last two starts. Plus I'm sure a physical is involved before the trade becomes official. I find it hard to believe that in this day and age, a GM could sneak an injured player through a trade or would be able to hold back information. Unless Beane is prescient, he has no knowledge of what the future holds for Harden in the way of injuries.

I'm a bit surprised they're not bringing Murton to the mlb club.

Like I said earlier, the A's have about 85 OFs. I assume Beane will send feelers out on Emil Brown, DFA him if he can't get a deal done in the next couple days and then bring Murton up. After Emil Brown they have Gonzalez, Cust, Sweeney, Davis, not to mention Denorfia and Buck who will probably be back up soon.

I'm pretty sure this is their depth chart:

Gonzalez and Davis platoon in CF

Sweeney in RF

Cust and Brown in LF

Assuming Buck and Denorfia return soon and Thomas is done, the smartest thing would be to get rid of Brown and Davis. Platoon Cust and Bankston at DH. Start Buck, Gonzalez, and Sweeney agasint righties in the OF and mix Murton and Denorfia in against lefties. With Buck and Gonzalez being able to play CF, Murton will probably end up a full time starter over Sweeney after he cools off. But if Thomas does come back, Murton isn't one of the 3 best OFs on the A's. Of course, he should actually get a chance when one of the starters goes down, unlike here.

I hope for Friday as well, Saturday's game is a blackout except for Chicago area.

Really seemed like Lou was leaning toward Saturday from the post game press conference.

Sooooo many of those players barely qualify as major league players, they really need some people that can up non-negative VORP

Buck, Gonzalez, and Cust are all better (or Gonzalez soon will be better) than Matt Murton. Like I said, I think Brown and Davis will be DFA'ed if they can't be traded. Sweeney's value is that he can play CF, so the A's really don't need him, Murton's bat is better. They had plenty of OFs before today.

They just mentioned a PTBNL on Baseball Tonight...are they just being typically [expletive]?

They were talking about the Sabathia trade.

OK, good. Little moment of panic there.

I almost freaked out about that as well, but I realized they were talking about the Sabathia trade and that guy that they are converting from 3B to 2B. If there was a PTBNL in the Harden trade it probably would have been Vitters which would make this trade very very different.

Yeah, I was ready to start getting worried, but then realized Showalter was talking about the CC trade..

This is how my friend originally reported the trade to me as I drove home from work. He told me Gallagher, Murton, Patterson, and a PTBNL who I was convinced was Vitters.
